Mix of the Week #542: Burnout Sumner - Balearic Boogie Nights

In July 2010, I got an invitation to play at a small but neat festival named Folk Ibiza. It was my first visit to the island. I got to spin at a bunch of different locations, such as the Hostal Boutique Salinas, Sunset Ashram, and on the terrace at Space. I returned in September of the following year to play a set on Andy Wilson's show on Ibiza Sonica and a second time at the Hostal. I have not been back to Ibiza since. I recently came across this picture (taken at Cala Compte next to Sunset Ashram), which inspired me to make this mix. I tried to sonically capture the vibe that I felt back then. It includes some bona fide classics such as Ashra "Oasis“, Santana "Aqua Marine," and Jah Wobble & Holger Czukay "Hold On To Your Dreams," as well as tunes by Smith & Mudd, Begin, Quiet Village and more. A Magnificent Time [Mix/July 2024]

Idle Cellars is back & our latest mix is from the Bay Area’s Dub Disco Dons 40 Thieves! Our hometown heroes are faves of Harvey and Weatherall alike, with releases for labels like Rong Music & Permanent Vacation, including their massive hit covering Hot Chocolate’s “Don’t Turn It Off”! Well-known for having a sporadic release schedule, our Thieves landed at Leng Records for the past decade or so and we can expect some new music from the boys coming soon!

For this mix they’ve pulled out all the stops for a tour-de-force of all the delectable things that makes a Thief a Thief - stripped-down Paradise Garage-brand disco and boogie jams, secret Italo groovers, chuggy slo-mo bangers and more, viewed through the hazy lens of Dub - always a smokers’ delight!
