Formed back in the heady days of 1987 at the start of the ‘acieed’ explosion, Acid Jazz was the first of the groundbreaking new indie labels and paved the way for the likes of Mo Wax, Wall Of Sound and Talkin' Loud…

Initially a simple bedroom operation established by Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson, within three months of the first 45 release (Galliano’s Frederic Lies Still), the label had grown rapidly, acquired premises in London’s east end and laid out a unique manifesto of alternative club sounds – jazz, street-soul, funk, latin, reggae and jazz poetry all put in an early appearance. Galliano, Chris Bangs, The Night Trains, The Last Poets, A Man Called Adam and Snowboy & The Latin Section were amongst the first wave of label signings and they all appeared live at groundbreaking jazz themed nights at London clubs like the WAG in Soho and Camden’s legendary Dingwalls.





By ’89, Peterson had left the label to establish his own Talking Loud imprint and Piller soon moved the operation to Denmark Street, London’s original Tin Pan Alley, into the former EMI music office. The next wave of signings included D Influence, Jamiroquai and The Brand New Heavies. Chart success quickly followed as the label spread its numerous tentacles around the world. The sound of the label became the name of choice for the scene that had established in its wake and by the early ’90s, Acid Jazz was booming out of a succession of speakers from Sweden to Singapore, Hamburg to Hobart, Shibuya to Sheffield and everywhere in between. International tours followed as the label expanded through the 90′s, gradually increasing their musical influences to include daisy-age hip hop, garage psyche and trip hop.





By the mid-90′s Acid Jazz had revived the careers of legends like Terry Callier, Brian Auger and Gregory Isaacs, established three subsidiaries (Focus, All Seeing Eye and Roots to cater for progressive indie, drum and bass and roots and culture respectively) and signed yet another wave of successful independent artists which included the likes of Corduroy, Mother Earth, The Humble Souls, Goldbug and a dozen more.





In 1994, the label took the plunge and opened the first ‘non-house’ based night club in London. Based on the site of the Bass Clef, a down-at-heel and eventually semi-derelict jazz club in Hoxton – perched precariously amidst the second world war bomb sites, derelict buildings and culture-free zone, the club was credited with paving the way for the whole Hoxton/Shoreditch explosion of the late nineties. Indeed, the club was rarely less than full seven nights a week hosting events from the likes of Goldie’s Metalheads, Talvin Singh, Coldcut, Ab-ashanti, Athletico and the label’s own Magic Bus. The Blue Note closed its doors at the end of the decade and Acid Jazz went back to what they do best: releasing records.

Jumping forward to 2014 and we find the label firmly ensconced in their office at the top of Brick Lane and after celebrating their 25th Anniversary the label is as vibrant and vital as ever. The current roster includes the critically acclaimed, prog folk fusions of Matt Berry, new indie hopefuls Dexters, the soul meet the Streets stylings of New Street Adventure and ex Bluetones lead singer Mark Morriss, whilst the highly acclaimed Rare Mod series has discovered and released previously unknown works by everyone from The Riot Squad featuring David Bowie to the Small Faces Steve Marriott.

In short after over a quarter of a century Acid Jazz remains one of the UK’s most important independent labels.


CB is a pianist, singer, composer, songwriter - from Brazil, based in New York. She is a multi-media artist and performer that holds two artistic personalities. One classically trained, Master in Piano Performance, Researcher, Professor, doing a PhD in Composition in the UK; the other one, learned from a very artistic family and community from the northeast of Brazil (Bahia), where singing, playing, writing, performing is part of daily life and sacrality. CB is an artist creating and composing life primarily, looking for new organic human expressions mainly through music, image in video and photography, gestures and movement, communication and social interaction, storytelling and fantasying. Immigration, diaspora, ethnicities, african and indigenous mythology, nature, religions, rituals are her subjects of interest. To give voice to tradition towards the future, to be organic and high tech, to experiment and discover methods to connect music, image, gesture - the space in between arts and time.

