Side by side along the pitched ridge.

3 Tracks grabbed live from the Stoch 4 Lunetta instrument. Drum track was run first against a sparse metronome. Two melodic lines dubbed over; once the loop point had been fixed. Chromaticism was determined by the native trilling of the Stoch. Final mix balanced out in PC software; just light filtering and pan/levels.

The Stoch generously delivered structure without prior deliberation - it was challenging for this purpose to achieve interaction with the triggers to form a plausible tight loop from the percussive bursts. The two instrumental tracks are bound together by switch selected scale distributions. Their triggering was manipulated to hook motifs into the phrasing accents of the base percussion loop.

Axial [disquiet0153-groovelock]

Used my own track - Axial - already randomly generated and waiting to come to terms with. Picked up  Steve Moshier's — No Cause for Alarm (disquiet0153-groovelock) - a solid contrast of speed/density and sat well harmonically. Stacked the loops in PC sequencer, with some re-pitching into bass and scattering into higher registers. Braided a long echoing software synth across to hold it all together and mimic Steve's voicing.

Spoiled for choice with so many great samples ... used a couple more as meat for effects/filters and sprinkled them through. Thanks to:

The Assignment: Create a track from two locked grooves.

This week’s Disquiet Junto project builds on last week’s. Last week, 67 different musicians uploaded as many locked grooves. This week we’ll make new music atop the locked grooves. Here are the steps. Note that there are some options:

Step 1: Choose two locked grooves from the set at http://goo.gl/0s4WmM. You can accomplish this in several ways. You can choose random numbers between 1 and 67 and use those tracks, or you can just select the tracks you most want to work with. Note that most of the tracks should be set to allow, via Creative Commons, for non-commercial re-use. However, if you aren’t sure, please contact the musician to confirm.

Step 2: Make a new track alternating the two locked grooves for between one and two minutes.

Step 3: Use the track that resulted from step 2 as the foundation for a new piece of music. Transform it as you desire, which might include altering the foundational track and adding new material atop it.

Step 4: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

CoAxial [disquiet0154-grooveunlocked]

After a couple of failed experiments, decided to keep it simple and cadge around sampling of the melodic hints from the originals. Nuts and bolts sequencing, but set up the playback as if being run through 'shutters' at mismatched rates, so the coincidence varies. The Salamander version features as a highly fragmented&delayed background drift.

Tachistoson [disquiet0155 - Mixmatch]

OK, hope it doesn't stretch the rules too far... A year spent jamming tables in a SQL warehouse; did grow some vegetables, but no decent date ordered catalogue of audio projects. Synopsis? = calendar is represented here by 12 months detailed daily weather data from logging station at the end of the road, downloaded, stitched and mangled per DBA's professional manner. Pushed as series into Arduino controller, and spooled back out algorithmically as MIDI for recording. Approx. 5 sec each month.

As a 'journal' it reflects the spirit and experiences of the year, and summarisies the audio techniques I've mucked about with.

Disquiet Junto Project 0156: Audio Journal 2014
The Assignment: Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen five-second segments.

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2014. You will then select one five-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen five-second segments together in chronological order to form one single one-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should be of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.

A very pretty glass with curves made many harmonics as the ice went in. Took around 15 samples. A couple were reserved for waveform synthesis - the rest went straight onto a 'drum' track. From there it came together quickly.

Hydra [Disquiet Junto Project 0157: A Little Ice Music]

The speech is sliced by a step sequencer driving attenuator, filter resonance & centre, and wet level of delay effects. The sequencer is set to chatter chaotically against the beat, and the drive levels slowly wind down to allow speech fragments through. 
A couple of clippings were wave shaped as pitched drone interjections. 
Only non-vocal additions were the bass synth. line and bass pitched drum rhythms.

Disquiet Junto Project 0158: Syllable Gumbo
The Assignment: Go from noise to signal with words.

Quite often Disquiet Junto projects actively avoid the human voice. This week’s project engages directly with the voice, and with language.

Step 1: Select the least important story on the front page of your local newspaper or the home page of your local newspaper’s website.

