For the 18th edition of our mix series we are joined by a revered breakthrough of recent years, @ciel_dj.

A key figure on and off the dancefloor, Toronto-based Ciel has been an ever growing force on the electronic scene. Spearheading the female focused Work In Progress collective and co-founding the touted Parallel Minds imprint, she has helped bring diversity, safety and representation into the clubs whilst also working with advocacy groups to change the city’s laws to be more favourable towards creative ventures. Pushing a distinctive sound that is characterised by a club-focused blend of deep and energetic contrasts, she showcases why she is one to watch with a standout mix for the Junction 2 series.

Here is what Ciel had to say about the mix:

“This mix was inspired by 1) clubs reopening 2) my love of cheesy tech house wafters and 3) a desire to present the most authentic version of myself as a DJ. I think most Djs have very complicated feelings about making mixes, the process of premeditating a mix at home away from an audience and the insatiable drive for perfection can both be very anxiety-inducing. So I chose to do as little planning as possible, seeking instead a truly spontaneous recording experience with zero plan and nothing more than 2 USBs full of bangers. The result is a high energy 90-minute trip into trancey house, techy rollers, dub techno, and minimal-UKG tools. Play this on your way back to the club.”

Junction 2 Mix Series 018 - Ciel

Toronto's efemmera (@efemmera) closed out the very first year of Daisychain in 2018 (#051) with a mix dedicated to the 1993 rave era. She's back again with a fizzy mix for the Daisychain residency on Berlin's Refuge Worldwide 📡🌐🌼

efemmera is 1/3 of Toronto-based dance music collective @oepresents with Ceremonies and Kehdo. She began deejaying and throwing parties as a way of bringing together her friends, both irl and Dancing is merely a small part of her endless dedication for fun and Having a Good Time. While On Earth is currently offline, they can be found on the radio waves monthly on  Lisbon's Radio Quantica and occasionally, at @invisible-city-radio.

efemmera shares a bit about this mix: "I've been thinking a lot about this feeling of 'nostalgiacore. just like many others, I found myself returning to songs I listened to 5-10 years ago for both comfort and pleasure's sake Think lots of indie dance, music that toes the line between cheesy, neon, and what feels good, etc, which i realize share a lot of common elements with genres and sounds I love and gravitate towards to: lush bass, 90s trance, new beat, weirdo synths, pop-centric electronica, etc. I think a part of me is thinking about an idealized version of Ibiza where it's just my friends and I playing music for each other and having fun <3  ~

"When I first started djing I was into heavy industrial Techno music… During the years I moved more into the direction of House and the Techno records I used to play are beginning to get dusty now. At the moment I try to refresh my keyboard skills. I recently got myself a new toy – a Fender Rhodes stage piano and a Yamaha SK-20. So I’m occupied trying out some new stuff with that now. Besides that I enjoy playing around with RnB acapellas with different beats at the moment."

ZENA MIXSERIES NO. 60 – Marie Lung

For the 103rd entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome  Seattle-based DJ, @tiffwanee (she/they)! Tiffany has a few words about the incredible mix she's put together for us, 'When I was working on this mix, I thought about a trippy but also euphoric set I would play for my friends at a forest rave. In Seattle, summer is the most beautiful time of year. It’s also when everyone gets excited about throwing outdoor parties.

Lately I’ve been drawn to a lot of more bass-driven and polyrhythmic tracks, so I explored that part of my sound with this mix.'

River Yarra Mix N°52

American Kareem Ali (@kmx19) came to dance music late but has very quickly made a big impression. The formally trained trumpeter has a fascination with the cosmos that colours all his music. Over nearly 50 releases he has proven himself adept at making everything from sleek electro to deep house, driving techno to cinematic ambient. The breakout producer also runs his own CosmoFlux label which he hopes will one day become a non-profit that hosts day parties aimed towards young people of colour. 

In the mix for us this week, he laces together a smooth and seductive set of richly musical house grooves. It is songs that he is playing mostly, with proper chords and gorgeous vocals that always enrich the soul. Ali is a devout man who is averse to dance music's tendency towards hedonism, but his selections here truly uplift. There is a spiritual aspect to what he does that warms the heart and brings joy in a different sort of way.