CB has been working mainly in electronic music, as a producer and in collaboration with other producers around the world, for films, ballets and artists.

She is currently working on a new album with the american DJ/ Producer Corey Baker (Pattern Drama) for Touch of Class Records, preparing to debut a project in duo with the producer Max Wild (NY/Berlin), and working on the compositions of her PhD Project DNArchive.

If ever a record called be called a lost masterpiece then this record more than deserves that epithet. First released on an obscure French label in the 1970's it might have sunk further into obscurity and left no trace of it's passing but somehow a handful of copies turned up in various Jazz shops in London where it was snapped up by DJ Paul Murphy who was then playing to the embryonic jazz dance scene, based at the very first Jazz Room club: The Horseshoe in London's Tottenham Court Road, a decaying, seedy, sticky carpeted old West End ballroom that had seen better days. This and a select few records in a similar vein were being played to an appreciative audience who demanded tough raw percussive rhythms overlaid with some furious jazzy soloing and whenever this record hit the turntable it left even the most demanding groover sated.

It's a really fantastic collection from this barely known reedman and his excellent band which also features a guest appearance by American Legend Horace Parlan who is best known for his Afro-Cuban session "Headin' South" on Blue Note Records.

Superbly produced by drummer Peter Schmidlin, who has conjured up a spiritual modal mixdown of Afro-Cuban & Jazz extended percussive workouts that are uncompromising in their groove and which manage to sound both timeless and modern. The record is being re-released with the original striking artwork, guaranteed to be a talking point.

The Boogie Brothers’ – Let’s Go feat Sato

When this bomb landed at Paper Towers their only option was to clear the decks and get it out asap. The Boogie Brothers’ ‘Let’s Go’ featuring Sato on vocals is the said track. Cooked up by Japan-based Julian Brennan and Cal Gibson (The Secret Soul Society) as a live disco jam that channels Arthur Russell, FK and Larry Levan. Sato from Japanese cosmic pop duo Viva Sherry was brought on board to provide vocals, and the result is a release that sounds like a modern disco classic. No remixes, no edits, just one stone-cold killer cut and with Danny Krivit already all over it.

The Secret Soul Society are an act who get us very excited here at LV HQ whether it’s for their own classy releases or the label they co-run Scruffy Soul Recordings whose The Kyoto Connection EP we featured a few weeks back HERE. Their latest venture is a 15 song album packed full of outstanding original compositions, sample heavy gems and leftfield groove. 
Landing this coming Friday on Slightly Transformed as a Juno Download exclusive it’s an outstanding way to see out 2020 with the promise of a much better year ahead. 
Songs From The Soul Kitchen is an album that pulls many disparate genres together from Thievery Corporation dubbed out electronica through Jazz edged electronic licks reminiscent of Flying Lotus. It flows through tracks channeling Stevie Wonder and the lighter moments of Screamadelica era Andrew Weatherall straight into deep blues edged Beta Band cool and sample heavy disco moments. 
It full of distinct influences but equally as a whole its combined sound pallet sounds original and exciting. The samples are well chosen and engaging and work together perfectly as an piece, The Secret Soul Society has most definitely found their own vibe here and it’s one which it is easy to become fully involved in. 
Our premier today is Better Get To Know You, which is one of the more disco edged and dancefloor ready tracks on the album, It’s main vocal loop is a delight, easy going, fun and cool. It’s a track in the vein of the Stardust’s and Modjo’s of this world as far as the feelings that it elicits.

Not so much edits, or remixes, as new music inspired by archival sources is Secret Soul Society’s E.P. on Paper Recordings. SSS being an extremely prolific new-ish venture from Neon Heights` Cal Gibson. There`s a quartet of tunes on offer, but I`ll pick just 2. Jeff & David loops reeds and rippling pianos while some sampled wise-head explains the way discotheques should work. The relationship between the DJ and the dancers, where it`s the dancers that define the dance. The more drum-driven Cantoma-esque Sunday Brown is a bongo-bashing heat-haze of keys in gliding glissando and muted vocal harmonies.
