We are so thrilled to finally share this deeply touching contemplative mix dreamed up by the ambient duo and E.M.C. (Electronic Music Culture) series founders Nicolò Faggiani and Tommaso Gobbo as Synthbiont & Anassimandrus. This collaborative project converges their shared passion for experimental electronica, meditation and field recording and seeks to immerse us in a profoundly emotional sense-of-place aural experience bound to linger and spill over into days and weeks and months to come 🕊

Weaving together field recordings captured during 2021 with their favourite tracks by artists that most inspire them, the pair are hoping to emphasize the significance of this connection. They prompt us to ponder on how we can improve our ability to listen to soundscapes that surround us and encourage us to improve our relationship with nature by doing so. This is something we feel strongly about and we believe this special mix truly does justice to what that it stands for 🍃 

Just a little short of two hours, this powerful journey starts with a blend of cricket field recordings and a snippet of a speech by the American soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. From there, the mix glides through icy drones, gentle melodies and percussive interventions intertwined with field recordings of regional waterfalls, early summer morning bird chants and eerie vibrations of a lightning rod on the peak of a Slovenian mountain. And this is only a little part of the story - one that can be expressed with words. All the rest can only be revealed when you take time to dive in and listen, as deeply as you can  🔮✨

Nico is a sound artist and multi-instrumentalist from Santiago de Chile. Exploring the use of obsolete cassette recorders and modular synthesizers, his hopeful and melancholic textures invite the listener to contemplate the passing of time. Nico became known as a founding member of the band Boraj, and has continued to release a series of ambient albums in different countries.

Samuel van Dijk is fascinated by contrasts. He explores the rough and the smooth, the loud and the quiet, the cerebral and the visceral in aquatic and naturalistic worlds where electro, techno, dub and ambient are blurred into one. This means that as both a producer and comprehensive live act, the Dutchman can take you from the furthest reaches of outer space to the depths of an oceanic abyss via crackling and frozen tundras. He does so under three aliases—VC-118A, Mohlao, Multicast Dynamics, but all are interconnected and related, with a modular approach to making and performing music meaning that a pumping breakbeat live-set can easily be transformed into an abstract sonic landscape by reducing and modifying elements, playing with textures and reworking structures.

Known by electronic music obsessives as one of electro’s shining lights, the last decade has seen van Dijk excel in both EP and LP format. His achingly beautiful melancholic moods and roomy, absorbing grooves are so fully realised that they work well beyond the club context and have come on top labels like Delsin, Frustrated Funk and Silent Season amongst others. They include highlights like the tension between raw machine sounds and ethereal pads that were explored on VC-118A’s underground classic Vaxna; Shift Register, which was made from largely one-take hardware jams with an instinctive and lo-fi finish, and the slow burning techno of Mohlao’s Landforms LP. Of course, his Multicast Dynamics album quadrilogy on Denovali also laid out immersive ambient worlds in truly escapist ways.

His thrilling sets of guttural and gritty techno, futuristic electro or cathartic ambient are hugely immersive and always emotional, and take him pumping out a peak time festival set, to twisting you inside out with an intimate session in a cosy club or playing an experimental soundscape set in more thought provoking settings with his own avant garde visuals. Whatever he does, though, dance floor experiences are rarely as immersive and emotional as those crafted by this multifaceted artist.
