Hello and welcome back to Hidden Garden Radio! 

For episode 26 we have the pleasure of hosting a true fan of our radio show since the start, Ryan James Quinn. Ryan has been Djing since the early 2000s and that fact well represented in his musical repertoire. Expect a beautiful collection of downtempo, melodic and organic house, but laced with subtle nuances of early rave synths and ear catching vocals.

Ryan recently moved to Portland, Maine and marks our first US based artist on our show.

There’s no gimmick with Daniel Avery, no hook. He is, as his Discogs page puts it, a “DJ and producer from England.”

And really, that should be the only hook you need. Since focusing on making music under his real name in the early ’10s (though he was DJing and producing for several years before then), the one-time studio assistant of Andrew Weatherall has been steadily developing from record to record, combining house and techno structures with dynamics that betray his love of oddball guitar music and ’90s alt-rock. Like Weatherall, and like Downwards’ Regis, Avery recognises the limitless potential to hypnotise by getting as weird as possible over a 4×4 pulse, and on his debut album Drone Logic (the clue’s in the name), he uses 4×4 as a canvas to paint Bosch-esque visions of disembodied voices, tripped-out rabbit-holes and more.

Of course, it also bangs when it has to –  Avery’s no floor-clearer. In fact, he’s become one of the UK’s most celebrated DJs of recent years, contributing to the BBC Essential Mix series and releasing a mix CD for Fabric. Avery’s FACT mix – no tracklist, spotters – comes on the eve of a new residency for Fabric, Divided Love. The first Divided Love takes place on August 15, and features sets from hallowed electro unit Dopplereffekt, Helena Hauff and Factory Floor, Volte-Face and Avery himself.

“The club has been with me from the beginning so starting my own night there feels genuinely exciting”, explains Avery. “Divided Love will be about presenting acts who are doing something special… sonic souls, faith affirmers, music for the mind.”

Steve Cass & Justin Wilson met at high school in the late 80's and began listening to each other's music collections  whilst bunking school. Their taste spanned everything from Simple Minds to The Egyptian Lover but they really started getting serious about their music after hearing cassette tapes that were going around their local town and in particular a DJ from Windsor called Richard Bell who happened to be living with some older friends who had travelled South really caught their attention.

They started collecting the records they were hearing on the mix tapes and clubs and over the years spent a fortune mail ordering records from London's Flying, Fat Cat & Tag records, Frankfurt's Delirium and Glasgow's Bomba records and are still in touch today with some of the guys who worked or owned these shops.

As the record collections grew they wanted to share the sounds with friends so fast forward to May 1995 when they opened the doors to the first ever NSA night in the basement of a local football club.

The night was a huge success and quickly evolved into a fortnightly party which was when the journey began.  In between the NSA parties they frequented Edinburgh's Pure at the venue where NSA went on to relocate and SLAM that happened on a Friday at the Arches in Glasgow hosted by Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle who go by the same name and have played with the guys on a good few occasions.
The foundations of all these nights depended on the residents who knew how to set the scene and NSA offered the same opportunity for Steve & Justin to hone their skills in the art of the warmup as well as playing longer sets as they rotated between resident only parties and the guest DJs they would ask along to the club.

Track selection was the key thing for them and is still very evident in their sets to this day as they opt out of playing the latest big records and try to select music that will stand the test of time or has a bit more depth to it.  This is a far cry from a lot of clubs you go to these days with the music being banged out as soon as the doors open with little thought going into it. 
The same ethos is applied to the careful selection of the guests they would ask to play and the night must also have had an impact on them as leading names on the circuit return time and time again as well as contribute to their recent soundcloud series that was launched last year. www.soundcloud.com/nsaofficial
Andrew Weatherall is one DJ who has been regularly playing at NSA for over 15 years now after guesting at their 5th birthday party back in 2000. He described it as "a proper acid house party" after his recent appearance with Sean Johnston. SLAM are another example of world class DJs who return to play with Steve & Justin in the small basement which is worlds apart from the huge events they play week in week out.

These decisions are rewarded as the NSA parties always fill up and get going early rather than people just turning up for the main guest. It has also resulted in a loyal crowd that spans a couple of generations and is still supported by people who came along to the early parties as well as new people discovering it all the time. The people make  NSA and it has one of the friendliest crowds who really know there music and has been the birth place to a lot of great friendships.

This month's edition of Hostage Radio is an extremely personal one for both of us and we couldn't be prouder. As an artist, he's always been and continues to be a huge influence on us. He was one of the first international DJ's that Pyz ever booked for an event he was running at the time, 'Access' in Edinburgh.  Some of the very first records Wil-tron​ ever bought were the collaborations with Miss Kittin​ on International Deejay Gigolo Records​. 

His uncompromising and unique blend of electro, EBM & techno consistently sets dance floors on fire and from his early release to his new works under the name Amato Michel’s mastery of synth always resonates with us. Ladies and gentlemen, we're both humbled and honoured to present THE HACKER​!

Alfresco has been going a number of years now, originating in Blackpool as an all dayer before slowly evolving into a weekend long festival for the discerning acid house fan.  
This year, based in Tonbridge Wells and with DJ Harvey, Tim Sweeney & Man Power as well as Hercules & Love Affair, Optimo, Rebolledo and Manfredas among the headliners, the festival has gone from strength to strength.  
44100Hz Social Club will be representing on the Sounds of Silver Stage with MAN2.0 opening proceedings for Jonah Considine, Tronik Youth and Curses on the friday 25th, here is a taste of some of the things you might expect to hear over the weekend should you decide to head down to Hop Farm between the 25th & 27th of May.
