Love Injection is a New York music and culture monthly fanzine in print since February 2015, founded by DJs, archivists, and audio enthusiasts Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch. Their namesake record label launched in 2020. Avid record and audio enthusiasts, Paul is also an art director and Barbie writes and performs music with various projects.

Darker Than Wax FM with Marco Weibel @ The Lot Radio 02-10-2024

Contrary to what the title of this mix suggests, there is not a Sade track in sight, (sorry to disappoint any of you ;) ) I chose the title because it perfectly communicates why and for whom i made this: the anti-Valentine heroes, heroines and gentlethems among us. It is a companion for quiet reflections on love of many kinds. It is separate from any binaries, stereotypes, and of course the looming shadow of the patriarchy that is ever present - especially around a commercial holiday such as Valentine's Day.
   Even though the creation of this holiday and its perpetuation in the media + commerce is problematic in so many ways, as a dj it is my favorite holiday by far - the one that gets me the most inspired to create and share music. My primary currency as a person and artist is emotion - so this is THE time of year that triggers, cuts and sings to me the hardest, deepest, loudest.
   As well as providing an anti-Valentine's companion for the season, this particular selection of tracks exemplifies all of the music I lean on and enjoy when i'm not prepping for a dancefloor-oriented gig: soothing, gentle, filled with caring + positive messages, atmospheric, abstract. Allowing the mind to rest and to wander.
   The final track of this mix is especially important to me - one of my favorite single releases from last year by my friend Niia. Her voice is liquid gold; her songwriting is perfectly human and direct. I listen to idk what to tell my friends every time i take off or land in an airplane, and I have been doing a LOT of traveling recently. The rest of 2024 will be more of the same.
   I'm known for spinning vinyl, but all of the tracks featured in this mix came to me through digital means. Yes, we all hate that streaming-service-that-shall-not-be-named, but we love discovering great new music too. I've trained the algorithm to bring up the most random and obscure shit to me on a regular basis - and of course it still feeds me all the neo soul and b-side grooves that i am a sucker for.
      I hope you all enjoy this mix, and that it serves as a lover to you this season. If you like what you hear, please support the artists featured via their bandcamps wherever possible.
