Philippa Pacho is back on Bassiani airwaves for Podcast 178. The dynamic artist behind positivesource and STHLM Murder Girls knows a thing or two about setting a crowd in motion. Her shapeshifting beats and unmatched energy fast making her a household name far outside her native Sweden and more recent Berlin base. Her residency at Stockholm mainstay Under Bron is about a decade old, but there’s not even so much as a suggestion of hesitancy or weariness in her work, carrying a passion that’s infectious, and as palpable in a club as it is on screen (check out her recent sets on Hör). Her Techno really is powerful stuff, a sustained sonic onslaught, an unyielding beast, hulking and formidable but also smart. For many DJs whose sound is so heavily reliant on bass to carry forth their message, a slip into monotony wouldn’t be entirely unpredictable, but Philippa’s cunning use of supporting effects and melody keeps even a 6 hour journey like this one interesting from start to finish. This up and coming doyenne of loop Techno really is a force like no other.

Under the cover of his extra-terrestrial pseudonym, UFO95’s powerful rhythms are the culmination of a life lived around music in many forms. One could say he’s come full circle: as the son of parents who lived above the nightclub they owned and ran when he was younger. Adolescent forays in rock led him to study sound engineering, and eventually right back to the dancefloor, where he now plays exclusively live sets patchworked together from his own productions. From unorthodox beginnings, Killian Vaissade has more than grown into his role. UFO95 is his pandemic-era brainchild, a project that’s taken off at breakneck speed, collaborative works with Mama Told Ya label-boss Anetha, an appearance on Amniote Editions x Mala Junta’s VA compilation and the launch of his very own ARCHIVE imprint (June 2023) just a few of the feats he’s managed to pull off in his short career. Expect more to come in the form of driving, adamantine beats. Steve Rachmad’s techno project STERAC has for many years been a seminal force in his native Netherlands and beyond. Releasing over 100 releases across the much feted Delsin, Klockworks, Mote-Evolver, Tresor and others, he’s become something of a cult figure, and dubbed a father of Detroit in The Netherlands for added points. It’s hard to imagine a more venerated artist and there’s good reason why, Rachmad’s fearless approach to production puts him a cut above many of his peers, often taking pure feeling and a collection of well worn machines as a starting point and trusting his gut along the path to finished product. For Bassiani Podcast 190, the Dutch master of techno delivers a thorough lesson in expert mixing. From orchestral strings to utilitarian bleeps, Rachmad’s sound bridges a gap no one else can. An ode to the motor city with a healthy measure of string composition thrown in, recorded live at the club during the Token X Reclaim Your City night on November 3rd.

Another live recording from the Reclaim Your City X Token night in early November and this one‘s a banger. Marcal is the budding Brazilian star act you may have heard of, commanding recognition post pandemic with his highly addictive loops. That’s certainly true in the case of Radio Slave, who played one of the former’s tracks on his show for Rinse FM and sought out the talent responsible. A serendipitous (online) meeting that blossomed into a deeper connection and had Marcal signed to Rekids, Enemy Records and Token. And here they are a little down the line and all the luckier for it. Marcal’s focus is on intelligent and minimal builds, those that work by way of rhythmic complexity and highly developed textures, brainy techno with a pinch of mischief. Bassiani Podcast 192 is a prime example of that formula in action, a two hour dose of the finest cuts and hardest basslines recorded live on the Bassiani floor.

Based out of Lisbon, Vil & Cravo are the ice-cool duo making waves in the city of seven hills and beyond. They’re the force behind local collective Hayes, whose foot-soldiers include names like fellow Lusitanian Nørbak and Raär among them. The duo have a string of releases on other labels too, Klockworks and Dax J’s Monnom Black no less. Despite this, they keep a relatively low profile, which lends their sound an underground patina reflected in their ability to find and broadcast the rarest electronic gems. These beats and ability to instinctively read a crowd are lightning fast, and so are those raving in front of them. This infectious dancefloor energy comes in a brisk three hour package for Bassiani Podcast 194. Live recorded at NDRX’s Invited by Resident night at the club back on November 17th, this one’s brimming with groovy and fulgurant bangers: breakneck and unremitting techno from start to finish.

