For the 100th entry in the Honcho Podcast series, we welcome @wonj!  Wonja is an Oakland, CA-based DJ, digger, and long-time music collector, originally from New England. Occasionally producing music as half of Motoko & Myers. This mix is about embracing the warm tingly feeling that only a blissed-out house jam can give you, and it’s dedicated to the idea of playing records for my friends in a small dark crowded bar.

We want to thank you all for supporting the podcast over the years, hitting 100 is an amazing milestone! We've worked with dozens of incredible artists from all around the globe, shining a light and boosting our community has truly been a pleasure. Here's to 100 more!

I'm constantly impressed by the wide-spanning range of genres, styles and moods that make up Wonja's mix catalogue - always new and always fresh.  For this mix, she's put together a playful and eclectic mix of glitch, groove and interesting soundscapes.

A Month of Sundays w/ Wonja 260524

Admittedly, the extract from the still belies the line in this week's @naviar-records haiku poem challenge. The actual line is "half-asleep eyes", but we'll go with what's in the image. This week I've been collaging splice sounds and playing them live in Ableton, then drastically re-editing. I wanted to mix up how I'm making music. Break habits and form new.

Natsume Seibi (1749-1816) was the son of a wealthy Edo rice broker and was acquainted with a number of other famous poets, including Oshima Ryota and Kobayashi Issa. In addition to his poetry, Seibi left behind a number of fine examples of haikai prose.

Ukiyo, the floating world of pleasure, specifically referred to the pleasure quarters with its various beautiful women (hana, literally ‘blossoms’) as well as to popular theatre and street spectacles.

This mix is built around the time-dilating quality of loops, inspired by the kind of “holding pattern” we’re all in. Full tracks, isolated phrases, processed recordings, and original sonic material. The initial inspiration for the mix came from Wonja’s re-discovery of a PC game from her childhood, and its unique sound design. Loops of in-game ambience, engineered by Bay Area composer Brenda Hutchinson, appear throughout the mix. 
 
The mix itself is a loop, beginning and ending in the same setting. Play it on repeat or for any amount of time.

32. Motoko & Myers

To finish up with May at Fake Rolex, we host a sometimes liquid, sometimes deep drumming selection from Elise (@el-se), a DJ that oscillates with prolific talent through genres as UK techno, electro, ghetto house, jungle and between. 

‘I did this podcast a month ago from now when we were still deep into the lockdown here in Paris. Like a lot of people, this period went with a lot of mixed feelings about the future, ups & downs. It was in a bit of a lull moment that I tried to share some kind of “floating acceptance” that I was into on that quarantine day 49’

After 5 years in the Shanghai local scene where she was involved as a DJ, live performer, and occasional promoter, Elise moved to Berlin to focus on her music production, releasing an EP at Man Band Records (2018)(@man-band). 

Now based in Paris, Elise continues to push her sound forward and signed an opening reshape on François X's new imprint Dement3d XXX (@dement3d), with some promising releases in the works as well as a monthly show on Rinse France (@rinse_france).
