Lex Wolf - Lextended Vol.1

We continue the GF series this week with one of the pillars of the Dutch electro scene, none other than DJ Overdose. Hailing from The Hague and based in Rotterdam, his story starts in the eighties. His vision was to create a vibe “where the subs are devastating and the beats are raw". He underpins his work with booming Miami bass and draws on his love for 80s hip-hop to conjure up his signature style. He's etched his mark on deeply loved and respected labels such as L.I.E.S., Creme Organization, Bordello A Parigi, Pinkman, Viewlexx, Murder Capital, his own RotterHague, and many others. Famously dexterous in the booth, DJ Overdose has well-honed skills that make him able to tear up a larger stage or connect with a more intimate crowd. He graces this series with a two-and-a-half-hour live recording at the Down The Rabbit Hole festival. Lock in!'

Alex Albrecht returns with Aurora - a pristine followup to his Blue Caves transmission via Scissor and Thread in 2018. 

The Melbourne based composer and sound designer Albrecht has leans into his predilection for woozy, affecting melodies intertwined with skittering drums and snaking grooves, and Aurora brings that to the fore with six tracks of shimmering beauty. 

Spring Orchard opens the record, effortlessly merging deeply buried keys with washes of dreamlike synths, and dubby effects. 
Wildflower Walk is a melancholic affair, underpinned with a restless groove. 
The title track Aurora treads a similar path, but with a more driving approach, while an interplay between piano, guitar, and synths drenched in reverb offer a warm, enveloping atmosphere. 


Aurora is also shared here as a remix by Roza Terenzi, who entirely reworks the track with her signature club ready grooves . 

Kennett River exhibits a kind of smudged, cinematic hip hop feel, while closing track Morning Piazza showcases Albrecht’s sense of drama and pacing, producing a sublime ending to this deeply affecting collection.

Mar De Novo delivers another compelling record with their Daje EP; a six-track EP that effortlessly taps into the nostalgic pulse of Italo Disco while imbuing the label with what it is known for. As one of Vinyl Only's stable producers, Mar De Novo continue to carve a distinct niche with this release, combining warmth with a nuanced modernity. Spanning groovy, dancefloor-oriented moments and introspective - if a little twisted, and sometimes chilled in its vibe - Daje EP honours the enduring influence this sound has on the music scene, whilst pushing it forwards.

In this EP the analogue synths are quirky and playful, working atop a bed of funky, stuttering beats, with a real depth to the ideas in the arrangement - a characteristic Mar De Novo has mastered. The synths bubble up in unpredictable places, yet never feeling out of control. There is a really human edge to this record and that shows in the best way.

From the twisted funk workout of Instant Humidity and classic soulful vocal edge of Call Me, to the strobe-lit Italo arpeggios of Progression and plunging basslines and cosmic keys of Get A Way that add a layer of spacey psychedelia to the mix. This record is home to a panoply of related ideas. Often feeling like a call-back to the golden era of late '70s disco, but with enough modernity to make it so relevant to today's crate-diggers. Imagine, feel-good moments, both on and off the dancefloor.

Mar De Novo's ability to straddle the line between homage and innovation is the whole theme with their music. Blending vintage sound, equipment and influences with an artistic vision that's somehow retro yet very forward-facing. The appeal of this EP stretches beyond purists—there’s something for anyone with a head and appreciates soulful, analogue-driven music from the heart.

Metatone was founded in 1993 by Adkins himself together with Damon D’cruz who had by that time closed his previous label, Jack Trax. Over the next two years, Metatone released six 12” EP’s and a CD compilation until its abrupt end. The releases flew under the radar for many but were loved by those who were lucky enough to discover them. Today, the original pressings are a techno crate digger’s daydream.

Compiled from the original DAT tapes and remastered by Andreas “Lupo” Lubich at Calyx Mastering, “Electro Music Union, Sinoesin & Xonox Works 1993 - 1994” calls for J. M. Adkins’ music to be firmly placed among the defining classics of its time.

The Debut “Cobra EP” comes from a new production project “Mogambo” a collaborative brainchild of Sunju Hargun and multi-instrumentalist Jerom Doudet. Both located in Thailand and bounded by a shared love of acid electronica, Bollywood movies and big psychedelic gongs.

Delving deep into a highly personal and unique sound cosmos this album covers a wide range of sound textures. Featuring trippy jungle grooves, mesmerizing tribal percussion, countless eccentric effect pedals and hints to 90’s Goa. The EP ranges from spacey Asian soundscapes, sweaty basement afterhours journeys to slow burning hypnotizing grooves slithering as a Cobra.
