Book 1 of "Hinter uns das Land (Behind Us The Land)" takes place in East Prussia in the years leading up to World War II.  It tells the story of the Feyerabend family, who live on a large farm called Gallitten. The story is centered on Inge, the youngest daughter, and her experiences growing up in a time of great change and uncertainty.

The book begins in the summer of 1932, when Inge is five years old. Life on the farm is idyllic and peaceful, and Inge enjoys spending her days playing with her siblings and exploring the surrounding countryside. The family is close-knit and hardworking, and they are well-respected in the community.

However, the shadow of the Nazi regime is looming over Germany, and the Feyerabends are not immune to its influence. Inge's father, a respected farmer, is against the Party, and her older brother Bruno becomes increasingly involved as a soldier.

As the political situation in Germany deteriorates, the Feyerabends begin to worry about the future. They know that war is inevitable, and they fear for their safety and their way of life.

In the final chapter of Book 1, the Feyerabends receive news that German troops have occupied Bohemia and Moravia. This event marks a turning point in the story, as it signals the beginning of the war and the end of the Feyerabends' peaceful life in East Prussia.

But what will happen next? Will the Feyerabends be forced to flee their home? Will they be able to stay together as a family? And what will become of Inge and her siblings?
