For this edition of the Nightshade series, Phase Fatale has created an aggressive industrial techno mix. This mix displays his various influences which range from EBM, Techno, and Industrial music. 

"Phase Fatale is a techno project of now Berlin-based young DJ and producer Hayden Payne from New York. Hayden has a unique background of playing with numerous cold wave and minimal synth bands including Automelodi and his own band Dream Affair and studying Music Technology at New York University. Phase Fatale is an artistic endeavor that’s born out of his various musical ventures over the past 7 years combined with his penchant for the darker, harder and industrial-leaning techno. Phase Fatale demolishes the border between music and noise to create a new progressive vision of techno – the sound of future war, whether it’s captured on vinyl or an extract of the digital static.

For live sets Phase Fatale uses exclusively hardware to achieve his distinguishable sound while his DJ sets features a unique blend of techno laced with EBM and synth gems. His 2014 debut EP Skyscraper on Italian label Avant! Records moves between noise-ridden soundscapes and minimal industrial techno rhythms, capturing the spirits of both EBM classics and modern contemporaries. His next releases are due out in early 2015 on Berlin-based label [Aufnahme + Wiedergabe] followed by Jealous God. Phase Fatale has played alongside acts such as Clock DVA and Cold Cave around the globe from Los Angeles to Moscow."

More than thirty years after its original release, Malcolm McLaren´s "Duck Rock" album stands out as one of the most innovative - yet underrated - albums of the 1980s. For audiences outside the U.S.A. "Duck Rock" single handedly introduced the holy, global reaching innovations of hip hop - rapping, scratching, breakdancing and graffiti - through the music video of the album´s hit single "Buffalo Gals". 

"Duck Rock", produced by 1980s producer superstar Trevor Horn, was also one the first pop album to introduce sampling technology. Besides all the sonic, visual and technological introductions the most radical concept of "Duck Rock" however lied in the collage aesthetics of the album. Conceived as a NY pirate radio show, hosted by the DJs of the World´s Famous Supreme Team show, the album is a musical world trip on which Malcolm McLaren takes the listener from the Bronx to Soweto, to the Caribbean to West-Africa, to Kentucky and back to New York. At a time when the electro pop and New Wave was ruling the charts, McLaren proposed to look at roots music from around the world for musical innovation, patching together in an amazing, eclectic mix. The accompanying music videos for the hit-singles "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch" showed Malcolm McLaren and crew dressed in the "Buffalo Girls / Nostalgia Of Mud" collection of his then wife Vivienne Westwood, today most known for the over-sized Buffalo hat, worn by Pharell Williams. The hat was inspired by "Peruvian women wearing bowler hats and full skirts, dancing with their babies tied on their back." said Vivienne Westwood in an interview in 1983.

With his sonic essay on "Duck Rock", Berlin based DJ, producer and Man Recordings label-head Daniel Haaksman revisits "Duck Rock" and presents an extended and alternate version of the album, including footage from TV features, interviews with Malcolm McLaren, Trevor Horn and his wife, alternate takes and versions of songs of "Duck Rock" plus unreleased fragments from the World Famous Supreme Team Show that was the founding frame for the "Duck Rock" album.

DJ Nobu has long been Japan's best kept secret, but lately it feels like the cat is well out of the bag as his global touring schedule fills up for 2016. Nobu has been producing the legendary Future Terror parties in Japan since 2001 and launched his Bitta label in 2012. More than anything though, he is known for his completely unpredictable yet always mind-melting DJ sets. We were totally floored by both his prime-time set at The Bunker in Tokyo and his opening set at The Bunker in Osaka in September, 2015. He will be playing the closing set of The Bunker NY takeover of Berghain in February, making his North American debut at The Bunker in Brooklyn in March, in addition to playing alongside The Bunker resident Eric Cloutier at Smart Bar in Chicago. Few DJs demonstrate the depth of vision that seems to come naturally to Nobu.

Her work is featured in the 2013 documentary I Dream of Wires: The Modular Synthesizer Documentary.  Her 2015 solo production debut, The Track of a Storm EP on L.I.E.S. was named to the best-of 2015 lists of Fact Magazine and Juno Plus, and she is currently collaborating with Moog Music in modifying and enclosing their analog circuits into a new instrument using her switchboards, to be performed at the forthcoming Moog Fest in Durham, NC in May 2016. New York based dub king Brendon Moeller was so kind to make this amazing hypnotic podcast for our beloved BALANS series. Brendon has been making waves in the EDM scene for almost 20 years now and is well known for his Beat Pharmacy and Echologist monnikers. And with his imprint Steadfast he delivers the highest quality dancefloor music around nowadays. A new album is due in april on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label, but first he will drop an Echologist remix on Wolfskuil Ltd by the end of march!

As always we had a small Q&A with the South African master:

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

I have done a remix for Wolfskuil artist Roger Gerressen and for ESHU on their recently launched imprint with the same name.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Eat well, exercise, sleep and only smoke good weed and stick with beer!

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

Once upon a Thursday afternoon, a middle-aged man decided to embark on a creative mission. That mission would be to lay down approximately 60 minutes of groovy psychedelic electronic music that would take the listeners on a journey that would enable them to transcend time and space.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

The mix is the first mix I completed incorporating a modified korg monotribe. It was done in my home studio using ableton and a UC-33e controller. Recorded in one take, no rehearsing.

05.Were do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have an album dropping on EDLX in April and will be touring Europe all of April and May. The first single from the album features mixes by Tommy Four Seven and Jonas Kopp.

We have a very special guest for this episode. Man of the moment and one of the artists that sets the course for techno as we speak, Shifted, is on duty for episode 19. Noone knows exactly who is behind this mysterious monnniker, all we know he is no newcomer to the electronic arena. His debutalbum 'Crossed Paths' on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver label, is a stunning collection of tracks: rich in textures and with an almost physical ambiance. No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.

05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

The sixth iDEAL MiXTAPE is by the prince of darkness himself, Trepaneringsritualen. We've worked with Thomas Ekelund for more than a decade now, he is the graphic designer behind most of our releases and we have been releasing a bunch of his Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words records. His MiXTAPE is a harsh, cold, crude synth/industrial trip. Perfect soundtrack to when you cruise the back streets of your city.

Up next is one of our favorite Dutch technojocks: Sandrien! She has been making waves for years in Holland and way beyond with her nononsense take on quality house and techno. Her night IMPRINT in TrouwAmsterdam has raised the bar for our nation capital and she released the fantastic 'Haters' EP on our sisterlabel Wolfskuil Ltd only a couple of weeks ago. 1.What is your relationship with Balans?

I know Darko for a while now and just released my EP on Wolfskuil. I've played at his parties and he played at mine. Really like what he's doing as an artist and with his labels, so happy to have a release on his label. 

2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you  
would like to share with us night folks?

I like to work out, I cycle a lot and go to the gym. Besides that I try to eat healthy. It helps me to stay focussed and feel good.

3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

At the moment I'm reorganizing my record collection and I found some records I wanted to play again. So it turned out a deep techno mix with some of the older tracks and some new stuff.  

4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

I used 2 Technics SL-1210MK2 and an Allen & Heath Mixer.

5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?


The 30th of march I will be doing the next Imprint party at Trouw with Surgeon. Besides that I will be playing at nice parties in Holland and abroad. And at the moment I'm working on new tracks in my new studio.
