Now Again Records and Sonor Music Editions announces the debut release by The Kimba Unit on 45. Grown up in Los Angeles, the talented Kimba made his musical studies in New York, developing his personal portfolio while listening to the Jazz mentors of American Spiritual/Avant-garde (Sun Ra especially), and being deeply influenced by the legendary Madlib's Jazz projects. Since his very young age, he travelled a lot to Italy, and this created the connection with the world of Italian Library music and the renomated Italian composers like Piero Umiliani and Piero Piccioni, that definitely completed and surely influenced his musical taste. The 3 tracks from this EP are entirely DIY studio recordings, with a distinct Lo-Fi sound and shades of Spiritual Jazz all over.

During every conversation among collectors and music lovers, we often throw names of artists and bands, their releases (rare or not), collaborations, their impact on the music, who sampled them, etc. … When the name Roy Ayers comes up, everybody pauses because he is the jazz-funk royalty that always requires special attention. He was on a league of his own. Incomparable to anybody else. Unfortunately, we lost him few days ago. Another legend has passed on the torch and is going to music heaven.
Like to many others, he is a huge reason why I love funk and jazz-funk. I started listening to him in the E80s with his boogie-funk period…and then I went back in time collecting every piece of records he has released as solo artist, with his band Ubiquity or as collaborators and producer on many albums from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s… I am glad that I saw him live in 2005…amazing concert.  
His legacy will continue…his music will continue to be played, sampled, and to serve as inspiration for generations to come.  RIP Mr. Ayers…you will be missed...forever!

Yesterdays New Quintet - Joe McDuphrey, Malik Flavors, Ahmad Miller, 
Monk Hughes and Otis Jackson Jr., with Madlib as producer, arranger 
and engineer.

Madlib began Yesterdays New Quintet in 2000, releasing the album Angles 
Without Edges in 2001. As the group progressed, a plan was developed for 
each of the band members to release "solo" records and to introduce new 
members and groups, many of whom performed on Madlib's Shades of Blue 
(2003), his remix album for Blue Note. 
An album of Stevie Wonder covers recorded during their formative period 
was also released later in 2003. 
Expanded beyond the original five members of YNQ, the greater collective 
grew into "Yesterdays Universe."   

As early as 2003, Madlib's all-inclusive approach to expanding Yesterdays 
Universe was causing tensions among the original core group. Yesterdays 
New Quintet announced a breakup in 2007, but by this time several new 
groups had already recorded dozens of tracks under Madlib's direction: 
Young Jazz Rebels, The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion 
Ensemble, Sound Directions, Jahari Masamba Unit, Jackson Conti with 
Ivan "Mamao" Conti from Azymuth , just to name a few. The compilation 
Yesterdays Universe (2007) served to announce these new groups. 
Medicine Show #7: High Jazz (2010) introduces even more.
