Christopher R.E. Filancia Andersen was born in Gentofte, Denmark in 1990. He is a drummer who started out by taking percussion lessons, learning how to play the congas and bongos and various Afro-Cuban rhythms before later moving to the drum set. It started with playing along to a lot of records he had in his home such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones and James Brown.

He became serious about drumming during high school; he took music at the highest possible level and performed in the school’s musical for three years, playing drum set and percussion. The music was a diverse mix of rock and Broadway music, such as Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Wicked, Rent and the movie Across the Universe.

After a few years of playing, he heard about Berklee for the first time and started looking into what courses the college offered. In 2009, before his final year of high school, he attended Berklee’s five-week summer performance program in Boston, which got him thinking about studying music. It was a big step for him to go to the five-week and an honor to be accepted; he studied with Sergio Bellotti, Alberto Netto, Corinne Chase and Mark Kohler.

Chris always had a love for jazz, especially Miles Davis and John Coltrane, but had not yet learned about jazz drumming and vocabulary. But in 2011, he was accepted to the Newpark Music Centre, a Berklee International Network School in Dublin, Ireland. He attended classes at Newpark for two years for Berklee credit, digging deeper into jazz music by taking ensembles focusing on different periods of jazz such as Hard Bop, early Miles Davis and modal jazz. He attended masterclasses with Dave Liebman, Joshua Redman trio and Kenny Werner during his time there. During his two years in Ireland, he attended the 2012 Berklee Umbria Jazz clinics, where he studied under Dino Govoni, Fernando Huergo, and Ron Savage.

In the Fall of 2013, Chris began his studies at Berklee as a performance major and drum set principal. Over the years he has studied with greats such as Sergio Bellotti, Bob Gullotti, Terri Lyne Carrington, Neal Smith, Billy Kilson, Jon Hazilla, Ed Saindon, Carlos Ezequiel, and Lee Pearson II. He graduated in May 2016 with a degree in Music Performance. 

He has performed in Copenhagen, Dublin, Boston and New York. Highlights include performing for the US Ambassador Rufus Gifford for his Independence Day party in 2016 and for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Copenhagen Jazz Festival, with constellations he created. It is his plan to bring more outstanding musicians to Denmark.

Aside from music, Christopher has a huge passion for running and has run many full 26-mile marathons. His dream is to complete all the World Marathon majors; so far, he has completed Berlin, Chicago, London, Boston (twice) and New York, as well as many non-major marathons. The only one missing is Tokyo. Among his greatest marathon memories are being in New York when the marathon was cancelled in 2012; instead, he, his dad, and the group New York Runners in Support of Staten Island brought aid to Staten Island residents whose homes were ruined after Hurricane Sandy. Another great memory was raising $2420 for Technology for Autism Now, a group in whose honor he ran the Boston Marathon. He held a fundraiser before the marathon at Boston’s Lansdowne Pub, where he arranged for Berklee musicians such as Arreanna Jaye, Steffi Jeraldo, The Rivas Trio, and The Side One Trio to perform.
