Disquiet Junto Project 0171: Oblicardo

3 Tracks grabbed live from the Stoch 4 Lunetta instrument. Drum track was run first against a sparse metronome. Two melodic lines dubbed over; once the loop point had been fixed. Chromaticism was determined by the native trilling of the Stoch. Final mix balanced out in PC software; just light filtering and pan/levels.

The Stoch generously delivered structure without prior deliberation - it was challenging for this purpose to achieve interaction with the triggers to form a plausible tight loop from the percussive bursts. The two instrumental tracks are bound together by switch selected scale distributions. Their triggering was manipulated to hook motifs into the phrasing accents of the base percussion loop.

Axial [disquiet0153-groovelock]

Used my own track - Axial - already randomly generated and waiting to come to terms with. Picked up  Steve Moshier's — No Cause for Alarm (disquiet0153-groovelock) - a solid contrast of speed/density and sat well harmonically. Stacked the loops in PC sequencer, with some re-pitching into bass and scattering into higher registers. Braided a long echoing software synth across to hold it all together and mimic Steve's voicing.

Spoiled for choice with so many great samples ... used a couple more as meat for effects/filters and sprinkled them through. Thanks to:

The Assignment: Create a track from two locked grooves.

This week’s Disquiet Junto project builds on last week’s. Last week, 67 different musicians uploaded as many locked grooves. This week we’ll make new music atop the locked grooves. Here are the steps. Note that there are some options:

Step 1: Choose two locked grooves from the set at http://goo.gl/0s4WmM. You can accomplish this in several ways. You can choose random numbers between 1 and 67 and use those tracks, or you can just select the tracks you most want to work with. Note that most of the tracks should be set to allow, via Creative Commons, for non-commercial re-use. However, if you aren’t sure, please contact the musician to confirm.

Step 2: Make a new track alternating the two locked grooves for between one and two minutes.

Step 3: Use the track that resulted from step 2 as the foundation for a new piece of music. Transform it as you desire, which might include altering the foundational track and adding new material atop it.

Step 4: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Length: Your finished work should be between roughly 1 and 2 minutes long.

 


CoAxial [disquiet0154-grooveunlocked]

After a couple of failed experiments, decided to keep it simple and cadge around sampling of the melodic hints from the originals. Nuts and bolts sequencing, but set up the playback as if being run through 'shutters' at mismatched rates, so the coincidence varies. The Salamander version features as a highly fragmented&delayed background drift.

Tachistoson [disquiet0155 - Mixmatch]

OK, hope it doesn't stretch the rules too far... A year spent jamming tables in a SQL warehouse; did grow some vegetables, but no decent date ordered catalogue of audio projects. Synopsis? = calendar is represented here by 12 months detailed daily weather data from logging station at the end of the road, downloaded, stitched and mangled per DBA's professional manner. Pushed as series into Arduino controller, and spooled back out algorithmically as MIDI for recording. Approx. 5 sec each month.

As a 'journal' it reflects the spirit and experiences of the year, and summarisies the audio techniques I've mucked about with.

Disquiet Junto Project 0156: Audio Journal 2014
The Assignment: Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen five-second segments.

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2014. You will then select one five-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen five-second segments together in chronological order to form one single one-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should be of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.

When done, upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud. Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, December 29, 2014.

Length: Your finished work should be 60 seconds long.

A very pretty glass with curves made many harmonics as the ice went in. Took around 15 samples. A couple were reserved for waveform synthesis - the rest went straight onto a 'drum' track. From there it came together quickly.
Nothing but ice, glass and water.

Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series on the first Thursday of 2012. Revisiting it a year and two years later, on the first Thursdays of 2013 and 2014, provided a fitting way to begin the new year. Now, at the start of the fourth year of the Disquiet Junto, it is a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a weekly habit. It’s beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.

I participated in the Cities and Memory: Oblique Strategies project with a field recordings as well as a reimagined sound, so I was pretty exited to find that we should work with the O. S. cards in this project... I went to the oblicard.com site and drew "Not building a wall but making a brick" - got curious and pushed the "what is this" button - when I wanted to return I, of course, got a new card this time "Use an old idea" - then I really got curious and pressed the round "generate a new card" arrow to see what would happen... I got the "not building a wall..." again. So I set out - found a few tracks I liked - and the it dawned on me - stay simple and use an existing idea - Lately I 've been working on layering field recordings, to make up a new reality, so I took three recordings and simply put them on top of each other to form a new track. These are the recordings and artist behind them, thanks for sharing!

