Tom Bruce has long kept his nose to the club grindstone. A Sydney stalwart, T.B has worked tirelessly in his efforts to further the harbour city’s dance landscape. From steering his own label ship Start Local Records, to releasing records via clipp.art and Paradiso plus delivering mixes for online radio shows such for Balamii and Area 3000, it’s fair to say Tom’s been putting in work! 

Until recently, Tom had called Nottingham UK home. Over two years, he soaked up all there was to learn about how those in the Northern hemisphere navigate the rave. Now, back on home soil, the dude is spilling over with creativity and vigour. Welcome to ‘Cloudy Days Often Have The Best Sunsets’.

This optimistically titled EP certainly lives up to its name, gliding along like a puck on ice. Straight out of the gate is ‘Faux Personality’, a jolly bongo number with acidic licks and 80’s synth play. If you’re looking to break the world record for the longest light jogging distance, throw this on repeat. In addition, Dutchman and label friend HATT.D lathers on more acid with a tidy remix.

Hot off their latest release with T. Jacques, London-based djs/party-turned label Tessellate show no signs of slowing down as they bring us the 'Drop Down' EP from Parisian dj and producer, Armless Kid. 

Marking their sixth release, Tessellate have by now established a very tight signature sound and vision for their label. Concentrating on club-readiness, Tessellate is shaping up to be first and foremost a dj’s label, concentrating on function over home-listening. However, this never goes far enough to reduce any of their output to “dj only” material, as their careful curation always has space for functional groovers with tuneful, harmonious elements and headier vibes.

Per usual, their sixth is full of all these signature ingredients. The A1 and original “Club Mix” of Drop Down provides the most tranquil listen of the bunch: a broken beat and flanged breaks set the scene, as catchy bursts of acid and synth lines reminiscent of old Project Pablo tunes ring out over the top. The B side features deeper and more minimal vibes across two more original cuts.
 
The A2 “Acid Reflex” flip of the leading track by Opal Sunn is our pick of the bunch. The Berlin duo (who’s latest release on Nick Hoeppner’s Touch From A Distance imprint is a must-listen) take the original up a notch, layering additional percussion over the original, replacing the smooth chords with rapid, sequenced synth work and finishing it off with a hefty touch of acid. Dreamy, dubby and sweet in patches, though techy and functional all the same, it all adds up to make a tune with Tessellate written all over it.

What’s special about Tessellate has been their ability to create a brand so in touch with all it’s built upon, a testament to their A&R. If you’ve ever seen Tessellate play or been to their parties, you’ll know what we mean (if you haven't, you should make it one of your post-quarantine plans). By now the Tessellate label has become all the right amount of predictable. The consistency is there, and you know what you’ll get with Tessellate, but it’s fresh every time and we definitely can’t wait for more.

PREMIERE: Armless Kid - Drop Down (Opal Sunn Acid Reflex)

Veteran Chicago House pioneer Boo Williams delivers stand out genre melding EP on Italian record label, NICEPEOPLE. The three track EP meanders through elements of house and techno with real depth. This is the “LOL” EP, landing January 2021 on vinyl, and you can happily say this one fully lives up to its expectations. 

The title track “LOL” chugs along with pure energy of sounds of the past, twisting beeps and bleeps whirring throughout. The shuffling drums make this one, brushing by as they continue to drive the opener. The clue is in the title here as Williams uses trippy samples of laughter which flash in and out throughout the duration. 

Next on the agenda is “Backwards Run”, a blissful deep and emotive encounter with Boo doing what he does best. Trickling synths and pads meander around a clean cut house arrangement, voices circle around the belly of the track making this another hypnotic outing. 

Elastic bass creates a sense of urgency in “Bangin Out”, the last of the EP which takes up the whole of the B-side. A real abrupt and direct track, the kind that leaves the crowd in a trance when utilised in the right moment, creating suspense in the club room before elevating to the next track. A tinge of acid and intelligent key arrangement enforcing more masterpiece material. 

This is Boo Williams at his finest once more, landing on a label that is not afraid to push a variety of sounds as long as the consistent quality is there. A real nod to sounds of the past, no egos in sight, just plain and simple effective dance floor sounds from one of the heroes of this vibe.