Step 2: Select the first or first two sentences of that story. Combined the resulting text should have between roughly 15 and 25 words.

Step 3: Record yourself, or someone else, reading the text aloud. You can use text-to-speech, though it is by no means required.

Step 4: Break the recording from step 3 into tiny parts.

Step 5: Produce an original piece of music in which the randomized “noise” of those tiny parts heard out of order slowly, over the course of one or two minutes, comes to form the full original statement.

Step 6: Add tonal and rhythmic material to the results of step 5.

Disquiet Junto Project 0160: One Minute Past Midnight
The Assignment: Make a one-minute field recording starting right at midnight (wherever you are).

This week’s project is very simple. It asks that you make a field recording of sound, just one single minute, starting at a specific time: midnight.

From simple things complex things sometimes grow, and this project is a hopeful initial step toward a variety of related projects that may spring up over the course of 2015, perhaps even culminating in some sort of collection, maybe even in a physical space along the lines of the “Sonic Frame” installation at the San Jose Museum of Art (that piece largely drew its sonic material from an earlier Junto project). No one’s work will be repurposed without their permission, and it’s appreciated if you post your track with a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial reuse and sharing.

The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Record audio, outdoors or indoors, at midnight wherever you are.

Lingering Kief Dog [Disquiet Junto Project 161: Netmix Relabel]

A lighthearted and fun Project.

Fed the girl in the box a few different things. Tried playing "same game" but the colours wouldn't disappear when I lined them up. Soon realised that sequencing looked pretty tedious with the copy-and-drag-mouse-life. Was pushing uphill loading in stuff with loose beats and eccentric instrumentation.

So, found a track with a solid beat and big, slabbed sounds - an old one I'd had fun mocking up but never considered 'finished'. Suddenly the squares came to life!

Ran mix and match sections in reverse with slightly shortened period, and got a noisy but much improved tune for my trouble. Smudged some reverb onto recording in Audacity to loosen the forwards/backwards click and jolt it had picked up. Done.

Boxed [Disquiet Junto Project 0162: Junto in a Box]

Who wants to hear traffic and TV's, doors, clatter and neighbours? So, of course, I went for subdued natural sounds, and found the end result a little foreboding. 
Is there a message in it? Will the sunrise ever come? Look to the east, and be thankful.

Approx. 5 sec grabs taken from "One Minute Alice Springs" and "Third night of rain" were manipulated to fill the 60sec frame: time stretch, filtered reverb resonance, delay lines and the usual kit... This was sat alongside longer takes from "Spin Cycle" (for rich bottom end noise drones and white noise extracted as breathing) and "One Minute Alice Springs" (to restore the natural landscape somewhat).

The Assignment: Create a new late-night ambience with sounds from a handful of pre-existing field recordings.

This project is the second in what will be an ongoing occasional series that focus on late-night ambience. Collectively these nocturnal endeavors are being called “One Minute Past Midnight.” No one’s work will be repurposed without their permission, and it’s appreciated if you post your track with a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial reuse and sharing.

Found some simple but marvelously rhythmic fireworks on www archive : https://archive.org/details/DatongFireworks

Pulled some samples and headed off with habitual concentration of pitches, inference of melody, fixing of beats = make a song in sequencer ... but wait ... why exactly?

So took said 1/2 a 'song', and reblended free form in audacity with emphasised short samples from original.
Time & pitch shift applied to dilate and mimic the live recording.

Was particularly intrigued by Marc's reference to 'ARC' - and chased that notion.

Arc of Juntong Fireworks [Disquiet Junto Project 0164: Junto Hay Fat Choy]

This was all news to me, and ten min. YouTube by his kids, of the Sonambient barn, was so intense I forgot all about the chair.

So many 'resonances' turned up in this project ... many of them cultural not audible! Eventually started to get some focus back onto the artifact itself. Settled on notions of mass production, and the sonic environments Bertoia likely deconstructed into his sculptures.

