When she struggled to define her place in the world; when existential questions continuously circled her mind; she came here and sat in silence. The marbled room was as high as it was vast. The space was decorated with regal statues and innate sculptures, while beautiful paintings adorned the walls from floor to ceiling. In the centre a single bench offered a view of the entire space, and it was here she would sit for hours, focusing on the present, not the future. 

As well as being one of the minds behind Lyon's Hard Fist Records, Tushen Raï has stamped his style on productions for Tom Tom Disco, The Magic Movement and Esthetique; solo, as a remixer and alongside musical partner (and fellow Hard Fist co-founder) Cornelius Doctor. Now he's embarking on his first solo EP 'Drum Circles', a sonics meditation on 'an imagination weakened resulting from the cultural globalization.' A homage to diverse cultures, practices and belief systems, the trance-inducing tracks blend a melting pot of influences and sounds, motivated by curiosity and an open-minded approach.

Probably named after a sublime song from English visionary producer Robert Wyatt, the freshly born Age Of Self is a brand new label/platform, built to stay genre-proof and without musical boundaries. As its very first release, they deliver 3 obscure club-not-club edits from the two Tel Aviv legends Nadav Spiegel and Maor Anava AKA Autarkic & Hectik.
This sophomore EP boasts a set of well picked edits which features the wonderful ‘Shit I Know’, which nods to Anava and Speigel’s love of japanese folklore. With a track guaranteed to light up the most tripped out wonky dancefloors. 
A slow paced broken beat mingles with a sludgy baseline, detuned guitars and a chanted vocal to create a slo-mo, lo-fi, creeper of a track which calmly (but not sensibly) gets those feet moving. 
Age of Self might well be a comment on the atomisation of society, it might be a phrase which rolls off the tongue nicely but whatever it means, however well you need to know yourself, this is one that you don’t want to listen to alone, Shit I know is best enjoyed with friends and loud, and can only leave you feeling excited for what else is to come from Anava and Spiegel’s new mouthpiece for a programme of music where anything goes. Since the Covid-19 lockdown began the music and events industry has been thrown into unchartered waters, leaving artists and online media in a financially vulnerable position, and with much more time on their hands.

To help some of those artists, and provide Ransom Note with much-needed financial support, in April we reached out to some friends of the website with the challenge to make a track in collaboration with another producer, musician or vocalist, remotely. The result was ‘Pen Pals’, a compilation featuring 15 collaborations. 

Following the reception of the first release, we decided to embark on volume two, enlisting a fresh group of artists and musicians to take up the challenge. 40 artists stepped up to the plate and 19 tracks were produced culminating in a compilation spanning a vast musical breadth.

Due to the current situation we’ve increased royalties for all artists involved and, whilst the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions apply, accounting will be processed fortnightly. Profits from the compilation will also provide financial support for Ransom Note who have been heavily impacted by the halt of the events industry. 

On Juneteenth (19/06/2020) we will donate all profits from sales to Black Minds Matter - a UK charity making mental health topics relevant and accessible for all black people. On this date Bandcamp will be matching all sales with a donation to NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Playground Records' new release comes from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, specially created for its rising talent Ed Dix. In this edition he delivers us a mysterious EP of 3 original mixes loaded with deep basslines and acid modulations plus 2 remixes of surgical precision by Stevie R & Parisinos and Velmondo.
It all starts with ‘Halusinasi’. Powerful drums, a bass note floating in the air, crunchy sounds jumping around, acid modulations, a psycho pad, an explosive cocktail waiting to explode.

No FTR is short for No Future: Daniel Monaco wants to represent a trip into an obscure place maybe lost in space maybe doomed in a parallel universe, the drums are sometimes mixed with metallic trashcans alike sounds, melodies suggesting feelings of hope and despair, Sequenced synth bass are mixed with live performed basslines trying to create a muddy yet sharp rolling grooves. Some intentional overdo on the arrangement was made to recall the fullness in sound typical of few old school Italo tracks Daniel Monaco is fond of.
The EP is a Dark Italo concept containing 3 originals and 3 remixes by artists such as Golden Soul Label Boss and unstoppable producer James Rod, Korean artist Shubostar owner of Uju Records known for her Cosmic Touch and also favorite Burning Man Mayan Warrior DJ, Slow Motion label boss Franz Scala pioneer of the new Italian Wave, a true creator and Italo Master.

PRÉMIÈRE: Daniel Monaco - Space Jail (Cosmic Version) [Logical Records]

Julian Fleker is an artist from Argentina, a friend from our origins in the underground of Buenos Aires. Ricardo Ruben's project starting from the name to the artistic side face and composition takes a humorous place, although his musical background is serious. Ricardo Ruben is a character from a song by the 80's rock group Los Twists that carried a share of acid humor. It is then that the name of this Ep is not surprising, nor the way to face a different compositional work, wanting to highlight an idiosyncrasy of personal and local search.
“Sinatra is not dead, Yabran told me” plays with black humor and a story of an Argentine media gate. Yabran was a businessman accused of mafias and corruption that ended in a suicide case where everyone doubted his true death as someones think with Sinatra too. Ricardo Ruben is a drummer and the track is a tremendous banger full of percussions, and acid arpeggios of 303 in staccato where a real drum solo joins playing on top by rolling fills. A song that gallops sideways and that is a traktor pushing pistons like crazy. Weird, jazzy, creepy and bizarre black humor, really irresistible.
“De la cabina a la parrilla” (From the booth to the grill) is another title that plays with the local humor, Ricardo Ruben talks about those Argentine meetings where everything walks around meat and barbecue, and the DJ booth can be set up next to the embers. Diving into that personal identity, his search for sound combines modulations that twist and shoot up and down, hi hats and rides that filter and deform, cowbells in front, gloomy melodies of outof-tune oscillators that give something of a grotesque circus and then come out in synth leads that carry us to an ecstatic trance.
“Sinatra is not dead, Yabran told me” first remix is in charge of Colossio. By slowing it down and adding dirty snares with more cadence, he adds a touch of gloomy sense of humor. Colossio gives it an atmosphere of party music in an abandoned amusement park. That tone of making death funny and filling of skeletons with colors that Mexicans have. Twisted synths simulate monstrous laughter, the modulated bells fill with mystery and intrigue but in the end it all resolves into a charming dance.
Alvaro Cabana and Silicondisco's second remix transform it into a dark bomb for dancefloors. Battery fills that are like whips, shake and sadomasochism. An immense almost techno kick where the acid modulations spill out, giving the track an erotic aesthetic, with a leather shine and a nighttime mood that transports us to a rotten club in Madrid where everything is attitude and exhibitionism.
