The first single from his upcoming first full-length recording "booker t. soltreyne: a race rekkid," the song "cochise" revisits the friendship between the movie’s two main characters Leroy “Preach” Jackson and Robert “Cochise” Morris.  Reminiscent of the classic Motown sound, "cochise" is armed with a thumping bass-line, chilling tambourine and a Pips-styled hook that implicates society as a whole for the senseless murder that climaxes the movie.  Combined with avery’s soulful vocal performance, "cochise" will re-introduce its listeners to authentic soul singing and the biting poetry of the Black Arts Movement.  One may believe that both "cochise" the song and avery’s voice are relics found in a time capsule from the 1970’s, but soon both his voice and the song aides its story in being a poignant commentary on the current violence rippling through many urban communities.

In April of 1968, an uprising lit up the West Side of Chicago in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Black Chicago had a special connection to the civil rights leader: Dr. King lived on the West Side in 1966, fighting along with the Chicago Freedom Movement for open housing.
Reclaimed Soul host Ayana Contreras takes us back to April of 1968, when a few Black Chicagoans turned on tape recorders, laying their grief down in song.
