You Take Me High

I am an Italian-American singer and musician, born in Rome, where I live. I have been lead singer in various bands in the U.S. and Italy since 1986. In my life, I divide my time between my passion for music and creative work as new media designer. For the last two years I’ve been writing songs as an independent artist, and have been exploiting the potential of the Web to promote my music. 

How do I shape my songs? It depends: it can start from music or words. I’m often humming new melodies, chords, rhythm tracks, and usually catch them with my cell phone, wherever I am.  Once, I happened to record a melody during a serious business meeting by pretending to answer a call!  Sometimes, I start with a concept that fascinates me in particular: a story I read in a magazine, a picture, conversations overheard in the subway, a memory from my life, emotions related to a period I want to paint indelibly... in this case I try to visualize the concept and turn it into an emotional snapshot, which then I describe tying together the most evocative words. I like to feel the song and then to structure the harmony and the melody based on what I want to express.
What is my genre of music? It should be the consequence of the lyric and not vice versa. Sometimes, however, I like to play with contrast - a dramatic theme may have an unlikely light sound. I believe that music is beautiful in all its forms; 7 notes that combined together express your mood, what you see, what you feel. For me music springs from the soul. These days I've been working on a song, “Invisible Cages”, which speaks about violence against women and how difficult is to take control and walk away. The track has bossa jazz style and although it sounds like a love song, it deals with the traps of love.

My musical influence ranges from jazz to pop to rock to dance to R & B. I really like wide, evocative music, like U2 songs that takes you far away with the combination of a few apparently simple but rather powerful chords. I like the atmosphere that jazz can create. For example, standards such as Moody's “Mood for Love” reinterpreted by great artists like George Benson.

The ability to sound universal notes is what I look for in a song, the thrill. There are songs you can hear a thousand times but always make you feel a shiver down your spine, a sort of primal emotion. 
“You Take Me High” is a song about someone who makes me feel like I fly above the daily routine, lets me live "free like the wind”. When two people love each other, their spirits rise a step higher than they would individually. For me this is love, and I hope to be able to describe this feeling in a song.
