Ambient and other

I am an artist working predominantly with sound, sometimes enhanced with video and photography. My work combines electronic tones with digitally processed acoustic sounds including field recordings and musical instruments. I have produced several site-specific commissions and am particularly interested in the resonance of spaces, their history and atmosphere, and wider notions of place and memory.

Recent works include: Treatments and Textures, a mix of ambient and electroacoustic music for Tate Liverpool’s Sculpture Remixed collection display; Binary, a commission for the National Trust manor house Oxburgh Hall, in which the venue’s Victorian wallpaper was converted into sound; Chimes for a Wall Drawing, a live performance on processed chime bars, guitar and electronics which took Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #1136 as an inspiration and graphic score; Quay Tones, an audiovisual installation which explored the history and atmosphere of the Middle Ages trading port King’s Lynn through images focusing on weathered fragments of architecture and scenery and processed recordings of baroque harpsichord tones and field recordings; Threnody, a site-specific sound installation inspired by Korean Royal Ancestral Shrine Music, created for the Kyung Hee University Museum of Arts, Seoul.

My work has also been shown in exhibitions and festivals including Seeing Sound 2 (Bath Spa University, UK), Wonderpia (Nanji Studio Gallery, Seoul), Re/Flux (ICA, London), Odd Place (ARTSIDE, Seoul), BBC Film Festival (UK), SoundImageSound VII (Conservatory of Music, University of the Pacific, USA), A Thing About Machines (Herbert Gallery, Coventry, UK), Transfixed Motion / Transitory Still (Sheffield Institute of Art and Design Gallery, UK), and Sound:Space (South Hill Park, Bracknell, UK).

I have also published several audio CDs. Time Lapse (Hibernate Recordings) uses guitars, chime bars and vintage keyboards to create warm and emotive melodies, fragmented and submerged among beds of droning ambient textures and environmental sounds. Quarry Bank (Time Released Sound) explores the history of an Industrial Revolution cotton mill, blending site-specific recordings of machinery with electronically treated acoustic instruments. Kollane (Time Released Sound) was created during a residency at the Estonian Artists’ Association in Tallinn, inspired by the vibrant autumnal foliage and historic architecture of the city. My debut vinyl LP Under A Name That Hides Her (Hibernate Recordings) is a melancholic and romantic album inspired by nostalgic recollection of the guitar bands I listened to as a teenager.

Created instinctively and intuitively by Marconi Union, Weightless has been claimed to have therapeutic properties in the way the track almost appears to have a heartbeat running through it which slows down very gently throughout the piece, encouraging a deep sense of relaxation in the body, It's use of specific rhythms, beep bass tones, frequencies and intervals induce an almost trance like state in the listener.

The ‘Realm Of Consciousness’ voyage commences with Tale Of Us’ Lies - a fitting introduction with
quivering keys and restrained percussion that engenders an ominous suspense ahead of Monoloc’s
enigmatic industrial techno crunch, Phoenix. Shifting through the haunting chords of Recondite’s dynamic
Murphy’s Law, to the brooding synth of Poseidon by Ukrainian duo Woo York, the realisation of Afterlife
utopia is upon us. The repetitive, mesmerising synth and effective reverb that Somne creates with Triangle
is an odyssey within itself. From there, John Hester’s expertly woven ‘Logan’ is a feverish techno stab that
transverses through the emotional senses, transitioning to Locked Groove’s adroitly crafted Emeralds, to
Ryan James Ford’s ambient, albeit percussive, techno cut Toree Bahrstad. Die Wiederkehr is the outcome
of Obscure Shape & SHDW’s collaboration, which incorporates facets of techno and trance that have
been shaped with real guile and finesse. Mind Against round off the compilation with Gravity - a
mystifying ambience and a fitting title as we touch back down to planet earth.

Wil Bolton's 'Maemi' takes its title from the Korean word for cicadas. Recorded live at Cafe OTO, London during the Home Normal label's Homenormalism festival on 3 August 2013, Wil weaves effected guitar drones, synthesizer, music box, effects pedals and environmental sounds creating a slow moving dronescape. The environmental sounds - timber mill machinery, traffic, and the buzz of cicadas - were recorded in Incheon, South Korea in August 2012, during an artist residency at the Incheon Art Platform.
