INTERVIEW WITH SFDM

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

Hello boys, thanks for having us! Usually when we prepare a regular mix (with no "theme" or such) we try to be as wide as possible in terms of genre. we like our mixes to be something fluid and natural , evolving from track to track into a different mood or kind of sound,  from downtempo to uptempo (and sometimes back)
So our scheme usually is like this: we choose a bunch or records to create the spine of the mix and then adjust by substituting or adding other tracks until we reach the point when we enjoy playing it without having the feel "oh i miss something here". 
We are happy with the final result of this mix , hope listeners will enjoy the ride too!

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

We have a  strong bond with a lot of records we play, some have a story, many others don't. Most of the time is about feelings that records is capable of  giving to us. This mix has the peculiarity of containing few finds from "quarantine online digging" which is something we could never imagine to experience in our like (i mean the quarantine part). One of these special one is Madeleine Uzho - Satisfied. no better medicine to cheer up a day of lockdown that finding a good record like that for cheap.

Q: Do you have a special digging process and/or what kind of things do you look for in a record when you’re out digging?

We have no science behind this, when we go crate digging we try to look for different elements  that catches our attention like label, musicians involved, date, sometimes just artwork or logo. the step after is searching for a reference on YT or SC in case there's no record player at disposal (we do enjoy a lot flea markets so sometimes is just blind buying!). Online things are easier because of search filters : )

Q: Is there a record, that has continued to be in your wantlist over the years?

There are a lot of records always in the wantlist. first one i recall is  Unique - Sankofa

Q: Music bonds people together. Any local heros/parties you would like to shout out? 

We would like to shout out to all the nice guys and crews in Milan we've met along the road, especially Eternal Love, Luca from Rocket Radio and the crew of Polifonic for inviting us to play in their festival, unfortunately postponed to covid. we were so happy to be invited to play there, but who knows, maybe in the future we will! ; )

Phil moved from Munich, via Heidelberg, Mettingen, Osnabrück, and Hannover before settling in the German capital one year ago. ⁣Together with @djrotwein, he founded @balearicbanana, a high-quality mix series and deep-digging Youtube channel representing their music taste. Opening with a laid-back yet political rap track by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, the mix takes you through Reggae, Downtempo, Street Soul, and Cosmic Disco in multiple languages, while always maintaining a sturdy groove with a sprinkle of obscurity in every track.

I guess it should be little surprise considering the thriving scene of musicians in the city but we are lucky enough to have another top class episode coming from the Dutch contingent. This time from Redleg On A Roll.

Bside Incoming: Redleg On A Roll

Grand manitou du boogie de la scène genevoise, Nadim aka Mah'Mood n'a pas d'égal lorsqu'il s'agit de musiques chaleureuses et sensuelles (mais pas que !). Il devait nous rejoindre au Groom en Avril dernier, pour une soirée qui s'annonçait mémorable mais n'a jamais eu lieu.

Loin de se laisser abattre, il nous a concocté un petit mix pour vous faire découvrir son univers. Sa selecta commence en douceur avec une soul élégante, puis te fera taper du pied avec de bons crus boogie, dub et synth, avant de conclure sur du jazz presque métaphysique.

Cela faisait très longtemps que nous voulions, d'une façon ou d'un autre, partager le talent de ce gentleman et une chose est sûre, vous ne serez pas déçus du voyage !
