Two Hearted Rounder the new album from Sarah Lee Langford, is on a precipice. More specifically: A barstool – a place where life is messy, but the whiskey is neat. It’s here that one of her protagonists is given a proposition – one that has her reckoning the pain of her recent past against the thrill of newfound freedoms. More often than not, Langford’s subjects take the ride – and each song displays a progressively greater confidence, strength, and almost savage commitment to a new life. It’s liberating in more ways than one.
Backed by a gang of Birmingham, AL’s greasiest rockers, including members of The Dexateens and Vulture Whale, Two Hearted Rounder is blessed with loose limbs as well as deadly aim. Much like Langford’s own musical roots, these songs embody the best elements of the Old South and the New West via a well-crafted blend of Appalachian austerity, cosmic country, and honky tonk funk that should appeal to fans of Gillian Welch, Joni Mitchell, Loretta Lynn, and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
And while the grooves are satisfying, and the melodies indelible, it’s Langford’s incisive writing that will keep listeners coming back for more. Langford clearly knows Americana archetypes inside and out, but it’s her ability to imbue them with contemporary humor, beauty, and acidity that gives Two Hearted Rounder both a big heart and sharp claws.

Initially put together in memory of a family member, Olga Wojciechowska’s new album, 'Infinite Distances' is built around a similar-sounding melody that appears across the backbone of the album - the sign of something that won’t let go. Opening with ‘Images Imprisoned Within You’, the beautiful orchestral piece sets the tone for a potentially optimistic journey. But the album, with its changes in direction and varying emotion portrayed throughout the seven tracks, somehow always ends up at the same place. It was a memory Olga couldn’t shake. 

Told through several different approaches, varying from expansive modern-classical pieces, to more experimental and electronic touches in tracks like ‘Memory Of The Pioneers’ and ’Starless Water’; ‘Infinite Distances’ is a personal recollection that spans the emotions surrounding the feelings of loss; the highs, the lows, the polaroid-like happy memories, the ones that you never want to let go, and those that will never quite fade away. 

In contrast to the inspiration behind the album, the artwork from Marco Vannini brings a vivid and subjective aspect to the release, whilst maintaining the idea of fragmented and juxtaposing memories together in one place. 

As a true multi-instrumentalist, Olga has produced as Strië, for Serein with ‘Perpetual Journey’ (2018) and previously as her true name Olga Wojciechowska for the likes of Time Released Sound. Olga has also produced alongside Erik Skodvin on Sonic Pieces, collaborated with Greg Haines and reworked Nathan Fake on Ninja Tune. Olga can also be heard in the more contemporary space with commissions by Oslo Opera House and the Royal Opera House.

BBE Music present ‘Hepnotherapy’, a 2017 album by London swing group The Hep Chaps.

The Hep Chaps were founded in 1996 after David Howarth and John Wallace met up in the West End of London performing in the stage musical Good Rockin Tonight. They found a musical empathy in the sound of the 30s and 40s and formed a duo specialising in self-penned works with zany lyrics and punchy swing rhythms. In 2005 they formed a six-piece group.

Mingling well-known swing tunes from the 30s & 40s with their own originals in the same classic style this band is one of the most fun & accessible dance bands around.

The band have performed at swing dance clubs, festivals, parties & balls all over the UK and in Europe with special appearances at London’s famous 100 Club, The Jitterbug Ball, The Rhythm Riot & The Swing Cats Ball as well as at Copenhagen’s famous Jazzhouse.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson.
