Japanese-Laotian-Australian artist Fuj kicks of 2015 in much the same fashion as 2014 – with a hotly anticipated solo single on AutomAte Deep!  With such a cultural crossover building up his personal influences, there's something uniquely diverse about Fuj's productions. Clean and crisp on first glance, peer deeper into the abyss and intricate soundscapes appear from below the surface.

Talus Nights weaves a thick electric sunset; effortless, dream-like atmosphere punctured only by the occasional rip of a sublimely filtered synthesizer before disappearing over the horizon.  Aphotic Zone picks up the pace a little with busy, skittish percussive touches and a trippy, cerebral vibe that manages to inspire thought and energy in equal measure.

‘The Frog' unites Fuj & Cirrus for a snapping, driving underground anthem which lets you know exactly what these artists are about. Lumbering but never once losing impact, it's littered with nastily distorted LFO and grinding beat patterns. Not for the faint hearted, Fuj & Cirrus don't disappoint. Cirrus comes next with ‘Ether', again bringing the edgier, grunting sounds present throughout its predecessor, while utilising vocal samples to take you through the drops. The pace is then increased, switching between layers and giving no hope of pulling yourself out of its construction line of snipping drums and lasers.

Fuj offers up next, with climatic, quaking sub bass and smashing kick throughout ‘Gun of a Son'. Its percussion and crashing breaks are intimidating, killing any commercial vibes in the vicinity. Rounding off the EP is ‘Aphotic Zone'; Cirrus jumps on remix duties for Fuj this time, once again integrating their production might and creating a towering concoction of creepy atmospherics and wavering voice notes.

Fuj and Cirrus are not to be underestimated. Between them they're invading the underground and moving towards the big leagues.

Translation delves into the deeper, darker, and more exploratory side of drum & bass with the next installment of the Bassment Beats series featuring a new team of artists who share the same passion for testing the boundaries of the 170 BPM spectrum. Akinsa opens things up with Ichizoku Clan, a shadowy excursion into the dungeon with a fierce mid-bass and a cavernous kick echoing deep into the uncharted. Up next, Fuj gets heavy with Tumbler, unleashing a hypnotic storm of bass and booming industrial drums with a tribalistic edge. Switching into more abstract and experimental territory with Coplanar, Mark Kloud weaves ethereal pads, surging basslines, and crushed breaks into sonic patchwork of beauty and chaos. Broken Promise continues the intrepid, futuristic vibe with Blade, whose snarling mid-bass cuts in and out of snappy breakbeats and shattering FX. Translation founder RogueState ushers in the finale with Origins whose serene pads and staggered drums build into an ominous slow burner.

Akinsa - Ichizoku Clan

Onset Audio proudly presents their 200th release, featuring remixes of signature tracks by leaders in alternative drum & bass: Red Army, Fuj, Owl, Out Of Fuel, dreadmaul and Akinsa. Moody, cavernous atmospherics are emphasized on six experimental bass arrangements. Red Army's take on Ded Sheppard's Run Baby Run is a blistering bass march featuring a hard 4/4 kick progression over unsettling horror samples. Fuj goes into more esoteric territory with an off-kilter reverb-heavy rendition of dreadmaul's Inka while Owl reshapes Lums & [[-CRBL-CTS-]]'s TRIBLMS85 into ominous, spacious orbits. Ded Sheppard is featured again on Out Of Fuel's remix of The Youth, featuring a repeating acid line, progressing with paranoid intensity. dreadmaul slows things way down with a cinematic, downtempo reimagining of Dimensional Dryft's Monuments while Akinsa rounds out the release with a punishing, percussive redub of Madikma's Reason. With over a decade of steady releases, Onset Audio continues to push the boundaries in dnb, halftime, and ambient- this EP is an encapsulation of their sound....