I bought a deck of Oblique Strategies in 2001 (5th edition) from Enos webshop. Loved it ever since. The card I drew asked "When is it for?"... in our case, this was obvious: One minute past midnight.

Added a reverse piano melody with NI Giant, a Meringue Plugin and an very brutal EQ, which left only a band between 300 and 6000 Hertz - safe for playing after midnight without waking someone ;-)

**Disquiet Junto Project 0171: Oblicardo**

Rework a pre-existing field recording in response to an Oblique Strategies card.

This project is the fourth in an ongoing occasional series that focus on late-night ambience. Collectively these nocturnal endeavors are being called “One Minute Past Midnight.” No one’s work will be repurposed without their permission, and it’s appreciated if you post your track with a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial reuse, reworking, and sharing.

The steps for this project are as follows:

Step 1: The primary goal of this project is to explore the inspiration provided by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt’s Oblique Strategies cards. First published commercially in 1975, and revised iteratively since then, the set consists of numerous gnomic instructions that are alternately direct and, well, oblique. If you are unfamiliar with the cards, you might want to read up on them a little.

Step 2. You’ll be reworking a pre-existing audio track based on the instructions inherent in a specific Oblique Strategies card. Select a track from one of the three previous projects in this series, #0160 from January 22, 2015, #0163 from February 12, 2015, and #0170 from April 2, 2015. All three of these previous projects involve field recordings made of the sound one minute past midnight:

Step 3: When choosing, per Step 2, a pre-existing track, confirm the track is
available for creative reuse. Many should have a Creative Commons license
available for creative reuse. Many should have a Creative Commons license stating such, and if you’re not sure just check with the responsible Junto participant.

Step 4: Select the Oblique Strategies card that will serve as your guide. If you have a deck, then pull one card randomly from it. If you don’t have a deck, then use an online tool, such as the website oblicard.com. When you go to oblicard.com you will immediately see the card that has been assigned to you.

Step 5: Rework the track from Step 2 in response to the instructions inherent in the card from Step 4.

Step 6: Upload your track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 7: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Length: The length of your finished work should be one minute.

When is it for? [disquiet0171-oblicardo]

My Oblicard: "Imagine the music as a series of disconnected events" I really liked this one. 
So naturally I felt this called for a cut up. I took one track from each of the three previous One Minute Past Midnight Juntos and patched them together in pieces. I did no further editing to them.

As A Series Of Disconnected Midnights (disquiet0171-oblicardo)

I worked on a track from disquiet 0160 by Aedes Aegypti,

Quoting description:
"A mysterious, recurring bleep from the schoolyard on the other side of my back fence sounding at the frequency of 3200 (G7). Whatever it is, it's still beeping at random intervals and with varied attacks and decibel levels."

The Oblique Strategies card I got was "Take away as much mystery as possible. What is left?". I admit clicking several times before I settled down with this one. And then I remembered that mysterious bleep in the original track. So I opened it in Audacity, showing spectrogram to locate the bleep more easily. Then I performed some surgery and pasted it in a new stereo track. Why was it mysterious? Literally speaking, because it was different from the bulk of sounds of the track, i.e. contradicting the rule. In such cases we suspect some complexity behind. After reasoning this way I looped it to make a mechanical beat as the second layer, like it was some simple device producing the bleep, and panned the layers away. The sound was not singular any more, but part of a regular pattern.  So instead of complexity it should imply some simplicity of origin. However,I can hear some vague melodies in the resulting track that were hidden before. Conclusion: what is left is mystery, the more you remove the more is left.

In total darkness or in a very large room, very quietly
Listen to the quiet voice - don't break the silence.
Retrace your steps towards the insignificant.
Is there something missing? (Only a part, not the whole.)
The most important thing is the thing most easily forgotten.
Ask your body:
    Is it finished?
        Would anybody want it?
              When is it for?
                      Do the words need changing?

Go outside. Shut the door. Breathe more deeply.

Disconnect from desire. Give way to your worst impulse.
Faced with a choice do both.

What mistakes did you make last time?
Discard an axiom, once the search is in progress, something will be found.
Just carry on.

Abandon normal instruments - reverse - turn it upside down.
Distorting time...
     Where's the edge?
          Where does the frame start?
Try faking it!

Change nothing and continue with immaculate consistency.
Take a break - cut a vital connection.
Remember those quiet evenings.
Give the game away.
