When younger, I often was annoyed with classical music. It felt you needed to know enough names and eras in order to enjoy or appreciate it. All I knew was that classical music never clicked with me until I heard Erik Satie for the first time.

There was something about the emptiness in the work that drew my attention. My entry point were the “interpretations” by Dutch conductor Reinbert de Leeuw. In an informal interview Reinbert shows his profound fascination for Satie and discloses the context in which Satie operated. The more famous pieces (like Gymnopédie or Gnossiennes) read “très lent”, which translate to “very slow”. Against a backdrop of predominantly frivolous, complex and upbeat music around that time, Satie treats his contemporaries almost as non-existent. He creates extremely slow and (almost) boringly-repetitive music. Reinbert subserviently follows this intention to play Satie’s music “très lent” and brings forth a type of music that almost falls apart as it is almost more empty than filled and more still than moving.

Over the past four years I’ve been slowly collecting music that is circumstantial to Satie. Music that is an interpretation of his many pieces.  Music that is a dedication to be “très lent”. Music that is characterised by playfulness and repetitiveness in sound and form. Music that serenades to Satie’s classics. Make music like the others don’t exist.

Ce mois-ci on est vraiment très content d’accueillir le premier show radio solo de Kmithre. Cela fait maintenant 1 an qu’elle à rejoint notre petite organisation et qu’elle nous entaille de bonne humeur ! Chanteuse depuis plusieurs années, voila quelque mois qu’elle navigue derrière les platines pour notre plus grand plaisir, un regard toujours aiguisé et curieux à travers lequel elle nous livre ce mix. Un très beaux mélange de folk, rock et post punk acidulé au bordures obscures. Pleins de projets sous les coudes vous en entendrez bientôt…
