AYLI: What's the inspiration behind the mix? Would you mind sharing the tracklist for your mix?

The ecological crisis that we have grown up fearing is here. From monsoon-like conditions along the Hurricane hub of the east coast that is slowly sinking Miami and NYC, to the fires and smog that blanket California and the West coast; capitalism’s chickens are coming home to roost for all of humanity. Michigan had record levels of rainfall this past year that caused extensive property loss, infrastructure damage and even put some of the major highways under water. My studio had some minor flooding. Luckily not too much was ruined, but over 100 records did get water damage. It took about two weeks for me to give them an initial clean and dry.

So I decided to make a mix using records that were affected by the flood. They have yet to receive a deep rinse, so they have a bit more surface noise than usual. In a world that pushes digital ownership and metaverse living ,this is a statement against the artificial clean and sheen world that is projected by the trajectory of our society. I hope that more people try to engage in analog life while they still can.
As George Clinton said, “Think! It aint illegal...yet.”

Campout Mix Series: Turtle Bugg

Love Injection is a New York music and culture monthly fanzine in print since February 2015, founded by DJs, archivists, and audio enthusiasts Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch. Their namesake record label launched in 2020. Avid record and audio enthusiasts, Paul is also an art director and Barbie writes and performs music with various projects.

Turtle Bugg (aka Treezy B) is a dj of African Diasporic descent that plays vinyl records in the style he refers to as “this thang formerly known as house”. TB was born in New Jersey, cut his teeth in NYC, and now resides in Detroit. Music is central to the African American experience and this was no different for young Bugg. Catching Parliament-Funkadelic as his first concert, listening to the tail end of great NYC radio or absorbing the vibe at his grandfather's jazz club in Harlem all added to his unique ear for selection. While knee-deep in the NYC scene at night, Turtle spent his days tending to the record stacks at the infamous secondhand shop the Thing. Unearthing gems that others had passed on taught him the art of digging. While other DJs are stuck in the endless cycle of cool, Bugg is impervious to trends. In addition to his own artistic endeavors, Treezy is part of the Freakish Pleasures collective and runs the record label Basement Floor with his Soul 2 Seoul partner Chung.

This is Treezy B's African Art of Acid (Triple A baybee) Mixx, an homage to the art form that is known as acid house. As we all know House was birthed from Chicago, coming from the same gestation of 80s post disco black music that gave us Techno & Hip Hop. This period of musical innovation, propelled primarily by black youth, was yet another part in the long history of African-Americans dictating popular culture. Acid house was another rhythmic mistake, like the original blue note; an innovative use of technology beyond it's original intent by putting sum stank on it. 

It was black people who used a discarded bass machine to produce futuristic & psychedelic sounds that would influence the world yet again. Yet acid house, like most forms of popular music, did not do for the black community what it's done for others. Acid muzik has been lazily copied and mass produced, with little of the soul intact. There was no Second Summer of Love in Amerikkka, no Ibiza for Negroes to spend their holiday, no beginnings of a multi-million dollar industry that could change the lives of Lady Liberty's bastard children. The Summer of 1988 for those of African blood was another year of ravaging due to Reaganomics, Thatcherism, crack cocaine, gang violence, and institutional racism on a global scale.

Still melanin keeps on providing because funk is it's own reward. And if it ain't funky then what the funk are you doin?

All songs are acid music produced by people of African Diasporac descent. All vinyl records on 1 Technics SL-1200M3D, 1 Technics SL-1200MK5 & an Ecler NUO 2.0 mixer.
