Growing up, I always thought The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” was a perfect love song, even though some lines didn’t sit well with me.

I imagine that will be most listeners’ experience with “The Serious One.” At first blush, it sounds like a sincere declaration of fully requited love. A careful reading between the lines hints that things are not as they seem and that our trusty narrator may not be worthy of that trust.

I’ll leave it at that, but I’d love to hear what you take from the song!

Oh yeah - the lyrics refer to being “your straight man.” In case it’s not clear, that’s one person’s role in a comedy duo, not a declaration of heterosexuality!

The lyrics follow a protagonist entwined in a romantic relationship with a robot. Despite the near-perfect nature of his artificial partner, he yearns for the genuine emotional connection that only a human lover can provide.
