Disquiet Junto Project 0412: One Chord Wonder
The Assignment: Play an extended chord where the instrumentation of each note changes as the piece proceeds.

Step 1: Choose a chord, any chord.

Step 2: Make a list of the notes that the chord is comprised of.

Step 3: Record a piece of music in which each of the notes in the chord are played by different instruments (more broadly: different sound sources).

Step 4: As the piece proceeds, change each of the instruments/sources, while never altering the notes that make up the chord.

Seven More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0412” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your track.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0412” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your track. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your track.

The chord is A7 sus 4; the music is played by 21 STK instruments in ChucK. The overall gain gradually cycles via an LFO. On each pass, each instrument is randomly assigned a note. The LFO also influences the overall velocity for each note, which is drawn from a random distribution for each instrument on each play of the chord. The placement in the stereo field is also randomized. The length of each chord is also subject to a small degree of randomness. I run multiple overlapping versions of the code that use various inversions.

This turned into a pretty fun little minimal techno jog.  The chord here is E major add 9, although it really isn't because the voices and oscillators are not tuned to E.  The joys of quantized sequencing plus Modular (VCV in this case).  I wanted to do everything in VCV Rack, because its self contained and easy for me to get something out, so you are hearing 8 plaits, which are all in tune.  The Pitch and Gates are being sent out via the new browser based version of Orca (the live coding tool).  Befaco rampage providing envelopes for percussion.  

My 4 instruments here are 4 voices provided by the Vocal and speech synthesis modes of Plaits.  Some compression, mixing, recording and reverb applied to taste.

Track notes: What a horrendously bleak week it's been. I'm a bit haunted and depressed by the climate change-induced bushfires which are currently burning my country (AU) alive at the moment. Not to mention the complete lack of action/leadership from our government. In particular, the viral video footage of a koala being rescued and literally screaming in agony is one of the most devastating things I think I've ever watched/heard. I feel like the country I grew up in - cultural, spiritual, environmental - is disappearing rapidly. So, I'm pretty down at the moment. Very down.

With that in mind, I approached this week's assignment by taking a bunch of instruments (vibes, wurli, mellotron, horns) and grafted them to a Fmaj7/9 chord (FACEG) with instruments coming and going across their assigned notes. I then processed them slightly, exported and then crudely tuned the track down in Audacity by an octave. It's a pretty accurate sonic representation of my state of mind at present.

Disquiet0412 -(((one chord - Aural Antithesis

I slightly modified the assignment (read: I misunderstood it at first and did something different) to portray how even a more-or–less okay piece of music can be degraded and subverted by being used as aural mogadon by a call centre, especially if you’ve been listening for 40 minutes and your ears are bleeding.

This uses a YouTube clip by Channel Swimmer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s6bv4yayOk which has 1hr10min of on-hold music, some of it quite fun listening. Most of this is based on progressively more degraded versions of the first piece, lasting a couple of minutes. I kept the whole thing and put the rest through a sliding stretch (several times) in order to bring down the time and turn it into an appropriately and increasingly featureless blur of sound.

The last degradation, using an Audacity distortion plugin I just discovered, is actually the sort of thing I would rather listen to if I had to be on hold for any length of time. That, or the sound of the relevant company’s CEO being flogged with red hot chains and rolled in salt.

The Assignment: Record music intended to sound just as garbled as the hold music on a phone call.

Step 1: Think of a time when you were put on hold by customer service or waiting for a conference call to begin. Think about such a situation when the hold music sounded like it had been run through a washing machine, or put through a bit crusher, or photocopied 100 times in sequence before it got to your ear.

Step 2: Record a short piece of music intended to sound just as garbled as the hold music on a modern phone call. Think of this as “hold noise.”

Aural Antithesis : An audio art project stationed in the Cascadian sector. Focusing on live modular synthesizer since 2013, but experimenting with many sound capable devices. Expect Noise, Ambient, Drone, experimental, circuit bent and electronic sounds.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.
