 Electrifying Mojo, inspirateur de l'imaginaire techno

La techno, qui aurait pu s'appeler "hi-tech soul", n'est pas née en Europe dans les années 1990 mais plutôt à Detroit et à Chicago à la fin des années 1970 et au début des années 1980. Au croisement de la culture disco et de la culture punk, avec un imaginaire souvent proche de Star Wars, la techno peut se résumer comme "la rencontre de George Clinton et de Kraftwerk dans un ascenseur", ou encore ainsi : "it was Jimi Hendrix, Philip Glass, Kraftwerk, Prince and the B-52's on a spaceship". 

Frédéric de Longueau, DJ et consultant en design sonore, a choisi de raconter cette histoire à partir d'une figure-clé, celle de Electrifying Mojo, de son vrai nom Charles Johnson, un DJ légendaire qui anima une émission très influente sur différentes radios de Detroit entre 1977 et le milieu des années 1980.

C'est lui qui fit connaître des groupes comme Parliament Funkadelic, The Gap Band, Zapp... groupes phares de Detroit à la fin des années 1970. C'est lui également qui lança la carrière de Prince au début des années 1980.

Autour d'Electrifying Mojo, Frédéric de Longueau évoque les trois figures fondatrices de la techno : Juan Atkins, Derrick May et Kevin Saunderson, à la fois musiciens, producteurs, remixeurs. Et en conclusion, il explique que "si on ne connaît pas Electrifying Mojo, on ne peut pas comprendre la French Touch"...
