We're excited about VDS Podcast Nr.022 - our last VDS Podcast for the year of 2022! Closing this amazing year with a seasonal atmospherical string-packed journey is none other than one of the heads behind the legendary Pingipung label, Mme Bing from Hamburg, Germany.

Mme Bing, aka Andrea Wienck, is a passionate vinyl collector. She has honed her musical taste while co-running the Pingipung label for over a decade, as well as by working in record shops. She prefers her melodies raw and gloomy, and she selects them very carefully - it’s a rare but always delightful moment to catch her live at the decks.

Dive into this beauty of strings, guitars and melancholic melodies, which Mme Bing herself calls “The heart as a paperweight”. Mme Bing recommends listening to this set with a purring cat on your chest.

"A selection of records I have been digging in the North of France and Paris for the last months. The mix is influenced by my move last year from Tokyo (Japan) to Roubaix (France). Excited to share these sounds that have been entering my life lately: French and different oriental influenced folk and jazz with often medieval structure elements or instruments. Also one Egyptian and one Japanese record. This collection of tracks has been also inspired by my nomadic like lifestyle lately, travelling a lot, always on the move and encountering talented, raw, honest and inspiring people along the way."

Wenn sich eine Band auf schmissige Partyhymnen über den Tod und die Apokalypse versteht, dann The Burning Hell! Die kanadische Formation um Sänger und Songschreiber Mathias Kom hat es im Laufe ihres fast 20-jährigen Bestehens perfektioniert, Songs im Spannungsfeld von fröhlich-düster-melancholisch-komisch zu schreiben und sich dabei genretechnisch nicht festzufahren. Auf „Ghost Palace“ (2024), ihrem mittlerweile zehnten Album, bewegen sich The Burning Hell zwischen Garage-Folk, Lo-Fi-Power-Pop und Ukulele-Balladen und versehen ihre bitterbösen Songs erneut mit allerlei popkulturellen Referenzen. 

Bei ihrem Besuch im ByteFM Studio am 25. April 2025 hat die Band ihren Song „Ghost Palace“ live gespielt.

The band was as blue as the melted Joni Mitchell cassette
On the dash of the van they had nicknamed regret
Touring round the united kingdom 
Selling compact discs to the people of England
And wales and Scotland, oh it’s hard to be a rock band these days
People like to spend their evenings in different ways

That’s just what the band was thinking 
When the engine died and the lights started blinking
Their lives flashed before them in a slideshow of backstages and bars
As the van slowed down amidst the oncoming cars
They pulled it over and they called for a tow
Off the road

Appearing from the mist was a hidden oasis
AKA the Scotch Corner service station
The drummer was relaxed but the singer was panicked
When out of the fog stepped a magic mechanic
He called himself Stevie with an i and an e
He waved his wand and his wrench and said follow me

So they all drove north in Stevie’s wife’s Fiat Panda
Just a slice of the glamour of being a band, uh huh
They made the show because the show was important
The sky was as damp as the cheeks of an orphan
Same rain as before just in a different postal code
But they said at least we’re back on the road

Stevie made a midnight run right after the gig
Drove back to Scotch Corner to fix their rig
The band panda’d their way the next day south
There was the wizard with a crinkly old smile on his mouth
The van sparkled in the Yorkshire dawn
They turned to thank Stevie, but Stevie was gone

The road is a lot like the Cormac Mcarthy book
Less cannibalism, but a similar look
There’s nothing more post-apocalyptic
Than a landscape of truck stops and rock critics
To paraphrase Joni on the first track of that melted cassette
It’s a lonely road and it’s not over yet

Beloved visitors,

Know your roots, appreciate and accept them. I was heavily socialized with European dance music of the 1990s with the whole genre of trance music playing an essential part in my life back then. There's something quite addictive about this mixture of heavy bass-driven beats and trippy synthesizer patterns. Obviously, it's quite a cheesy sound but I recently found myself revisiting some of the music from back then, especially since I fell in love with psy-trance last summer and I should actually be dancing on a festival to this sound these days but since it's the summer of Corona I have to skip that for now. So, instead I produced a mighty throwback mix with some of my personal pop/dance/trance anthems from that specific period of time between 1998 and 2003.

That's the music I listened to in my youth, featuring personal hits and little treasures I recently rediscovered while digging through my personal archives. You can find tracks by producers like Chicane, Blank & Jones, ATB, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, RMB, Above & Beyond and a few more in here... all the big players from that big sounding field of electronic dance music. If you free yourself from certain expectations and, you know, whatever is considered cool these days it's actually fun to enjoy this sort of sound and - well - actually, feel the trance. It's quite an epic adventure but so is the music so the length is fitting. Let me know if you need any ID here. Thanks for joining me on this ride.
