"Riding" is a roaring tunnel ride. The dark atmosphere is made danceable and rave-like by the punchy dubstep drums, enhanced by the pounding live acoustic drums played by Simon Fischer.

The numerous layers of synthesizers shimmer like bright light through the fog wall and make the dust in the air sparkle. It's an elegant mix of digital synthesis and raw post-rock.

The raw, sustained vocals sung by Ben himself come across as a mixture of Dave Gahan and Brian Molko. In a consciously melancholic mood, lyrical reckoning is done with our throw-away society. A blue note at the end of every verse.

We are "riding on the overflow" with a surfboard on the garbage mountains. And "flying high on Tylenol," the pains are simply pushed away. All we see is just one click away, "Seen in an ad watching Football." We no longer really think about what we need and what consequences it might have, "what if I'm the murder doll, you just bought on wirecall?"

In the bridge, we are shaken awake by the breakbeat and the vocal chops of singer Nathalie Obrovac, only to sink again in the final chorus, where we are somewhat frightened, "hiding under a Parasol," and yet blissfully allowed to listen to the "chiming sounds reflecting Taj Mahal."

Wenn man den Sound von @el_sandovas und ihn kennt, kann man sich gut vorstellen, wie ein 16-jähriger mexikanischer Junge Progressive House und Trance in Jugendclubs in Mexiko City kennengelernt hat - sein Mix ist ein Beispiel für den proggy Sound, der derzeit die Menschen auf den dancefloor bringt.

This month’s episode welcomes Reykjavik based Australian producer, composer, and sound artist @BenFrost. Early albums like Theory of Machines, By The Throat, and Solaris established Ben Frost as a frontrunner in conceptual, boundary-pushing, and sometimes aggressive electronic music — echoed in his earth shaking live performances, which themselves are celebrations of spine tingling bass frequencies and volume. 

Not for the faint of heart, his music is inspired by punk rock guitar, minimalism, and in the case of his most recent album, heavy metal, often eschewing storytelling altogether in favour of a visceral, physical musical experience. And yet, his work in film and TV scoring, dance, and even opera suggests he’s still interested in narrative artwork. 


In this conversation, Ben and I explore the different facets of storytelling, or lack thereof, as a musician, his new album Scope Neglect, and his approach to composition across these decidedly different fields.