Kasper Marott’s back with a second bout of electronic mischief for Bassiani Podcast 197. The Copenhagen based selector’s been around for many years and has only improved his knack for rhythms from one to the next, that and his singular aptitude for reading a room and playing to a crowd’s most primal instincts. His releases on Seilscheibenpfeiler, Kulør and his own imprint Axces every bit as catchy as his longer monologues behind decks. A little note on Axces: collective’s a closer descriptor, a group of friends and feedback loop designed to create all manner of wonderful sounds, visual artefacts and memorable parties that includes Marott’s buddies Alfredo92, Popmix, Søren Kinch, A. Waze and Martin Gilleshøj. Back to its co-founder: Marott’s a tried hand whose genre-bending flair is both austere and playful, straddling the binaries that often threaten to typecast aspiring DJs. His airy and saccharine disco a world away from the techno frenzy he manifests for this latest instalment. This is his closing set from the club floor back in December, nine hours of warped loops and general techno frenzy. Pulsating rave from this charismatic Danish phenom.

Salty DJ is one to watch. He’s a Berlin-based vinyl head and resident of the Shockwerk collective whose parties have been causing a stir in the southern half of Germany. This new kid on the block is wasting no time getting out there, with notable performances at Weltspiele, Tresor, Mala Junta, and Kulør’s label night at Berghain. His sound is indicative of a particularly defined social current rippling through music at the moment, a re-remembering and reconfiguration of the experience of youth in the 90s and parallels found on dancefloors today: soundtracked by plenty of the decade’s finest techno and trance-leaning frequencies, and plenty of shades there-between. His slamming beats barely leave enough space for you to catch a breath. Skittish and quick as a flash, there’s little doubt Salty DJ’s wax wizardry holds great promise. Bassiani Podcast 198 is powerful stuff, an hour-long dispatch from this fresh and compelling prodigy.

DJ Masda is a seasoned selector renowned for his deep excursions in house and techno. Born and raised at the foot of Mount Fuji, his path has taken him out from the shadow of the sacred mountain, through Osaka, and placed him firmly in the nerve centre of European techno, Berlin. He made his first steps in the 90s, spinning expertly chosen vinyls and developing a keen ear for subtler details that quickly got him noticed. In the decades since, he’s been busy building a body of work that includes playing at some of the world’s most revered venues and running his very own label and club series Cabaret with So Inagawa. Under their imprint,  he’s primarily focused on giving a platform to friends, those with whom he shares a personal connection and whose music brings something fresh and fun to the label; this fraternity of musical souls are hard at work to bring the very best of the Cabaret sound to market. Here, Masda’s own signature mix is made manifest for Bassiani Podcast 199: a patiently crafted three-hour dive into eerie electro, bouncy house, even a peppering of Italo nostalgia, recorded live at Horoom’s season close last July. A perfect end to summer and a perfect start to a new year, an act that’ll be hard to follow.

Now in its 200th instalment, this Podcast has given voice to a diverse offering of global talents across the musical spectrum, from the democratic rhythms of zeitgeist appropriate techno and house through to more avant-garde synthwork.

