Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of blood flow throughout the body resulting from the failure of the heart to pump effectively.[11] It is a rapidly fatal medical emergency requiring immediate intervention with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until further treatment can be provided. Cardiac arrest results in rapid loss of consciousness and breathing may be abnormal or absent.[1][2] While cardiac arrest may be caused by heart attack or heart failure, these are not the same, and in 15 to 25% of cases there is a non-cardiac cause.[11][12][13] Some individuals may experience chest pain, shortness of breath or nausea immediately before entering cardiac arrest. Additionally, an elevated heart rate and feelings of light-headedness may occur before the episode.[2] If not intervened by CPR and defibrillation, cardiac arrest typically leads to death within minutes.[11]

Returning to LUX after his funky single Get It on our Aurora series, Carrier is dropping his debut solo EP. Still relatively new to the scene, he's already carved out his own identity and accompanying signature sound. With his debut EP, aptly named By The Machine, he gives us an insight into a funk-laden alternative future where AI has taken control.

The opener track Fantasy draws you in right away. A melodic and enchanting intro portrays a place of safety and stillness, beautiful but with a subdued edge. The soothing vocals calm you down, but the worried feeling never fully goes away. As the drop hits, Carrier switches into overdrive and takes you on a wild ride. The dissonant guitars and flailing bassline drop all pretence and hint at the bleak future this story is about.

Up next is the title track By The Machine. Its haunting intro perfectly encapsulates what's been hinted at before. A tech-driven environment ruled by AI causes an uneasy feeling and a sense of urgency. The driving bassline drags you into the world and keeps you on your toes, almost as if you need to have eyes in your back.

While you keep going, Turrican sets the mood for the next chapter in this story. Conjuring images of days gone past, filled with stacked arcades and vibrant neon lights. The lively, hurried and exciting scenes lift you up and keep you moving. Even though there are still some sinister undertones, Turrican shines rays of happiness and pleasantness in a world run by AI.

After everything that's happened, Wayment is the perfect ending to the EP, delivering a peaceful, yet wry ending. The laid back flow in the drums and playful synths all culminate in a rebellious final drop, underlining the theme and whipping you up one final time before the end.

All in all, the By The Machine EP is a unique piece of work, allowing Carrier to show off his unique style and introducing himself fully to the scene.

His heady mix of distorted filth & saturated breakbeats is the fuel behind a meteoric rise, turning the heads of the scene’s top DJs and talent spotters.  Paired here with regular cohorts, AutomAte’s resident zombie wordsmith Agman Gora and long-time partner Wreckless, this trio of nuclear cuts is aimed directly at the techy dancefloors.

Submarine has already left a trail of destruction in its wake, running deep beneath the surface of a monstrous throbbing body of bass. This steppin’ VIP of the stripped-back, essential roller is set to become a firm favourite of the AutomAte catalogue all over again.

The Hammer brings us back to dry land and delivers an altogether more highly-strung vibe as Philth & Wreckless take their signature sound up to 11 with pounding bass, relentless running breaks and crashing metallics.

Finally, another second hotly awaited remix, Cordyceps VIP, rounds off the release - driving Agman’s commanding vocal chant deeper into your brain, embedded on wave after wave of bassline pressure and rapid percussion.

Bournemouth-based beatmaker Vektah continues to make weighty waves at the forefront of the Soulvent roster in 2022. Since releasing his debut 4-track ‘Culture Shift’ EP in 2021, featuring the breakout hit ‘Request’, he has been featured on a number of Soulvent compilation projects.  These include multiple batches of ‘Tonics’ EPs and the stand-out ‘Soulvent Meets Hospital’ remix project, remixing the mighty Fred V while receiving the equivalent treatment from Whiney. This time around the budding producer has leveraged his network to invite a number of noteworthy collaborators to help him deliver yet another accomplished body of work in the form of the ‘Echo Mode’ EP. 

EP Title track ‘Echo Mode (feat. PAV4N & T-Man)’ opens with ominous hats and a high pitched synth. Manchester mic-wielder T-Man leaves you under no illusion over what is to come. This incredibly energetic track first drop sees PAV4N sit atop a surgically crafted jungle break, complete with a signature Vektah bassline.

‘Pocket Rocket’ lifts off with a spacey arpeggio before launching into hyperdrive at the drop - with a bassline to command the attention of almost any dancefloor. You would be forgiven for thinking that a phone is ringing at times during this track - it’s probably a friend wanting to tell you about Vektah’s new EP.

On the penultimate track, Vektah enlists the aid of the mighty Levela to deliver down-right dastardly basswork on ‘Lockdown the Streets’. Both producers’ influences are evident with a vocal sample reminiscent of Vektah’s ‘Every Time’ and a gutteral bassline akin to Levela’s ‘Gasp’, resulting in a track that could keep the streets empty for weeks.

Finally, the aptly-named ‘Spectral’ conjures all manner of mental images with its introspective intro. As each drop hits, Vektah leaves no stone unturned with the percussive elements of the track. The strange, swelling bassline provides the perfect counter-weight to the soaring synth lines.

Let this release reverberate around your collection, landing in all good stores on 2nd September.