No chair available, so used contact mike on similar materials: welded wire mesh, and wire rods - struck scraped and dragged. Processed sounds were then sequenced out onto a time vs pitch 'log' grid, similar to the chair's essential form. A linear beat was sat below, including a FreeSound spot welder sample. (http://www.freesound.org/people/Ferdinger/sounds/146232/) There are some silences allowed for, as the 'wire spacing' increases to the centre line, and as Bertoia claimed his chair was more space than form.

The image? A little oblique, but one of the many paths this project lead down. From Thompson's "On Growth and Form" from the 40's ... ambitious polymath opera, but much in there for music if that's how you see things.

Harry Bertoia designed his iconic side chair for Knoll in 1952. This chair — this functional metal sculpture — is used around the world, from cafes to offices, patios to homes.

Meshed Expansions [disquiet0165-bertoiachair]

Short section taken from approx. 1:10min in : split to 4x speeds as described. 2x were slowed with pitch and time shift, 1 with time shift only.

All 4 were loosely laid in turns onto a time base, then 'arranged' into 4 registers of accompaniment - in a sense the AABBCCxxxx aspect of the project is more 'vertical' than 'horizontal'.

No beats&loops&delay or sampling, all paintbrush-style freely worked in Audacity. Some reverb and reversals used to blend up a palette.

A lot going on in 1910; maybe not so ancient?

[Disquiet Junto Project 0166: Slow by Steps]
Take a pre-existing track, slow it in descending states, and then add something to it.

This week we’re slowing down an ancient piece of audio, dating from 1910, and adding sounds atop it to create one continuous composition.

Step 1: Download at http://goo.gl/aMlHXm a public-domain recording of Eugène Ysaÿe performing “Rondino” by composer Henri Vieuxtemps. (Note: If you land on the new archive.org site and can’t figure out how to download, click on the “exit beta” button in the upper-right-hand corner of the webpage to go to the original archive.org site design, where the downloading is self-evident.)

Step 2: Choose a short segment of the recording, roughly between three and five seconds. Label it as Segment A.

Step 3: Create a Segment B by slowing Segment A to half its original speed.

Step 4: Create a Segment C by slowing Segment B to half its original speed.

Step 5: Create a Segment D by slowing Segment C to half its original speed.

Step 6: Create an underlying foundational track by stitching instances of A, B, C, and D together in that order. 
	Recommended for a five-second segment is Ax4, Bx2, C, D (or AAAABBCD), which would be 100 seconds.

Step 7: Create a new piece of music by recording accompaniment to add to the foundational track, which will otherwise remain unadulterated.

Step 8: Upload the combination of your accompaniment and the foundational track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 9: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Varieux Tempos [Disquiet Junto Project 0166: Slow by Steps]

The easy part : the quietest room has all but the loudest door.
The hard part : working flat face down on the noise floor...

This may be a case where what I find adequately soothing is a little unnerving to others - hope not!

Nothing elaborate here outside the actual project description; mined the quiet sample period for harmonic content; pitched, concentrated and sequenced what I found.

Disquiet Junto Project 0167: Placid Cell
Marking the 3rd anniversary of Bassel Khartabil’s incarceration, turn the silence of a room into something soothing.

This project is the second time that the Junto gathered its resources to pay tribute to the wrongfully imprisoned Creative Commons advocate and coder Bassel. Sunday, March 15, marks the third anniversary of Bassel’s incarceration in Syria.

In Bassel’s honor, this week we’ll make music by taking the loneliness of a small, closed room and making something beautiful and soothing from it.

Step 1: Go into the quietest room in your home and record the room’s tone. Also record the sound of the door being closed.

Step 2: Locate in that track a suitably quiet 10 consecutive seconds. Also locate the moment when the door is closed.

Step 3: Locate in those 10 seconds a handful of signature sonic events, moments, however small or subtle, that stand out from the general silence.

Step 4: Create an original composition that begins with the door being closed, proceeds through the 10 unadulterated seconds of room tone, and after which samples of those sonic events from Step 3 are transformed into something soothing. This being a project about isolation, you cannot add any external sound elements.

