Following on from recent releases on Hector Oaks’ KAOS/OAKS imprint and formidable London label Perc Trax, Christchurch, New Zealand based techno power-house Keepsakes is now presenting a 4-track EP of wonky and cheeky heavy-hitters via Boys Noize Records on ‘Lead Popsicle’. Combining the left-field sound design and heavy drums of his industrial background with the funk and groove of late 90s and early 2000s techno and second-generation Chicago house, the EP presents a tough yet playful side of the ever expanding Antipodean producer’s sound.

The EP starts with ‘Blink And Don’t Pay’ - a certified stomper taking its lead from electro and ghetto-house inspirations with threatening synth stabs, ear-worm vocal chants and shuffling drum work designed to get feet moving.

This is followed up by ‘Quit Your Dancefloor Yarn’ directly inspired by a number of unwanted club conversations. Wonky tom-led drum rhythms sit alongside quirky vocal loops and a fun alien-communication style synth section guaranteed to prevent punishing dance-floor chats.

Third up is ‘How To Edge An Edgelord’ with its rolling percussion rhythms, robotic vocal hook and atonal screeches and rumbles providing another slab of cheeky club bait for DJs seeking some degenerate drum funk in their sets.

The EP ends with ‘Tyrannical Conga’, a Keepsakes cut that has been in high demand since first being dropped on VTSS’ Dekmantel Boiler Room back in 2022. With its funky and transforming conga rhythms, flanged percussion hits, eerie vocals and sound effects and upfront chunky drum work this one has already been proving its ability to whip up dancers across international floors.

PREMIERE: Keepsakes - How To Edge An Edgelord

𝙑𝙀𝙎𝙀𝙇𝙆𝘼 𝙋𝙊𝘿𝘾𝘼𝙎𝙏 069 | 𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾

A native of Ternopil, Zapadenec discovered the techno scene at a rave in Franyk in 2020, which changed his life. In 2021 he moved to Kyiv, where he found refuge in the Vilnyy shared flat on Kyrylivska Street. Inspired by DJs in the clubs around, he began to become a DJ himself. With a controller he got from DJ Serhii Lectorii, he learned by trial and error. During the last three years, especially during the war, he performed at many events and in clubs such as Stezhka, Veselka, Arsenal XXII, Laboratorium and Otel'.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: How and where was your first DJ gig?
𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾: My first gig was supposed to be at a friend's party in a basement hookah bar. But just 20 minutes before my set, the cops raided the place and shut it down. So, not long after that, my friends and I decided to throw our own party at home. It turned out even better than expected, with a smoke machine, laser lights, and about 80 people.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What else is your talent besides entertaining audiences with music?
𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾: I think my best talent is "feeling" the crowd. I can sense the vibe ahead of time, but more importantly, in the moment. This helps me break the barrier between the DJ and the audience. As a result, my gigs are not just a presentation of a pre-made playlist but an unpredictable ride where the route and speed are determined by the energy on the dance floor.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any favorite places in Ternopil you can recommend?
𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾: My sacred path starts with hitting up AliBaba and grabbing (this is important) the best shawarma in the world. Then, you gotta chill at the local "Elysian Fields" below the Ternopil Hotel. Under the warmest sunset, enjoy the peace and that amazing shawarma. And to top it off, end a perfect day at my favorite local bar, Old Tom.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What was special about the Veselka event you took part in?
𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾: That was the first gig where I managed to convey my deep emotions. I felt an insane amount of confidence and wasn't afraid to experiment because I knew that at Veselka, I wouldn't face any judgment. I even dared to open my set with "Alphaville - Forever Young" to touch hearts and create a strong emotional connection. Plus, that's where I fulfilled my DJ dream of dancing on the DJ table. I also played for the first time with three decks and met the legendary Bjarki from Iceland, who became a very close friend. I still remember those moments with a special warmth.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any crazy plans in the near future?
𝙕𝘼𝙋𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘾: This might sound strange, but staying alive, healthy, happy, and being able to keep creating art, developing the local electronic music scene, and giving people unforgettable moments are my biggest plans.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Hamburger Bahnhof crew for the invite and to everyone who showed up and shared this magical evening with me, making it the highlight of my summer and one of the highlights of my DJ career.
