Before undertaking tasks, we often take in to consideration ‘what others might say, what others might think’. This was prevalent in the time of Guru Angad Dev Ji just as much as it is now. When Guru Ji was given the Gur Gaddi (Guru’s throne), Mata Khivi Ji took up the immense seva (selfless service) of feeding the congregation that came to visit Guru Ji. In this video, Bibi Gurprit Kaur describes how Mata Khivi Ji went against the stigma of the time and unwaveringly carried out the seva of Langar (free communal food), because her Guru’s happiness was more important than anything else.

ਬਲਵੰਡ ਖੀਵੀ ਨੇਕ ਜਨ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਛਾਉ ਪਤ੍ਰਾਲੀ ॥
balvandd kheevee nek jan jis bahutee chhaao patraalee |
Balwand says that Khivi, the Guru's wife, is a noble woman, who gives soothing, leafy shade to all.

ਲੰਗਰਿ ਦਉਲਤਿ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਖੀਰਿ ਘਿਆਲੀ ॥
langar daulat vanddeeai ras amrit kheer ghiaalee |
She distributes the bounty of the Guru's Langar; the kheer - the rice pudding and ghee, is like sweet ambrosia.

Mata Gujri Ji is most commonly remembered as the grandmother of the Chaar Sahibzaade - the Four beloved sons (Princes) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. She is depicted in pictures and movies through her last moments with the two younger sahibzaade up to the point they were martyred by Wazir Khan, but this was not the only hardship Mata Ji endured. She was a devoted wife to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, a strong willed mother to Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the epitome of strength despite the hardships Mata Ji faced. It’s said that the love of a Mother compares to none, so when Guru Gobind Singh Ji decreed that "the entire Khalsa Panth are your children, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji showered her love to each and every Gursikh henceforth. We are blessed to call Mata Sahib Kaur Ji our Mother, who to this day, blesses us with so much love. In her Hukamnaame (letters of command) to the Khalsa Panth, she refers to us as her ‘Farzand Put’ her beloved children. Our previous generations emigrated to the west in the worst conditions of racism, poverty and having next to no religious rights. They fought in the world wars, and also worked hard, as a result building a positive reputation. Sikhs earned the rights that we appreciate today that protect the likes of the Kirpan and the Sikh identity. They built Gurdware (Sikh temples) around the world and have left our generation with a great foundation to build on. Unfortunately our generation have failed in our job to protect our Gurdware and push the Khalsa Panth forward. We are stuck in remembering the legacies of the past rather than making history now.

In this extremely powerful, inspiring and hard hitting talk, Bhai Jagraj Singh discusses where we have gone wrong and what we need to do to flourish, using a Shabad (hymn) of Guru Amar Das Ji.

ਹਸਤੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਹਰਣਿ ਜਿਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ 
hastee sir jio ankas hai aharan jio sir de |
The elephant offers its head to the reins, and the anvil offers itself to the hammer;
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿ ਕੈ ਊਭੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ 
man tan aagai raakh kai oobhee sev kare |
just so, we offer our minds and bodies to our Guru; we stand before Him, and serve Him.