Step 5: Upload the combination of your accompaniment and the foundational track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Two Point Four Square Meters [Disquiet Junto Project 0167: Placid Cell]

Built from a couple of seconds nighttime recording; wingbeats and shrieks of flying foxes fighting over fruit on palm tree in backyard.

Brief clips set up as 'drum' hits, and fed into resonant filters and delay for 'bass line'. Mid length clips fed through multiple stages of reverb and pattern driven filters for ambient wrapper - with some bleed back into the bass filters and delay lines. 'Melody' is a mash of the original shrieks, without effects, but layered re-pitched playback.

Disquiet Junto Project 0168: Three of a Kind
Create an original, multi-part piece with a single audio source.

Step 1: You will be making a single track with three different parallel lines. 
It might be easiest to think of them as melody, rhythm, and an ambient foundational bed, but you might also do three counterposed rhythms, 
or a drone of three varying ambient beds. It’s up to you.

Step 2: Select a single source of audio. Perhaps it’s a segment of pre-existing track, or a single note on a favorite instrument, 
or a short recording of you humming or breathing.

Step 3: Transform that single source of audio to produce each of the three separate lines you plotted in Step 1.

Step 4: Record the track with those three lines running simultaneously.

Syagrus Shriek [Disquiet Junto Project 0168: Three of a Kind]

Single live track = Sound of 12 FireFoxes battling for CPU cycles. Minimising the windows doesn't stop them, but has drastic effects on the tempo. Maximising them all makes them glitch along eccentrically, in a manner I found satisfying.

OK - so it's mobile and cross-platform (if it works with your browser at all...) but, sheesh, 8-bit micro's sure did it better!

Wasted couple of hours trying to reverse engineer a local cached version of the app; to apply own sound sets, or modulate the controls algorithmically. Concluded there was no point.

Disquiet Junto Project 0170: A Glitch in the Night
Create a one-minute track that takes the project title as its guiding aesthetic.

This project is the third in an ongoing occasional series that focus on late-night ambience. Collectively these nocturnal endeavors are being called “One Minute Past Midnight.” No one’s work will be repurposed without their permission, and it’s appreciated if you post your track with a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial reuse, reworking, and sharing.

In total darkness or in a very large room, very quietly

Stacked Deck [Disquiet Junto Project 0171: Oblicardo]

The obvious analogue vs digital contrast seemed to be a clock, and I've been curious as to the 'sound' of a digital clock for a while. Wrapping a 30 turn pickup around the clock got some strong strobes; but mostly 50Hz hum - so - something more drastic needed. Tapped off scanning waveforms from the LED display lines = strong strobed signals! (think mains voltage safety if trying this...)

Digital = clock display = recorded through analogue distortion/LFO-VCA/harmonic VCF
Analogue = stopwatch = processed through digital distortion/LFO-VCA/envelope VCF

Mixed into a 'tune' based on notes ADAC, using AudioMulch surface. Having too much fun; the <2min trim is clumsy.

Digitalis [Disquiet Junto Project 0172: Digital-Analog Conflater]

Took on this week's project at least in 'spirit' if not purist interpretation - maybe this is a remix not an OverVersion?
It was hard to see quite how to fit the kind of live instrumental playing I (shyly) do, over this track. But the straight stacked bass was like an empty road dead ahead; kind of beckoning. Just needed something for the top end...

Made 7 'voices' synched/derived from original track; using mostly filter resonance to stripe the arrangement, distortions to texture the voices, delay lines/gating to set up pulsing rhythms and reverberation to get feedback sustain. Settled them all into a rough agreement, then ran the track live while manipulating the mix&balance for recording.

Bathurst Burr [Disquiet Junto Project 0173: Over Version]

" Nettles (Urtica species) are shrubby weeds covered in fine stinging hairs. The opposite leaves have toothed margins, and the sprays of tiny flowers are greenish and unattractive. " - Tim Low, Wild herbs of Australia and New Zealand.
It remains to be seen exactly what relation this bears to the composition and interpretation of music.
