In The Dark

It's been a pleasant challenge to craft Mark's adlibed voice.

Tried finger drumming... moments of 3/4, others 4/4... then I remembered Franco Battiato singing about 7/8 measures in Brittish folk, and... why not?

Similar doubts about the chords, I finally built a sliding harmony using groups of notes found along the vocal line.

Many laboratory hours after I got something friendly; time to jam brainlessly a pair of guitars which made some organic company to the voice.

Great temptation of singing with Mark, but I finished the vocal edition by building a final choir instead ;)

The Parting Glass (with Markjbennett)

Songster version was a little ‘copla’ about not being able to be with, nor without, a loved person.  As usual, I’ve ‘upgraded’ it, process from which you only get the final result, normally. 

But, following lyrics’ contradictions, I not only serve parts with different levels of (dis)order in heavy rock - flamenco sauce, but raw vs very cooked parts as well, starting with the improvised phone recording of the very first idea I had to develop the song, so please excuse my failures and noises.

Well, there is something I really love…..you know when the weather’s been extremely hot for so long….then it rains with a storm and thunder, the earth releases this incredible smell…love it. So after the storm I came up with this track. It is a bit psychedelic I guess. I just could see myself under the rain and it feels so good…..liberating…well…you know what I mean. Hey. Thanks for stopping by to see what’s up with me. I hope you are well. What I have noticed recently is, I am like an old dog now when I sleep. I close my eyes and dissolve into my dreams. There, I befriend people I may or may not not know... they may be essences of those past, or imaginative and archetypal beings of some significance. They may contain trace essences of people I know. I can fly, breathe under water, and I may on occasion travel the cosmos in a supernatural sense. I find the realm of dreams to be extraordinarily fascinating. A few years ago, I decided to begin to keep a dream journal which now is just shy of a hundred pages. A future book maybe? This song comes from an amalgamation of several recurring lucid dreams. Conquering and ruling cultures often oppress those they dominate. The oppressed, and those with less power, will always eventually seek justice, representation, and equal power from their subjugators. Those whose culture have been vilified, repressed, and appropriated can regain their power and love by learning about their past, choosing and identifying their cultural heroes for themselves, and restoring their appreciation and celebrations for their ancestors.  

May this song encourage an honest look into your past, acknowledging both the shadow and the light, appreciating the beauty of what was and is, and learning from accomplishments and mistakes to continue our evolution in becoming better co-creators with the planet.

I used some of a bass stem Alpha Roots sent me to make Red Earth Clay and I used the rest of the stem to make Sow Your Seeds. I have one unused bass and drum stem from Alpha Roots that I will make an old school hip hop song with and I may remix his original Hosanna bass stem one day to make a new reggae song. I may also ask Russ if I can make a version of Da Weed using Alpha Roots’ stems one day. After that, I may be complete unless I get gifted some Alpha Roots stems to play with. 

Huge thanks to Chiefo who set the original tone of this song which gave me inspiration for  the lyrics. Big ups to Fady, bit zone, and Lady of Fire Poetry for joining in on this project and adding their collective vibe. Sow Your Seeds

Firstly on easy listening 6/4 bars, I cut some notes out of the main theme so as to give it dynamism, and finally obtained a prime amalgam of 17 quarter notes. I hid any recognizable thing in the accompaniment, and for the organic lines (voice and guitars) I tried the strong rhythm would not fix too much the melodies, first paying a lot of attention, and finally ... just letting me go.
