My mix of the Stems provided by Lewitt Microphones for their #MakeYourselfHeard contest.

I came into this not really knowing the band and definitely not the song. I refused to listen to the song or even the band's style overall so that I could see how my take on the material compared to not only the official version but to what others have done.

What I did know was that these were pretty raw studio sessions with an emphasis on live & in the moment. The band's passion was on-tape. Just my thing.

I set out to deliver a mix of '60s Garage - '70s Stadium. A "band in a big hall" sort of vibe as that is what the material said to me. It is that mix of bombastic + grit.

There was a lot of spill on all the tracks. I did the least I felt necessary to tidy that up. No automatic gating. I only roughly chopped out the parts around the vocals and before the Bass first plays, using fairly long fades. If you lean in, you may hear it but this was not uncommon on old records. I only cut when I felt that the spill was "muddying the waters" more than adding vibe. I left the room mics pretty high in the mix.

On the masters, I used gentle stereo widening but also used a process to create a semi-mono mix. This was to bring some of the vinyl feel whilst still allowing for the modern taste of a broad spread.

I have had people say that seeing I mostly mix electronic music, I could never handle something Rock & Raw. I hope this helps them to see that it is all about Story and that genre is for children playing games.

Under our former name "Kahlil's Razor," our album "Parables and Patience" was released July 2020 and the vinyl copies quickly sold out. We'll be making a larger pressing for the new "Radio Moonglow" album, and can't wait to share it.

I am a Mix Engineer. My approach is different from the typical online mixer these days. My approach is to use the mix to help tell the Story of your Song. I am not looking to make the loudest or widest mix, but to make your song very emotionally engaging. If you find yourself tired of all those loud but flat mixes, give me a try.

I write Space Music which I consider a form of Proto-Techno or Techno as it was initially formed by artists like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Tomita etc. A few oddities get put here. Most of my work is on my site and bandcamp.
