Basics of Sikhi Podcast is a relaxed talk show about Sikhism (Sikhi) and topics related. 

Most discussions and learning about Sikhi take place in a formal setting like a Gurdwara (Sikh temple), by way of Punjabi speaking Parchariks (educators) speaking to the congregation. In recent years, many educators have taken to online platforms such as YouTube & Facebook to inspire, educate and spread the message of Sikhi to the world, in English.

Our successful and popular YouTube channel, Basics of Sikhi (be sure to subscribe!) has been hugely appreciated as a new, interactive and modern way of learning about Sikhi, especially by the younger generation, some of which who cannot speak or understand Punjabi so much.

In a similar way, this Podcast, hosted by Sukhdeep Singh (Sikh educator at Basics of Sikhi) and Karanveer Singh (Sikh volunteer), is continuing that innovation by bringing learning about Sikhi to an informal and relaxed platform in the form of this talk show podcast. Sukhdeep & Karanveer will invite different guests to the Podcast to discuss various topics directly and indirectly related to Sikhi e.g. Sikh history, traditions, fitness, nutrition, mental health, music and the list goes on!...

In this podcast, we speak about the broad topic of animation and its role in delivering positive messages associated with Sikhi. We also talk about how Sikhs could be supporting similar endeavours such as full-time Kirtanis (faith-based musicians), Artists, poets and historians.

Before undertaking tasks, we often take in to consideration ‘what others might say, what others might think’. This was prevalent in the time of Guru Angad Dev Ji just as much as it is now. When Guru Ji was given the Gur Gaddi (Guru’s throne), Mata Khivi Ji took up the immense seva (selfless service) of feeding the congregation that came to visit Guru Ji. In this video, Bibi Gurprit Kaur describes how Mata Khivi Ji went against the stigma of the time and unwaveringly carried out the seva of Langar (free communal food), because her Guru’s happiness was more important than anything else.

Balwand says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a noble woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade to all.

ਲੰਗਰਿ ਦਉਲਤਿ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖੀਰਿ ਘਿਆਲੀ ॥
langar daulat vanddeeai ras amrit kheer ghiaalee |
She distributes the bounty of the Guru's Langar; the kheer - the rice pudding and ghee, is like sweet ambrosia.

Our previous generations emigrated to the west in the worst conditions of racism, poverty and having next to no religious rights. They fought in the world wars, and also worked hard, as a result building a positive reputation. Sikhs earned the rights that we appreciate today that protect the likes of the Kirpan and the Sikh identity. They built Gurdware (Sikh temples) around the world and have left our generation with a great foundation to build on. Unfortunately our generation have failed in our job to protect our Gurdware and push the Khalsa Panth forward. We are stuck in remembering the legacies of the past rather than making history now.

In this extremely powerful, inspiring and hard hitting talk, Bhai Jagraj Singh discusses where we have gone wrong and what we need to do to flourish, using a Shabad (hymn) of Guru Amar Das Ji.
