Shawn O’Sullivan is one of the more opinionated people in electronic music. On top of that, he has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of little known or recognized strains of music. During our conversation, he referenced his angst filled teenage years and the various types of music that accompanied it; that explains why his music tends to veer toward brooding, borderline thunderous, techno. From gabber to industrial, his taste for sonically destructive forms of music balances his cool composure. Under a variety of alias including Vapauteen, Civil Duty (in conjunction with Beau Wanzer), Further Reductions (with Katie Rose), and his band Led Er Est, he keeps himself more than busy. What’s next for him isn’t entirely clear, but he’s in no way slowing down, musically. His most recent work comes via Anthony Parasole’s fledging imprint, The Corner and New York Staple L.I.E.S. (under Vapauteen.) With numerous collaborations and a few records on the hush hush, we can expect to see his name (or variations of it) crop up more frequently. Below, is an excerpt from our chat. He’s also dusted off a few records and contributed the 79th installment in our Truancy Volume series.

My Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, originally aired Aug 2018. Here it is without the radio drops.

I’m usually not much of a preplanned mix person, I massively prefer playing to a crowd and interacting with the atmosphere. Combine that with the extremely not insignificant fact that this is one of the most important and longest running mix series around, this was quite a challenge!

I spent a long time gathering these 40 songs and playing with the arrangement (even made a couple new edits). I included songs that have been staples in my sets, plus old favorites from before I was a DJ. Eternal shouts to Nathan Micay, Aurora Halal, Overmono, E-Talking and Koehler for letting me include your dope as hell unreleased new music (plus two unreleased songs from myself). 

The last song is by Oakland band Them Are Us Too and this mix is dedicated to those who lost their lives in a diy music space a year and a half ago. Your music and love lives on. FUCK technocrat capitalist greed in the bay. One of Ghost Ship’s spiritual predecessors, Ghost Town in Oakland, was one of the first gigs I ever played, back in 2011 right around the time when I was realizing that I loved making music and DJing. 

If someone told me then that I’d eventually make an Essential Mix and be touring around the world, I’d be incredulously curious to see just how that would unfold. It’s been wild. Thank you to everyone who has listened and danced with me since then.

San Francisco based since 2011, Carlos Souffront has been wowing crowds with his profound love of music, adventurous selections and creative and thoughtful approach to DJing since the mid 1990s. Renowned as a DJs DJ Souffront gained his first residency in ‘95 at Zoot’s Coffeehouse in Detroit and has gone on to be closely associated with a number of legendary US parties including Interdimensional Transmissions’ infamous No Way Back events, The Bunker in New York and San Francisco’s Honey Soundsystem. Proclamations visible on The Internet name Souffront as possessing the greatest collection of acid records on the planet whilst The Bunker’s Derek Plaslaiko states that Souffrant is the greatest DJ in the solar system. So, for our latest podcast we’re undoubtedly in very good hands indeed. We managed to share some words with Carlos about his current modus operandi, his style of DJing and how he’s managed to keep it fresh from those first humble beginnings in Detroit city through to today.

We have Carlos Souffront, perhaps the true lord of acid returning from the depraved depths of the San Francisco underground to unleash his unique moody vision, killing it in his closing set for IT's Come Feel The Acid party on March, 3, 2013 (3/03). His first set warming up for Tin Man was also stellar, but that pure late night intensity really shines through on this mix.
