As well-received as Audion's debut album—the sawed-off techno of Suckfish—was back in 2005, Matthew Dear's alter ego didn't assert its dominance until the following year. That's when Richie Hawtin slipped Audion's next single (the anthem-on-arrival that is "Mouth to Mouth") into the closing set of Detroit's Electronic Music Festival, pulling the pin on the weekend's most explosive moment and leaving everyone wondering what the hell just happened. 
Which was kinda the point. Dear wrote and recorded "Mouth to Mouth" right after a two-week tour of Europe, and in many ways, its hypnotic rhythms and signature bee swarm hook—cut in real time over the course of a couple restless hours—are meant to replicate the rush he felt in many overseas clubs.

"There was a great energy being shared by a lot of artists then," explains Dear. "I remember playing the song for a few people and it was clear something special was happening, something meditative in the simple repetition and slow build of it all."

The side-long single has stood the test of time, too, enough to warrant another look along the ambitious lines of Mouth to Mouth 10. The double pack reveals how one track can take on a life of its own in the hands of eight distinct producers, keeping its core intact without being afraid to manipulate the record's overall mood. So while Riva Starr's mischievous version sounds like it could be dropped in the middle of a sweaty Horse Meat Disco set, Dubfire lurks in the shadows, waiting to strike; and Dense & Pika crank up the chaos like a pressure cooker set to self-destruct.

"I asked everyone to treat their remix like a cover," explains Dear, "letting the theme guide them rather than the parts. Everyone put a piece of themselves into it, and I'll forever be grateful to them for contributing." 

He can also breathe a sigh of relief, for Mouth to Mouth 10 marks the end of Audion's first chapter and the beginning of what's to come with his long-awaited second LP this summer.

Sebastian Mullaert and Kontra-Musik have been involved in a love affair for quite some time – an affair that even resulted in an offspring called The Dance that came out on Kontra-Musik last year. Sebastian Mullaert is of course first of all known as half of Minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that Korg recently named a synthesizer after them. Lately, Sebastian has focused on his solo path under the Wa Wu We moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own Wa Wu We label, the cryptic S.E.L.F label and now on Kontra-Musik.

On the title track Travellers, Sebastian Mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven’t followed his move into Wa Wu We territory. You almost get the impression Sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90’s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil. The sharp edges are now covered in smooth moss and the soundscape is immensely deep and moist. But it’s still a vibrant and very much effective track. Above all, it has loads of free space to let the listeners make up their own journeys as travellers into the world of sound created by Mullaert.

We float, on the flip side, is a beautiful and meditative ambient piece. It’s also the fastest way for the urban dweller to find him or herself floating in a serene lake surrounded by strong, green trees instead of floating in a sea of stress and anxiety. A set of headphones and this new release from Kontra-Musik and you’re there.

Another one from Frankfurt based DJ/producer Mark Reeve on his SubVision imprint, which will be released on October, 31st. Usually rather known for getting rough, he now shows his deeper side and delivers a beautiful house tune.

The esteemed Will & Ink imprint hits the mini milestone of a tenth release by inviting old and new associates to remix some of the label’s still essential back catalogue. The results are as weird and wonderful as you would expect of a label that has always gone its own way.

First up is London producer Mosca, who remixes Yaleesa Hall x Malin’s ‘Second Lucas.’ The Not So Much label boss flips the track into something intense and brutal, with lashings of frazzled industrial synth sounds whipping about above pinging and high impact drums. Italian Chevel—an associate of labels like Stroboscopic Artefacts—then transforms ‘Third Lucas’ into five minutes of otherworldly machine made oddness. Ambient synths are stretched, skewed and filtered, rough textures brush up with the occasional kick sound and the whole thing is gloopy and utterly unique as it suspends you in sound. Then comes Livity Sound star Asusu with a typically hi fidelity re-work of ‘Second Carol.’ Dubby and loopy, metallic and clean, it is a pristine track to get dance floors locked to a groove. Last of all a Stripped mix of ‘First Carol’ mixes minimal dub with freaky sound design and the result is an earworm of a tune that burrows deep into your brain.

Now one of dance music’s most respected DJs, Avalon Emerson first made a name for herself in the storied warehouse scene of her birthplace, San Francisco, before relocating to Berlin in 2013. Over a decade of performances at the famed Berghain led to appearances at numerous festivals around the world which all cemented Emerson, and her evocative, genre- and decade-spanning sets, as perennially in demand. 

In 2020, she released her first full-length collection: a contribution to the longrunning DJ-Kicks series (which Resident Advisor described as “The sound of a well-honed DJ at the top of her game.”), nestled alongside a steady stream of remix releases for the likes of Four Tet, Slowdive, Robyn and more.

Next up was 2023’s Avalon Emerson & The Charm, an instant classic which saw Emerson exploring her singing voice and more traditional songwriting outside of the boundaries of her dance music work.  Created after a move to New York, the resulting & The Charm album was released to critical acclaim, landing on numerous critics’ best-of-the-year lists.

The stage is now set, then, for her to carve out a wholly unique path, and with the help of new label home and indie giant, Dead Oceans, Emerson is poised to connect her various musical endeavors to create an untouchably rich output of material. First up is Perpetual Emotion Machine, consisting of songs created for her DJ sets, delivered via a living, evolving project and announced ahead of her worldwide tour.
