Over and over again, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji reminds us that this life is not permanent! Don’t wait until later, tomorrow or next week, Guru Ji says enjoy the bliss of Vaheguru now! How? Sing the praises of Vaheguru (Wondrous Enlightener, God). In this age of darkness, where the five vices (lust, anger, greed, attachment and pride) wreak havoc on our spiritual journey to Vaheguru, singing the praises of Vaheguru will save us.

When we get that ras (sweetness) from the love of Vaheguru, just as Bhagat Farid Ji did, then and only then, nothing else will compare to that bliss.

ਸਿਰੁ ਕੰਪਿਓ ਪਗ ਡਗਮਗੇ ਨੈਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇ ਹੀਨ ॥ 
sir kanpio pag ddagmage nain jot te heen |
The head shakes, the feet stagger, and the eyes become dull and weak.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਈ ਤਊ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲੀਨ ॥੪੭॥ 
kahu naanak eh bidh bhe-ee taoo na har ras leen |47|
Says Nanak, this is your condition. Even now, you have not savoured the sublime essence of Vaheguru.

ਨਿਜ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਜਗਤੁ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ 
nij kar dekhio jagat mai ko kaahoo ko naahi |
I had looked upon the world as my own, but no one belongs to anyone else.

ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਖੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੪੮॥ 
naanak thir har bhagat hai tih raakho man maahi |48|
O Nanak, only devotional worship of Vaheguru is permanent; enshrine this in your mind.

ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਭ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ ਜਾਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥

The world and its affairs are totally false; know this well, my friend.

ਕਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥੪੯॥ 
keh naanak thir naa rahai jio baaloo kee bheet |49|
Says Nanak, it is like a wall of sand; it shall not endure.

In this video, Bhai Baljit Singh explains how this world is like a dream. Throughout our lives, we invest so much of our time in relationships that may not last. When people leave this world, we go though mourning and sometimes fall into a state of depression. By reading the Bani (teachings) of Salok Mahalla 9, we can begin to understand how temporary things are, and how we can better spend our time to try and reach a higher state of consciousness.

ਰਾਮੁ ਗਇਓ ਰਾਵਨੁ ਗਇਓ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥
raam geio raavan geio jaa kau bahu parvaar |
Raam Chand passed away, as did Raavan, even though he had many relatives.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੫੦॥
kahu naanak thir kachh nehee supne jio sansaar |50|
Says Nanak, nothing lasts forever; the world is like a dream.

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਜੋ ਅਨਹੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
chintaa taa kee keejeeai jo anhonee hoe |
We are only to worry, if something unexpected is to happen.

ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੫੧॥
ehu maarag sansaar ko naanak thir nehee koe |51|
This is the way of the world, O Nanak; nothing is stable or permanent.

ਜੋ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਹੈ ਪਰੋ ਆਜੁ ਕੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
jo upjio so binas hai paro aaj kai kaal |
Whatever has been created shall be destroyed; everyone shall perish, today or tomorrow.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੫੨॥
naanak har gun gaae le chhaadd sagal janjaal |52|
O Nanak, sing the Glorious Praises of Vaheguru, and give up all other entanglements.

My strength is exhausted, and I am in bondage; I cannot do anything at all.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਬ ਓਟ ਹਰਿ ਗਜ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਹੁ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੫੩॥ 
kahu naanak ab ott har gaj jio hohu sahaae |53|
Says Nanak, now, Vaheguru is my Support; He will help me, as He did the elephant.

naanak sabh kichh tumrai haath mai tum hee hot sahaae |54|
Nanak: everything is in Your hands, Vaheguru; You are my Helper and Support.

Says Nanak, in this tragedy, Vaheguru alone is my support.

kahu naanak eh jagat mai kin japio gur mant |56|
Says Nanak, rare are those who change the Guru's Mantra in this world.

jih simrat sankatt mittai daras tuhaaro hoe |57|1|
Meditating in remembrance on it, my troubles are taken away; I have received Your blessed vision.

Why are you engrossed in poison?
You are not detached, even for a moment!

Your youth has passed away like this, and old age has overtaken your body.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਅਉਧ ਜਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਬੀਤਿ ॥੩॥
kahu naanak bhaj har manaa audh jaat hai beet |3|
Says Nanak, meditate on Vaheguru; your life is fleeting away!

ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਪਹੂਚਿਓ ਆਨਿ ॥
biradh bheo soojai nehee kaal pahoochio aan |
You have become old, and you do not understand that death is overtaking you.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਰ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਭਜੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੪॥
kahu naanak nar baavre kio na bhajai bhagvaan |4|
Says Nanak, you are insane! Why do you not meditate on Vaheguru (God)?

ਧਨੁ ਦਾਰਾ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਿਨਿ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥ 
dhan daaraa sampat sagal jin apunee kar maan |
Your wealth, spouse, and all the possessions which you claim as your own,

ਇਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਜਾਨਿ ॥੫॥
in mai kachh sangee nehee naanak saachee jaan |5|
none of these shall go with you in the end. O Nanak, know this as true.
