In Harmonie Universelle, Marin Mersenne writes the following about the viol:

"If one were to judge musical instruments according to their ability to imitate the human voice, and if one were to esteem naturalness as the highest accomplishment, so I believe that one cannot deny the viol the first prize, because it can imitate the human voice in all its modulations, even in its most intimate nuances..."

Indeed, there used to be a tradition of viol writing that particularly underlined the instrument’s perceived likeness to the human voice, among which a popular work being Marin Marais’s Les Voix Humaines. My piece Human Voices (2022), dedicated to the gamba quartet Science Ficta, is meant as a present-day response to this humanistic endeavor.

Acting as a 21st century counterpart to Marais’s Les Voix Humaines, Human Voices aims to question what “naturalness” might encompass in regard to the human voice. In order to liken the ensemble’s sound to the human voice, I 3D printed six human vocal tract models that are each tuned to a different vowel shape (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/, /ə/)[1], and amplified the gamba quartet through these tubes. Therefore, the quartet’s acoustic sound would be physically filtered through these models, imbuing the live performance with a vocal quality.

I did not conceive Human Voices as a singing machine; but rather as a musical experiment in which the listener is continuously invited to ask: “Did I just hear a voice in there?” The music is ultimately intended to function from within the realm of the uncanny, from a liminal zone that borders the human and non-human, or the so-called natural and unnatural. The sudden occurrences of the human sonic image therefore behave as brief transgressions that disturb this distinction. The human voice, a feature that is regarded to be unique to us, becomes reduced to a material construct, thus emphasizing our own material nature in return.

Human Voices (2022) for amplified viol quartet

“Era una fría mañana de Junio, me encuentro en el parque del centenario, un parque urbano en el plano de Arica, realizando grabaciones de campo para el proyecto “Mapa Sonoro de Arica y Parinacota”, en ese horario se pueden escuchar diversas especies, como Chincoles (Zonotrichia capensis), Picaflores del Norte (rhodopis vesper), Águilas (Generanoaetus melanolecus),  Cernícalos (Falco tinnunculus), Paloma común (Columba livia), Tórtolas Quiguagua (columbina cruziana), entre otras especies. por suerte la costanera que bordea el parque tenía muy poco movimiento y todavía no llegaban las familias, ya que era un domingo de día. Así  que arme el equipo y puse a grabar al micrófono zoom H3vr que realiza grabaciones ambisonic (esfera 360°) y en ese lapso de tiempo de grabación , volaban alrededor entre el follaje de los árboles una colonia de tórtolas.
En la grabación se pueden escuchar tres tipos de vocalizaciones, llamados generales, llamado de atención y vocalización de enfrentamiento entre machos. La vocalización de las tórtolas es muy interesante ya que las personas que no conocen la especie creen que es una “pequeña rana croando”. Mientras grabo el audio solo me queda sentarme, respirar hondo y disfrutar del ambiente."

Comienza en el área de sonido el 2016, y el 2020 crea el proyecto de Mapa Sonoro, el año 2021 participa en las transmisiones de Tsonami Radio (Chile), en el 2022 participa en el Festival Sur Aural (Bolivia) y Festival Asimtria (Perú). Actualmente sigue con nuevas fases del mapa sonoro y comienza como investigador sonoro.

It's a journal she kept on the 3,500 mile, six-month journey she made by bicycle from her home in Lismore, Ireland to Delhi in India in 1963, Ireland, traversing Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan on her trusty bike, Ros.  Joining us to discuss the book are Felicity Cloake, food writer and the award-winning author of the Guardian’s long-running ‘How to Make the Perfect’ series and Caroline Eden, author and journalist, whose latest book, Red Sands is a reimagining of traditional travel writing using food as the jumping-off point to explore Central Asia.

During the first week of September 2023 I returned to Palupohja in the Alam Pedja reserve in Estonia for a short break before the autumn really begins and the days become short and cold.  Early in 2020 I was booked to go but then Covid struck and I had to cancel the trip.  It was good to meet up again with fellow wildlife sound recordists Andrus Kannel and Veljo Runnel and also Robert who runs the place.  I was booked-in for only a few days so I didn't want to be weighed-down with equipment so I brought only the Sound Devices - MixPre3 and the Tascam X8 recorders and a pair of Lewitt 440 and a pair of Primo EM272 microphones. 

A few years ago I was there in August from about the 8th to the 14th, I recorded mainly cricket choruses in the evenings and early nights, I recorded also in the early mornings but didn't get many recordings, at least not enough similar recordings to make any new production.  Very diverse recordings are hard to put together in a way that would sound like they were all made at the same time of day.  This trip however, though I only got about six hours of recordings, they are very alike and when I got home I was pleasantly surprised what I was able to make of them, the quiet background in each made it easy to cross-fade from one recording to the next.  I would like to thank Andrus for the lift out to the reserve from Tartu and his help with the name for this production.  Hilissuvi is an Estonian word that basically means the time of year that is the late summer and also the early autumn.  There is no English word for it. 

For the moment I will leave it as a free download but when I  put it on my Bandcamp page I will have to uncheck the free download box.

Night Listening means sitting, through the night, in a chosen location, as still and quiet as possible, often for many hours, absorbed in purely listening, while recording. This is an excerpt from a recent Night Listening. It involves three Brushtail Possums, and one Red Fox. The responses of the Possums to the barking of the Fox are very interesting. (Don't start with the volume raised to more than 50 to 60 per cent: some of the fox barks are quite close and loud.)

Recorded on the land of the Kaurna people.
