Instrumental Violence Radio Show

A one-hour selection by @nicolas-jaar aired first on May 15th, 2021 as part of the Sonic Liberation Front on @radioalhara, an initiative for Palestine by a group of audio platforms and sound artists who came together to unify their sound for Palestine and protest against the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

"Hello,
 
Thank you for inviting me to be here today. 

These are difficult days and it is difficult to express the feelings that I have inside. 

We have seen the horrors of Israeli occupation. We have seen the hypocrisy of the European and American media. We have heard the silence of our peers. And we have felt the screams inside Al Aqsa, in Sheikh Jarrah, in Gaza, in Haifa, in Jaffa, in Lydda. But this is only news to those who don't know. 
In reality, this is nothing new. 

The past 2 weeks have been a microcosm for the past 20 years, the past 40 years years, the past 70 years. 

The Israeli government is a racist settler colonial project committed to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. The legacies of systemic violence, racism and dispossession shaped by colonialism must stop. 

Today this means standing up and signaling clearly our support, our solidarity and our love for Palestine. Complicity with Israeli war crimes is found in silence and we cannot tolerate silence. 

As I speak something else is happening in another part of the world that is also very close to my heart. Chileans are right now electing  155 citizens who will write a new constitution for the country. It will replace the constitution that has been in place since the years of the military dictatorship. This constitution will be the first anywhere in the world to be written by an equal number of men and women. The only reason this moment of hope is possible in Chile is because of the incredible social movements that rose up to tell truth to power, to tell the story of life in the face of death. 
The courage and determination of Chilean activists, writers, artists has been astounding. I am sure many of them are inspired and influenced by the courage of Palestinians living under occupation. 

These social movements are creating change, and the forces of Empire are having a difficult time trying to control this change. When we see Israel bombing the tower that houses AP and Al Jazeera in Gaza, we understand that this war is being waged on multiple fronts. Journalism is one of them. Art and music is also one. 

So thank you for this initiative Radio Alhara and Recordat. 

This mix is different from any mix I've ever played. 

I'm gonna play a mix I made for myself, never meant to be shared. It's the music I play to feel better, in some ways it's my own kind of therapy, it gives me hope that life can always shine in the dark."

Instrumental Violence Radio Show is back on Rádio Quântica.

The Instrumental Violence crew wants to show solidarity and support to the Palestinian people living in the West Bank and Gaza that are fighting the oppression by Israeli occupying forces.

On the first hour of the show Migas brings us a selection of Muslimgauze’s discography, whose music was heavily influenced by the conflicts and history in the Muslim world, punctuated by excerpts of interviews of Yasser Arafat and Norman Finkelstein discussing the Israel/Palestine conflict.

The second hour, Assafrao mixes through the compilation Palestine by Al Gharib. This compilation brings together 35 electronic music artists such as Deadbeat, Varg, Call Super, Nene H, U.R.Trax and many more and all the proceeds from the sales of the music will be donated to the Olive Kids, an Australian registered volunteer only organisation, partnered with Al-Amal Institute for Hope, dedicated to improving the lives of Palestinian children in Palestine and in refugee camps within neighbouring countries through financial support, education and medical assistance.

q. pls introduce yourself
a. Artur / mu tate / mu

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. it always starts with a few pieces that capture a particular mood or have a distinctive sonic quality that makes me want to build a whole hour of music around. i’m mostly interested in the emotional response that inevitably comes with listening and less so in the production as such. i like to take my time so each mix ends up soundtracking at least a month of my life. here the spoken word bits set the scene, instrumental pieces then try to accentuate and expand on that theme, take it further or in another direction all together. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

q. what’s the best way enjoy your mix?
a. i mostly record mixes with the idea of home listening since it’s my favourite way to enjoy music. it’s an evening listen rather than morning for this one.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
a. a burkhard vogtherr hombre chair that i got off etsy for £70. My favourite thing to sit on and to look at. 

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. yes and no. we’re still working on some bits for the recent 3XL/Utter record like physical copies and a video. other than that i’m doing things at a much slower pace, exchanging stems but nothing that i myself plan on showing.
