This week, B-Side Stories host Rachel Liao caught up with Pōneke-based multidisciplinary artist Min-Young Her about her latest show “Misaeng” on at Play_station artist run space, her background and interest in the arts, and how she is settling into the windy city!

Dylan Horrocks and Zach Dodson have created a university programme that their younger selves dreamed about. They are co-founders of The Visual Narrative Lab: a place for visualisers and world-builders of all sorts to explore storytelling across media ranging from comics to creative writing to tabletop roleplaying.

Dylan, author of the acclaimed graphic novel Hicksville, and an Aotearoa Arts Laureate, has worked as a cartoonist, writer, and illustrator for over 35 years, and is renowned for his world-building, storytelling, and scholarship. Zach creates interactive narratives across various media, including the "illuminated novel" Bats of the Republic. He is also the founder of a publishing company, Featherproof Books, and a video game studio, Interactive Tragedy LTD.

Laura spoke to Dr Mike Joy, an environmental scientist, and researcher and lecturer at Victoria University. He’s been working for 20 years on the on understanding the freshwater crisis in Aotearoa, and on the public policies needed to resolve environmental issues. We spoke about his background and early work, and about an old sailboat called Medina that keeps him sane.

Urban Habitat Collective are a diverse group of Wellingtonians working to collectively design and build a medium-density, stacked neighbourhood. Collective members Bronwen Newton and Lew Skinner talked to Sadie Coe about their vision of social living and a sharing of skills and resources in an urban community.

Rachel Benefield is a mum committed to going plastic free! Laurie and Laura spoke to Rachel about how her family reduced their plastic waste, and how the experience inspired her speak-up and lead Plastic Free Kāpiti, a community group on Facebook to help other folks on the same journey!

Vanessa Stacey talks to Sadie Coe about her dedication to the performing arts and to helping others into the industry. Vanessa began acting on the big screen at the age of seven, and since then has worked around New Zealand and the world acting, directing, and singing with various bands, as well as working as a publicist and tour manager for acts such as Fat Freddy's Drop. She also shares one of her latest songs live in the studio.

Laura and Perrine are learning all about The Share Shack in Aro Valley with Taya, the community fridge coordinator. It's a place for people to share things they aren't using any more, or find some food or clothing they can use, all for free! Run by volunteers and donations, it's reducing waste and sharing with our neighbors. Find them on Facebook, or in real life reality right next to the Aro Valley Community Centre.