This next guest has cast a large shadow over the technosphere, so large in fact, that no introduction could fully encompass the breadth of his achievements. But in brief: Ben Klock is a titan whose formative years were spent playing marathon mixes to the crowds at Berlin’s (then recently opened) Berghain. Off the back of his endurance sets and the club’s success he became a household name whose influence grew to be felt across the world, with a body of work that includes appearances at an exhaustive list of clubs and festivals, a number of hot releases on Ostgut Ton and an equally respected self-run label (Klockworks) to boot. On this second imprint, his own productions have repeatedly seen the light of day, alongside those from the likes of DVS1, Sterac, Stef Mendesidis and younger talents like Temudo and Vil & Cravo. The sound, ubiquitous as it is, will be familiar to anyone involved in the world of electronic music and there’s good reason for that: Klock’s deep and percussive work and ability to pull from a wide range of influences have earmarked him as a unique agent for the techno cause. DASCO is a hurricane force with recent roots in Berlin, active for the past decade and packing as strong a punch today as she ever has. That’s as true of her music as it is her persona. She has the kind of rare, contagious energy that’s capable of setting dancefloors ablaze: animated, celebratory and full of joie de vivre. As DJ, she draws from the wells of Chicago house and UR, as much as 90s UK rave: dispatching rhythms from the booths at Tresor, Panorama Bar, RSO, Bristol’s Motion and many more. Atsushi Maeda’s a name that’s been making ripples in Japan and beyond for over a decade, diligent behind decks and intimately connected with the Tokyo scene and its usual roster of clubs past and present (Contact, rural festival, et al.). He’s the founder of party series addictedloop as well as Rural, a festival that’s invited a crowd out for a summer escape each year for the past 16, including some formidable names in the techno field (excuse the pun) such as Jane Fitz, Wata Igarashi, DJ Nobu, GAS, Higher Intelligence Agency, DjRUM and more. From Taipei to Berlin, this seasoned selector has made a habit of delivering only the finest cuts, with a highly calculated and brain-stimulating brand of techno that’s apt to take his listeners on an alien trip. Bassiani Podcast 202 is an hour-long pitch from this polyrhythmic master, packed back-to-back with rattling basslines and discordant beeps, a symphony of laser precision for the most pious of ravers.

This liminal collage of gentle lullabies and acoustic murmurs is soft and a touch plaintive, but warm and loving all the same. Invoking everything from glitchy IDM to ballads that bend towards the strange and pineal, a technicolor dream sequence conjured up by this offbeat techno double-act.

Zenaari Mix 010 - Dj Tool & D.Dan

Belgian beatmaker Marco Bailey’s musical footprint is as large as his career is long. For 35 years, he’s built a following and tried his hand at just about everything a DJ/producer can attempt: countless performances in every corner of the globe, collaborations, music labels, a radio show, a music festival, you name it. He’s a deft ear, a lover of longer mixes, through which he’s able to craft escapist stories that bridge musical genres and allow him to calibrate a crowd’s emotion in real time. His records too pull from a panoply of styles and reflect an ever-evolving universe of sounds that stretch from his earliest dabbles in techno (his big break was the 2000 release of his Play It Back EP on Carl Cox’s Intec) through to more modern renditions of club focused sounds. Hot off the press is his latest album ‘Nocturno’ (Materia, November 2023), a project that tentatively began some years ago and has unfolded at its own pace; there’s no need to rush after all, he’s planning on sticking around. His rich sonic palette graces the airwaves for Bassiani Podcast 203, two hours of pugilistic basslines and sonorous synths, monolith rhythms from this long-serving heavyweight.

This next guest has been a loyal contributor to Oslo’s cultural landscape for some years now, and moulded it to his own imagining. Marius Bø is one half of Accelerationism and cofounder of the UTE collective, whose name has become synonymous with surreptitious forest raves and a label of the same name (UTE.REC), publisher to fellow purveyors of contemporary psychedelic trance like Oprofessionell (UTE’s second mastermind) and Alpha Tracks. Creeping out of the Scandinavian forests that have played host to those painstakingly curated gatherings comes a fearsome sound distinctly his own. His work dovetails futuristic soundscapes and old-school acid distortions to mind altering effect, and posits this guttural psychedelic techno as a result. It’s a trance-permeated amalgam that’s gaining traction everywhere from Basel's Elyisa to Taipei’s Pawnshop and a raft of other venues in any city worth its salt. Bassiani Podcast 204 is an atmospheric two-hour blend of vast and trippy beats, primordial techno with woodland roots, where Marius dives into the deeper facets of his collection.

