Following a trip into the heart of Max Santilli’s Sydney studio, Into The Light Records’ ‘international’ series returns to Europe for an audience with former Peur Bleue, Versatile and Wisdom Teeth contribitor Benoit B.

The Berlin-based producer has previously won praise for his atmospheric and evocative approach to electronic music, which priorities melody, texture and vibe over form and function. “Notes of Love”, his first EP for Into The Light, was deliberately designed as a “soft journey for the ears”, with Benoit B opting to layer up only the most essential musical elements in order to guarantee sparkling, crystal clear sound and an overriding clarity of purpose.

Even so, the six tracks are still stylistically eclectic. Compare and contrast the sunrise-ready new age synthesizer melodies, bustling synth-bass, Fairlight style stabs and shuffling breakbeats of “2090”, the Vangelis Katsoulis style bliss of “Polar Nights”, the Art of Noise style ambient collage that is “Czechoslovakia” and the intergalactic, post-electro pulse of “Cowboy Dan”, whose rubbery synthesizer lines and electronic motifs somehow manage to be both funky and foreboding. Yet for all of these stylistic twists, “Notes of Love” is a coherent statement of intent from a producer whose personal musical vision remains as clear as ever.

Brilliant mix here from Paris based artist Elen Huynh, one we absorbed on headphones this past week walking around sunny Melbourne. Elen guides us through a trip of contemporary modern classical and freeform avant-garde compositions with seasoned golden ears for field recording and natural sound elements. Elen hosts a regular show on LYL Radio and has worked with artists such as Cucina Povera, Broshuda, Malvern Brume and Glasgow's own Mark Vernon. Shining crown jewels in Tel Aviv's underground scene, Red Axes' artistic endeavours have slowly but surely been revitalising Israeli music culture. Their output's calibre sets the bar inexorably high — epitomised by the stripped-back disco bomb “Waiting for a Surprise” which stirred up a ruckus this exact time last year. So much so that techno don Audion was compelled to lay his grace on the dub. Spurred on by a bouncy bass line, swirling electronics and agile percussive workouts darting all over the joint, Audion’s production lab mastery is heard crystal clear throughout.

Forthcoming on Waiting For A Remix (which includes reworks by Moscoman, Manfredas and Thomas Von Party) this bag of goodies drops through @multiculti digitally on October 3rd, followed up by wax on October 27th.

Red Axes "Waiting For A Surprise" (Audion's Magic Carpet Remix)

Craig Bratley has been carving out a distinct and somewhat peculiar discography since his debut release ‘Free Music’ landed in 2004. The foundations of his tracks are often weighty and driving, leaving the outer layers to go intricately wild.  

Andrew Weatherall stands tall among British dance music’s most prominent figures. He’s been killing it for decades, and shows no signs of stopping. ‘Play The Game (Andrew Weatheral remix)’ stretches the track out into a mesmerising, 10-minute masterpiece that goes both minimal and maximal as it traverses through spidery percussive lines and crashing guitar chords. Wondem Remixed is a humble compilation of reworkings by some of my colleagues in Los Angeles and the UK. I asked musicians who were already interested or involved in my musical explorations or who lived in a parallel universe. In other words, I didn't force it on a who's who of "remixers" and as a result this body of work has a more organic and personal sense about it. The collection starts with a masterful reimagining by Brainfeeder beat maestro Ras G who has played a couple of shows with us. He took elements from the entire Wondem record and created an Afrikan Space Program classic. Producer and drummer Te'Amir Sweeney plays with the Wondem band and brought his sonic expertise with a crazy ambient remix of Saba. Emerging production collective Stomach Club, whom I met through my good friend and co-producer Carlos Niño one night in Venice, went all-in and vibey on the Somalian-inspired tune Xamar. Carlos himself provided a spirited soundscape featuring tracks from the entire record. International DJ and KCRW.com favorite Jeremy Sole took Lalibela to a new place with his awesome musicality and sensitivity. Prolific trumpeter, Ethio Cali bandleader and arranger Todd Simon did a sublime dub version of one of the more popular tunes on the record Sidet Eskemeche. The compilation is also blessed by an Al Dobson Jr. appearance. He completely flipped Mowa and I am grateful to him. Last but not least are two exceptional perspectives on Merkato Star and Eastern Prayer by our London-based homie Kutmah. 

I am very proud of this Wondem Remixed offering and hope you find some new inspiration for yourself in here.
