Lena Ortega (aka Leena Lee) is a sound artist, field recordist, researcher, designer and teacher whose line of research explores the intersections between natures/cultures. Member of the interdisciplinary research group Arte+Ciencia at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has been a visiting artist and researcher in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Finland and has participated in national and international group exhibitions. She has published articles in collective books on design, philosophy and sound art publications. Currently host of the radio program Sin Superficie, la Piel no es el Límite, dedicated to the active practice of listening. She presents works, mostly by women and non-binary artists, in the fields of sound ecology, sound art and experimental music.

Mapping a Space from the Self to the Other

It is an audio map of a journey beginning at the dawn of a small town in central east of Italy, going down to the Capital, and coming back at the dawn of the day after. Narrative is imaginary and not always chronological even though is entirely based on field recordings taken from a specific portion of Italy tied up geographically and historically.

I wake up and I pass through an awakening local market, I have breakfast in a silent café in the town center and a vegetarian lunch in a busy restaurant by the sea. Through walking and listening to the sounds and noises around me I record a conversation in a quiet street, meanwhile a bulding site resonates out of a courtyard. I also pass through a Catholic infant school and then I take a fast train to the city where I spoke with an homeless from the Balkans at the entrance of a central supermarket. Then I walk on the outskirts of the city where a big process of social diversity is on, and I take a sound recording along the footpath I inhabit for a while.

I get back home on a slow and local 'litturina' train in which I share the convoy with a group of migrant workers from Nigeria who speak vividly in their own language. The small but agile train lifts up the mountains and drop down to the hilly countryside where the journey ends, quite and clear.
