We are officially ten years old. Officially, because 2003 was the year of our first release: 'Silicon' on Nerve Recordings. It was written at Nik's parents' house in Donderen, Drenthe. A small village in a rural area (population: 300). Not exactly the typical breeding ground for futuristic drum&bass... We didn't know anyone who was into what we were into, not in Donderen, not at our school (those three odd guys with their headphones on all day listening to that crazy fast computer music), not in Groningen as a whole, and even in Holland there were only a few people pushing that sound that we were after. At that time, vinyl sales had started to decline, and the 'golden era' of dark/ tech/ futuristic d&b (whatever you want to call it) seemed to be over, while we were singularly about that sound. Not the best time and place for us to start you could say.

But being an island of three friends making music wasn't so bad. As a matter of fact they were amazing years. It's strange to think that we were so focused, in between all the hanging out, smoking weed, playing games and catching jokes we actually took a serious life-changing path without fully realizing it. When we decided we needed management in 2006, we hired another friend from high school, Walter - who had no training, just like us. We're pretty sure he didn't fully realise what he would get himself into!

And then there was the Internet. Through things like AOL Instant Messenger, the Dogs on Acid & Drum & Bass Arena forums (shouts to all the crew from back then!) we found a way to connect to a scene that was only beginning to discover the possibilities - and consequences - of being online. This internet world is how we got our music out there. It seems dead obvious now, but it really wasn't back then. We got our first exposure through a website called 'electronicscene.com': our track 'Drifter' was even featured on the homepage. Think Soundcloud but ten years ago (the domain name has since changed but there's still a demo up there from 2002... It's quite embarassing but here you go: artistserver.com/noisia). Anyway one thing led to another, we met dj Mayhem online, he signed us to Shadow-Law Recordings, helped us on our path, introduced us to people, we signed 'Silicon' to Paul Reset's Nerve Recordings, and then came our first real DJ gig abroad in Budapest in January 2004…

And now we are here - ten years of releases under our belt and a million followers on Soundcloud. Over the years we have met many incredible musicians, labels, deejays and industry people that we consider our friends and that have inspired us, helped us and taught us things. But in a way, we are still that island. Our crew has just grown, but we're still out in Groningen, with our own studios, our own management, our own music on our own labels, trying to do things in a way we think is good.

Having said all this retrospective old man shit, it's important to also mention that we don't feel 'arrived' or 'settled' in any way. It feels like we have only just begun. We're aching to write new music (new Noisia album dammit!). From windy and rainy Groningen: Thank you all for your amazing and enduring support over these last ten years. Here's to the future!

Turning up the heat even more, refining and distilling down his production technique and sound into something much more unique and hard hitting, whilst at the same time retaining his original liquid orientated soundscapes, Phase’s new EP combined aspects of rugged, low end experimentation with heady summer vibes. Combining emotional, organic instrumentation with a lovely selection of varied vocal performers – elements that lift the gifted producer out of strictly dancefloor territory into that of real musicianship and song writing – banging, uncluttered beats and downright dutty reese bass work, Phase’s music comes across as a bastard hybrid of epic proportions. 

Darkest of Minds closes off the original numbers on the EP with the most hard hitting of Phase’s tunes to date. Despite its initial liquid stylings, which sees a nice vocal sample proclaim that "Evil will sprout in my eyes when the darkest of minds arise" before the tune launches headfirst into Virus/Renegade Hardware-esq bassline banger territory, with evil, well-modulated reese bass work combining with MC Mota’s dread take on DnB toasting to sick effect.

15 Years of Technique – Summer Selection Album

It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

Earlier this year Desert Dwellers released their most diverse album in the duo's long career. The Great Mystery was the first full length collaborative project between the main founders Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe, and featured a wide range of styles and aesthetics from downtempo and psychedelic dub to tribal trance to exotic house and techno flavors.
To celebrate the special release, Desert Dwellers have curated an ambitious two-part remix album full of contributions from some of the brightest luminaries and rising talents across the underground electronic music landscape. We share a mutual love of dark, techy drum & bass, although we are involved with a range of other bass-led genres. We DJ and write music individually and together. We run the AutomAte family of digital labels, including AutomAte, AutomAte Deep and AutomAte Tech. AutomAte aims to bring you the best in edgy drum & bass, aimed square at the dancefloor, from rising stars to established artists, from chunky steppers to dark rollers and all manner of other fancy-ticklers. The parent label has already chalked up Radio 1 airplay from Friction, support from Drum & Bass Arena and has caught the attention of more DJs than you could shake a stick-insect at.

The Deep label aims to put the warmth back into drum & bass with a range of deep, eclectic, inspirational music, influenced by anything from the Far East to South America and everything in between. AutomAte Deep was launched in 2013 and has already picked up Radio 1 airplay from Nihal plus support from Raiden, EBK, Morphy, The Untouchables, Mental Forces, J Robinson, Ortokore, Philth, Stunna, Marukomu, Dexta & Mauoq (Diffrent Music).

The Tech label showcases a variety of gritty drum & bass music, from amen tracks and heavy-steppers to neuro and hardcore styles. We like it grimy with a slight attitude problem and an infectious groove.
