Echolocation 2023 [21/01/21]

A set I performed last month at an outdoor Echo Soundsystem showcase event. 

The Soundsystem was set up facing the water on a secluded, cozy bay in Titirangi/Huia (West Auckland/NZ). When we arrived, there were families chilling on the beach that were all very interested in what was about to happen. 

This set was the first of the day/night during the hours of 12 pm - 2 pm. The tone of the mix was curated to compliment the natural environment we were in and the music lovers who were there enjoying catching up under sun lit marquee, warming up for the night ahead.

Arguably drum & bass's first superstar, LTJ Bukem spearheaded hardcore's stylistic transition in the early 1990s into technically impressive and rhythmically nimble jungle. His style - icy, deep and precise - reaches for influences from cosmic Detroit techno and cool mid-century jazz. The sound has been emulated endlessly, sparking entire subgenres within the drum & bass continuum.
DJ Persuasion and Dev/Null go in for two hours, playing some of LTJ Bukem's best productions, tracks he signed to his label, and tracks he was famous for playing on this In Focus.

For May 2023 Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @sneakersocialclub, an independent label which began in 2011 and is run by Jamie Russell aka @lowendactivist. In addition to being a producer and DJ, Russell also helms a number of other imprints, including BRUK, Low End Activism, @artefaxrecords, and @hypercolourrecords – which he co-runs with DJ & producer @alexhypercolour.
 
Although Sneaker Social Club’s name comes from Russell’s love of sneakers, its output is much more aligned with the UK hardcore continuum, echoing everything from jungle and breaks, to early 2000s grime and dubstep.
 
For this show, Russell has gone through the label’s back catalogs, putting together a mix with his favorite tracks released on the imprint so far.  As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview, where Russell discusses his many different imprints and aliases, why he relishes the process of production over DJing, and being inspired by the rhythm of a washing machine. I started this mix series a number of years ago, but then moved abroad and was unable to continue. During that time I started the Basic Rhythm project as a means of more explicitly exploring my own musical background in pirate radio and in the process re-contextualizing and updating it. Having since moved back to London I decided to relaunch the series, this time using the Basic Rhythm alias as it felt more apt to tie it to this project. Fact Mag were hosting the series for a brief time, but I decided I would prefer to do it on my own and have total control over the artwork and presentation. Each mix will naturally be entirely subjective, consisting of what I was playing and listening to at the time, as well as the big tunes on radio and in the raves.

The series starts at my early days of buying records at Music Power in Ilford, Total Music in Bethnal Green, Boogie Times in Romford, and even the odd trip to Paul for Music in Whitechapel; listening to Pulse FM, Unity 88.4, Weekend Rush and of course Kool FM; going raving at Telepathy, One Nation, Slammin’ Vinyl, Stratford Rex, Bagley's, The End and so on; playing on my first pirate station, eventually ending up on the infamous Rude FM. It kicks off in 1990, moving through early House and Techno, Hardcore, Jungle and eventually Drum & Bass.

The name is taken from a series of 12″s on 3rd Party Records, and feels suited to the mixes as not only did most of us start mixing in our bedrooms back then, but that is also where a lot of us made the music.