It’s a cheeky and salacious celebration of life, a middle finger to imposed normativity, one that ramps up the serotonin minute by minute. Bassiani Podcast 205 is cheeky and fearless, a no fucks given mix packed full of glistening synths and euphoric diva vocals, feel-good rhythms from the Bassiani floor.

The presented EP by Newa was created during pandemic times, in isolation, when artists worldwide had to give up their basic needs and look for new opportunities to express themselves in complete deprivation. A transformation into a physical vacuum was required to regain the balance—lost in the face of an existential dilemma. Each composition is an artistic embodiment of metamorphosis and temperance, a sonic manifestation of a continuous process, an improvisation with an arsenal as limited as people's actions under isolation. “Equilibrium” describes and discusses the universal issues for humankind arising from sociocultural and psychological contexts and does so in the language of music. With its rhythmic cadence and frequency components, this record acquires an almost tangible form that goes beyond all the limits of perception. The accompanying energy of sensations, cognitive processes, and new consciousness inspired by the discoveries transform into a single story of four tracks, where each carries a feeling of undisguised sublimation as the ultimate source of creativity.

The release explores the subject's relationship to the environment and how a modern soul interacts with large-scale cataclysms, of how one might confront the darkness and what will be one's armament in the face of the new (the latter in this case, not being derived from the old); How does the inevitable need for expression arise, amidst a chaotic storm behind unchanging behavior, and how is this storm reharmonized if the recipient body and mind belong to an artist? How is the balance achieved, and when is the equilibrium reached? These rhetorical questions are best thought through by listening to this record, as frequency is the leading instrument and minimalistic phrasing naturally follows the stream of consciousness.

The remix of “Equilibrium” belongs to Peachlyfe, a Danish musician known for their anarchist spirit, blending the rave rush with a drive of queer resistance to intense experiences. In the remix, the structural blueprint is strengthened with a gentle and meticulously measured interpretation; the care with which one artist approaches the story of another is clearly visible. Similar to Newa's personal experience, a middle ground between transformation and balance can also be noticed here.

“Equilibrium,” on the one hand, tells a very intimate, individual story and, on the other, echoes the challenging task this era has set for itself—the need for action and evolution despite the loneliness, emptiness, stillness, and emotional contention of the environment—all of this being a uniting force, bringing the listener into one big community; “Equilibrium” responds to a person's ability persisting into active development through a repetitive and monotonous context. Harmonious syncopes and airy fragmentation within the monumental framework are a metaphor for this, preparing not the destruction of an immovable internal constitution but for simultaneous change.

France’s proliferation of techno talent is hard to contest these days, but Mathys Lenne’s here in case you had any doubts. The DJ/producer also goes by The Scan, and makes up half of Classic Blue, pushing forward a steely vision of the genre that’s both shrewd and quick as a whippet. Alongside projects on HAYES, his beats have shown up too as vinyl EP on Blue Hour’s eponymous record label as well as a debut LP on Dutch powerhouse MORD (2023). It’s a hard hitting genus of techno that borrows from the layered and cognitive approach employed by forebears Efdemin and Float Records label boss TWR72. He’s been busy, and found a powerful voice he spends night after night bringing to dancefloors and headphones alike. For Bassiani Podcast 206, the francophone techno envoy weaves a complex mesh of warped kicks that doesn’t let up for a second, a building tension only someone with faculties as sharp as his could successfully maintain. If this is the first time you’ve heard his name you’d be wise to take note, with an ear like his, little can stop him.

Experimental Podcast and event series Zenaari continues to break new ground with this next instalment from Nikolaj Jakobsen (Sugar) and Emil Aastrup’s new alias Flutek. This one’s highly conceptual from start to finish: a collection of in situ recordings from the recent past including test setups from aleatory sessions, tracks that got lost in the never-ending process of tinkering and other bristling frequencies from the misc folder. In sending each other patches for the past few years, they’ve also tweaked them, sent them back and forth, and expanded and reinterpreted them into entirely new sounds. Along the way, they’ve learned from each other and their hardware too, investigating the fringes of these experiments and harvesting what they could in return. Zenaari Mix 011 is the result of this ongoing alliance: shimmering atmospherics, a spray of irregular notes and warped drones that resonate and pioneer a strange new language between man and machine. A left to right hemisphere idiom and bold new direction for this budding collaborative project.

