Back in 2008, Kommi Torpela acquired his first set of turntables and started spinning hardcore, drum & bass and techno records. Under a different moniker, he performed in various underground parties in Finland.

Some years later, "DJ Kommi Torpela" started off as a not-so-serious side project. It served as an outlet for his 80's and 90's music dj sets, mainly focusing on Italo Disco and Italo House. Further down the line, his interest over genres like Italo Disco, New Beat and EBM grew stronger. As modern productions started to emerge as Indie Dance and Dark Disco, "DJ Kommi Torpela" would then become his main alias.

In his dj sets, he likes to combine new with old, keep things interesting and surprising, and have a right balance between seriousness and playfulness. 

"The Universal Beats guest mix is showcasing my vision of darker side of Italo Disco, what I consider being my main style. It contains a fair amount of my all-time and recent favourites."

Guest Mix: Dj Kommi Torpela "ITALO ENIGMA"

Regular's Series kicks off with a mix from one of our dearest customers, Anton Earman.

Anton Earman, a DJ and avid vinyl collector, discovered his passion for Electro music after getting acquainted with Dutch electro when visiting Rotterdam in 2006. His musical journey began in the early 2000s, and his dedication to the Electro  has only grown since. In Munich he continued to pursue his architectural career while nurturing his lifelong hobby of collecting Electro and playing at various venues around the city. 

"For my mix, I have put up a set of modern electro tunes from records purchased at deejay. I get tired of mainstream, so discovering new tunes in my own collection is a perfect escape. This set is one of those trips. Modern Electro is in my opinion the purest musical art form able to represent anything real or unreal. It gives infinite space to our imagination and emotions. I would like to encourage everyone to follow and support electro artists as they push the boundaries of electronic music."

With output on Ubiquity, Wonderwheel and Razor-N-Tape, London’s Tigerbalm has truly come into her own production voice recently, bringing forth a colourful vision of tropical influences filtered through modern club sounds. With the ‘Profunda Alma EP’, the Tiger focuses her attention on Brazil, coaxing out two gorgeous original songs that pay homage to the sizable impact the country has had on her musical sensibilities.

‘Profunda Alma’ features the vocalist Joy Tyson (who appeared on Tigerbalm’s earlier Nina EP) and creates an atmosphere of deep emotional mystique through driving percussion, an insistent bassline and dramatic guitar stabs. ‘Vem Cá’ goes for a more bouncy retro samba vibe and features the incredible vocals of João Selva, who delivers a hook that feels almost canonical, as if we’ve known it forever. Ever consistent French producer Yuksek takes ‘Vem Cá’straight to the club with his remix, and London upstarts Make-A-Dance deliver two trippy dancefloor takes on the title track to make this record a powerful 5-tracker!
