“‘Saints’ was supposed to be a song with vocals – a big New York 1984 almost freestyle type song. Originally it was just drums, bassline, and synths;
it kind of reminded me of something you would’ve heard at Danceteria in ’84 -’85,  pre house music. But I was never able to write good vocals for it. By the end, I kept adding more strings, more orchestral elements, more drums, so I ended up with an instrumental that was so filled, there just wasn’t room for real vocals on it.
I like music with vocals, but having an instrumental on a record provides a moment where the listener doesn’t have to be as engaged, so you can kind of take a little break; the parts of your brain that are engaged by people singing can quiet down for a minute and you can just relax. 

Spike said ‘Saints” reminded him of ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ and ‘Unfinished Sympathy’: when he told me that, I listened to them, and was like, ‘Oh, yeah – you’re right!’ It wasn’t intentional, and I wasn’t aware of it when I was working on it, but afterwards I was like, “Yeah, I hear it.” If you listen to records enough, eventually they are going to infect how you make your own music. The fact that “Unfinished Sympathy” is one of my favorite songs of all time, and “Slave to the Rhythm” is such an inspirational piece of music, it’s not surprising that some of those elements would come through in what I do.”

Some people mistakenly believe that The Bearded Man has never been injured, due to his near immediate reaction time and perfect situational awareness. He was, however, injured exactly one time in his life. While sunning in Queensland with a close personal friend on the back of his jet ski, he witnessed the unthinkable: He looked up and noticed the largest human waterski pyramid heíd ever seen, with none other than Pope John Paul II on top. Flabbergasted, he reached for his sunglasses -- his pinky nail caught a hair of beard, separating it from his weathered face. So doing, a single drop of blood fell into the water, forming what is now known as the Great Barrier Reef. Matt Meler watched the whole thing happen, and he was inspired to write Up On You because of it.

Chicane is such a figure, and his impact can't be overestimated.

Now, the legend is back with a brand new studio album — 'The Sum Of Its Parts'. Right from the start, you'll recognize the trademark Chicane composition style and melody. True story: riding the subway in Manhattan, The Bearded man happened upon a delightful string quartet playing in-between the platforms. When high art meets low brow, anything can happen, and while it’s safe to say that most lookers on were pleasantly surprised, one sneaky gentleman felt the need to steal the bow of the violinist mid-song. Ruining a rare beautiful moment in an otherwise bleak environment, it seemed that humanity’s better nature had lost this fight. 

Out stepped The Bearded Man, and in a flash, he plucked a handful of hairs from his glorious beard, strung them together on an elongated, stale churro, and applied rat saliva as resin. The day was saved. Let it not be said that The Bearded Man is an enemy of music. 

That’s why he loves Nicolas Haelg so darn much.

Of course you would… but that would be too easy… Instead, we’ll tell ye the tale of the time The Bearded Man invented the music box — AKA the very first boombox. Flash back to early 19th century Switzerland. The Bearded Man was having a roaring discussion with prominent watchmakers about the Antikythera Mechanism, almost exactly 100 years before it was ‘discovered’. The Bearded Man posited: “If the Greeks could use watch mechanisms two thousand years ago to predict orbital paths, why can’t we use watches now to make music on the road? So I can haz my jamz with me everywhere I go, yo?" Bam. Music box was invented on the spot. First ever tune he carried with him everywhere he went? Sir Felix’s ‘Safari’.
