SUMMER IN HELSINKI

Went to the website of the Sri Lankan office of statistics, and took the first three numbers off the scrolling window--86, 68, 120--to give me the three tracks.

Panned them left, center, right for a bit of separation.

listened a few times and jotted down a few places where things seemed to synch up a bit, then cut out those bits. 

Stuck them into clips--making some "piano" (boosted mids, reverb) "bass" (dropped by 1 octave) and "sax" (up an octave, reverb). 

Then added three sets of percussion clips--jazz, African, Latin.

I had slots left over so I filled them with blanks and set all the clips to trigger each other at random. After listening to a bunch of random generations, I picked one clip to start and one to end, then let it rip!

Featuring a pre-recorded double bass track by Adriano Orrù, the piece blurs the boundaries between acoustic and electronic sound, performer and narrative. Wilson Poffenberger delivers a profoundly nuanced performance, animating this complex and emotionally resonant work with exceptional depth and precision. He engages in a dynamic dialogue with the electronic elements—sounds that originate from his own instrumental gestures—at times echoing them with a subtle delay, at others anticipating sonic events yet to unfold. This interplay cultivates a sense of ambiguity between the live and the pre-recorded, dissolving temporal clarity and enveloping the listener in a dreamlike atmosphere. Within this meticulously crafted sonic architecture, the audience is drawn into a space where perception wavers, and presence becomes fluid.

This work offers a musical interpretation of the creation of the world, inspired by the biblical narrative. It explores the opposing forces that shape existence, dramatically expressed through the saxophone’s dual modes of performance. The piece begins with a biblical passage where God breathes life into man—this moment is sonically marked by the audible breath. From there, the alternating calm and chaotic sections reflect the ongoing tension between harmony and discord, evoking the complexities at the heart of human and cosmic experience.

The work had its world premiere at the XVIII World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia, on July 11, 2018, and quickly gained international recognition. The U.S. premiere followed at EMS60, celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios, on November 17, 2018. Subsequent performances included the International Saxophone Symposium at George Mason University (January 13, 2019) and the SPLICE Festival at Western Michigan University (June 29, 2019).

Barry Prophet is a composer, percussionist, installation artist and sculptor whose music has appeared in galleries and theatres in Canada, United States and Europe. Creating unique sounds since 1979, Barry's percussion performance sculptures and micro tonally tuned glass lithophones have been featured on numerous recordings including his CD 'Crystal Bones' ('Prophet gently blows the doors off our settled notions of timbre and tonality.’Globe and Mail, Robert Everett-Green) and with guitarist William Beauvais’ in ‘Invisible Cities’.

Barry’s solo exhibition project ‘Dwellings & Incursions’ combines sculpture,
photography, video, and sound art. The show travels to communities outside of Toronto (Rails End Gallery Haliburton & Lawrences House Centre for the Arts Sarnia), interacts with aspects of the local environment and provides workshops for school students and community members.

Barry’s chime sculptures appear at Musideum 401 Richmond Street West Main Floor. Toronto, ON M5V 3A8. Canada, in private collections throughout North America. Made of rattan, copper, brass, aluminium and bamboo, this new offering is Series #3, reflecting some of the classic smaller shapes of Series #1 and the larger pieces of the Agawa Series (#2) with the addition of dogwood branches to the palette of materials. Lyrical sculptural drawings in air for the eye and the ear.

His photographs have appeared at Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival 2012, in magazines and books including Janice Pomer’s Dance Composition, An Interrelated Arts Approach, which features a music CD containing over 30 of Barry’s original compositions.

Barry’s outdoor interactive sound sculptures include “A Gathering of Quivers’ The Tree Museum Muskoka, ‘Black Quiver’ at MacLaren Art Centre Barrie, ‘Synthecycletron’ a seasonally permanent sculpture commissioned by
New Adventures in Sound Art on Toronto Island, and ‘Sound Booth’ in “Ice
Follies 2010” W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery, North Bay. 

Barry continues to perform live original music & sound art in solo and improv group concerts including solo and duet performances at the Royal Ontario Museum Friday Night Live series.
