During rather dark and isolated times, Yotah and Voichek gathered in a small bassement to consult about their longtime love for downtempo techno. Soon they found themselfs spending countless hours in said place, often losing track of time and space, while taking their own approach on slow but yet energetic dance music, adding some dubby elements aswell. During this time they were able to learn quite a lot about music and how they could produce it, dealing with technical challenges and how they could manage to work in close collaboration while growing and thus changing as individuals aswell. Cut a rug EP presents the beginning of a deep friendship and an ever inspiring journey through sound and time.

Following his collaboration with Nicolas Jaar's Clown & Sunset label, Cruz has self-produced and self-recorded this landmark album. 

‘Prender el Alma’ is a new strain of Latin American music Cruz calls ‘Andes Step’. Influenced by new digital technology, blended with local influence, Cruz builds his tracks layer by layer, instrument by instrument, drum by drum, exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies in a modern setting. 

From atmospheric opener ‘Sanacion’, the 10-track album journeys through short, sharp acoustic guitar riffs on ‘Puente Roto’ and the percussive ‘La Mirada’, to the electronic ‘Prender el Alma’. Down-beat ‘Equinoccio’ gets a vocal kick from Ecuadorian singer Huaira, ending with the blissful, lo-fi ‘Cocha Runa’ featuring Tanya Sanchez. ‘Prender el Alma’ ebbs and flows through a range of production of local sounds, feeling like a digital awakening.

This digital revolution is spreading through Latin America like wildfire, and nowhere is this more exciting than in the heart of the continent's bustling music scene, where Nicola Cruz is leading the way. 

Led by forward-thinking young producers and musicians, Ecuador is beginning to experience its own digital folklore revolution.  A new crop of producers and musicians are using homeland traditions and rhythms to build on a vibrant history of visual and sonic art, catapulting them into the 21st century.

ZZK are at the forefront of this burgeoning music scene. With artists such as Frikstailers, La Yegros, El Remolon and Chancha Via Circuito, they are defining a new and exciting Latin American music culture.

El Remolon reaches deep down into his bag of tricks for a global bass inspired journey through the jungle, calling on a cast of producers from around the world to remix his 5th studio album, Selva. 

On his 2014 album El Remolon took us on a journey through mystic Peruvian jungles and the Buenos Aires rat race, intent on connecting the listener with a cosmic cumbia visceral experience no matter the environment.  On it we heard Rhodes pianos, shamanic ritual chants and a whole lot of bass.  The record, heavy in collaborations, featured Buenos Aires hip hop/dancehall/cumbia starlet Miss Bolivia, Ali Gua Gua from the Kumbia Queers and the masked Dengue Dengue Dengue from Peru, to name a few.  This time around El Remolon calls on producers from all corners of the globe to give their signature touches to Selva.   

  Remixers from Australia, Belgium, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador, Spain and Germany lend their wares for a truly “global bass” affair.  The Ecuadorian Nicola Cruz, ZZK’s newest signee, ever so intricately strips down Lido Pimienta’s Vestido, whereas cumbia meets trap on Flashback from one of the rising producers of the Buenos Aires digital cumbia scene, Esmink.  Chancha Via Circuito lends his signature hypnotic drum patterns on Energia Natural and Barrio Lindo closes out the album with an introspective dream quest with Mariela Gerez’s Quechua lyrics floating in space on Poyeyu.

On the one side there is the Zindagi, a Hindustani word of Persian origin which means ‘life’. For Buddhist people this is the endless cycle of personal reincarnations, each characterised by individual choices resulting in joy and suffering. According to that ancient culture, each choice we make marks the path to the next reincarnation. On the other hand there is the Nirvana, which is the freedom from that endless cycle, the extinction of individual passion, hatred, and delusion: finding the peace of soul and rejecting the concept of self.
The delicate equilibrium between selfness and its rejection was the inspiring force for @katabtu to produce his ethereal EP. This comprises two original tracks titled Nirvana and Zindagi, accompanied
by three powerful remixes by @danbaymusic, @ackssek, and @jati_div.
Katabtu is part of a music collective named ‘@kollektiv-liebe’, whose purpose is raising funds for social projects by means of musical events and releases. Such a valuable and selfless decision taken by the collective resonate with the theme of the Nirvana EP, and to the importance of individual choices. Just like they affect the cycle of reincarnations in the Buddhist culture, daily individual choices affect our immediate future, and the future of our societies. A chain of hardly predictable events is activated every moment. Thus, every moment we live and act altruistically, we have the chance to care about others, about nature, about the world we live in. Mind small choices, tame the
self. Doing so, Zindagi and Nirvana may meet in the quotidianity.