Next up comes a long-time torchbearer of the Naples techno scene. Gaetano Parisio first came to attention under the pseudonym Gaetek, and released a string of records on labels like Planet Rhythm and Primate Recordings that quickly found their way into the collections of esteemed selectors like Dave Clarke and Jeff Mills. That was the 90s, and as the new millennium broke he donned his own name and funnelled his creative energies into releasing record upon record under several (of his own) manifestations of imprint: CONFORM the first, followed by ART (Advanced Techno Research), SOUTHSOUL and ADAGIO. With his trusty three/four-turntable, two-mixer set-up he kept up a regular touring schedule and authored many memorable nights, pushing a syncretic brand of Techno that took influence from the wealth of peers around him. Ultimately, the pace of output and the demands of DJ life were anything but light, and so it was that 2007 put a pause to his activity. But after a ten year break he moved to Barcelona, set up a new studio and has been cooking up his usual frenzied productions since. Much as before, his gritty, unfettered loops wear the unmistakable guise of his earlier CONFORM releases, and carry a sheer momentum that’s a surefire bet til the end of the night, if not much longer. Bassiani Podcast 207 is a window onto Gaetano’s vision; circling basslines that charge headlong with no hesitation, pure, driving techno, recorded live at Kvanchi’s Curated by Resident night on the Bassiani floor back in January.

Repping an oft overlooked Swiss techno contingent comes the next guest in Bassiani’s podcast series. Basel born and raised Garçon is one of the most promising names to call the bucolic town on the shores of the Rhine his home. He got an early start, mixing from the age of 14 and booked a mere two years later, assiduously cobbling together influences in his early work and soon delivering performances city-wide. First those at Hinterhof (now closed) and then those at local staple Elysia. With musical collaborator Agonis he’s also fired up techno label Amenthia Recordings, an agar dish for like-minded Basel music makers. His own sonic experiments are a purely live affair, and that’s no bad thing. Garçon’s escapades, from Waking Life to Barcelona’s Parallel have honed his voice and made of him an adept hand when faced with the strenuous demands of modulating crowd energy. Nodding to a range of influences across the electronic map he harbours a superlative talent for finding niche sounds at the fringes of common scope. Enter Podcast 208: towering, no-bullshit sounds, an hour of ghostly, mechanical whispers and powerful basslines, earth-shaking and infinitesimally precise techno from this connoisseur selector.

Born in Algeria, and raised between France and the Netherlands, with a later stint in London, Mary Lake has lived a life through the lens of different cultures, each adding a little more to her experience in the realm of electronic music. It wasn’t always her medium, but in DJing she’s found her most authentic voice, with her start at more intimate house parties, then on to the best and brightest of Dutch clubs and festivals. For her, creative discovery and expanding the limits of craft is key, covering both the range of utilitarian techno and more atypical sounds, the likes of which she was apt to share via her experimental pandemic-era radio show Worshipping Discordia. Alongside that, and a slew of catchy releases, she’s now a Spielraum resident and frequently billed on stages from Dekmantel to De School to Tresor, Bassiani and beyond. Her percussive techno spreads the kind of wildly infectious crowd energy that drew a younger her towards it many moons ago, now she's on the inside looking out. From raves in both their homelands to releases on SK-eleven, HAYES, Room Trax and positivesource, as well as a shared residency for Vault Sessions that’s brought them here for Bassiani Podcast 210, the duo posit a deep and driving compound of high-voltage rhythms in their day-to-day praxis. Slamming techno that has claimed a rightful space among the greatest names of their generation. Layer by layer, an instinctive formulation of heaving basslines and delicate hi-hats balanced with utmost precision. It’s a seamless communion of complementary worldviews in respect to sound, a rich tapestry of ever morphing loops.
